Interview with the 2022 Artist of the Year - GMLAB

Feb 15, 2023 at 12:00 pm by gToon

GMLAB (born in 1970) is a DJ, VJ, Producer, Art Director, and Music Junkie. He’s also the 2022 Renderosity Artist of the Year.  Truly, a renaissance man, GM composed the music for the video gallery (see above) which features 15 works from GM’s outstanding gallery. His PC specs are listed below for those of you who are PC enthusiasts.

This interview is a little different. We spoke with gmlab when he won the Artist of the Month back in March of 2022. We covered his background, working methods and advice to beginning artists. You can read the interview here.

For this Artist of the Year interview, we thought it would be interesting for gmlab to conduct his own interview (with our guidance). It's a creative interview that fits with his highly sensitive personal declaration. We hope you enjoy it.

GMLABS: I want to thank everyone who voted for me. First, artist of the month and now an artist of the year! It came as a surprise since many other artists are also good I was chosen as artist of the year. I'm super happy with it and this only motivates me more to keep going.

As you can see in the pictures of my living room I love colored ambient lights. It gives me visual peace and a nice home feeling. With a good sound installation, I usually play lounge music at a soft volume, which inspires me and gives me a good workflow. I like to work with two screens, which offer a solution for multitasking, watching TV while working or watching video tutorials. Making graphic illustrations at this table is wonderful to work on with a piece of music and a nice cup of coffee. I feel completely at home in this room and hope to be able to enjoy it for many years to come and to make many more creations. That's also because I'm a purebred HSP (Highly Sensitive Person). I don't see this as a burden, but as a gift, although it can sometimes be difficult if I get too many external stimuli.
WHAT MAKES A PERSON HSP?
A highly sensitive person (HSP) is a neurodivergent individual who is thought to have an increased or deeper central nervous system sensitivity to physical, emotional, or social stimuli. HSPs are typically highly intelligent and seek out opportunities to do deep work. Many HSPs are academics, artists, researchers, scientists, and technicians with high-level proficiency. HSPs are deep learners, and so enjoy going deep into their chosen subjects, and often gain proficiency early in life. Usually, when I'm in such a mood I get creative in my head. This way I can focus more on the thing I'm doing, but I can also lose my entire expression, which gives me a very relaxing effect.
MY MUSIC
I'm not only interested in graphic art, but also in producing music, which I have been doing for 30 years. I started as a DJ and made mixtapes and later I started expanding my studio into a big music factory. So I did my own productions and made success in the electronic music world and published many vinyl/cd/online tracks to record labels all over the world. Also together with a large group of DJ/Producer friends, we organized House parties on a small and large scale where I could show my VJ skills on large beamer-projection screens.

Those were really cool times! Every now and then I sometimes try to make a track again but the graphic is currently in the first place because my neighbors are less bothered by me lol! If you want to discover more about my music, I refer you to my website www.gmartworks.nl. You can listen to my official works and recent years, but also new creations online.
MY MESSAGE TO THE WORLD
Some might disagree with what I'm about to say, but I want to give everyone a message about AI-generated images.  As it has now become known, AI uses existing images over the internet where it is combined by just entering text and AI will search for an image. The question is about AI where is the line in Digital Art if it is made by a robot or by yourself, despite the fact that you use parts of the content creators who offer their stuff for us to play with it it is still not created by a robot. I'm getting sick and tired of seeing AI-generated 'art'. It's nothing but an algorithm used to create 'imagery' based on copying aspects of millions upon millions of actual artwork online.

I can only get sad about this when people offer this as "homemade art" without your own input from creation and the time you spend on it until the end result. On various art websites, I won't mention names, there has already been a big protest, with many users quitting their accounts. I'm concerned about this development where real graphic artists are being buried away with AI junk. This is my message for everyone and seriously consider whether or not you are going to use AI tools. Keep it Real!
"Before a child speaks, it sings.
Before they write, they paint.
As soon as they stand, they dance.
Art is the basis of human expression"

Awesome!! I want to thank everyone who voted for me and of course a big thank you to Renderosity! 😎👍
Hello dear Jan, wouw my friend, I'm so happy for you, love your artworks so keep them coming, I dont like AL images as well, for me too it's not Art! 😊
CONGRATS! And, nice remarks about AI generated imagery :)
I am dismayed that this site would allow you to use your interview to attack your fellow artists and call our work "junk"! You are entitled to your opinion, but trolling and insulting your fellow artists is a violation of TOS. I am deeply offended and not happy being treated this way by you or this site!
Just got back to Renderosity and haven't even re-substantiated my Poser setup yet but I am very glad you won the vote, That was an awesome rendering. As for ai I think this is a little worse than all the personal computer enhancement from Paint through DTP into Music software. The same argument applies to Poser as well, I get proper perspective, multiple focal lengths and an ability to snapshot from many angle. I decided before I first bought Poser that I wasn't about to relearn to draw and then spend all my days trying to get better. Seems the author had much the same motivation for writing it. Put your © on and steady as she goes.
