Renderosity Updated Policy for AI Images in Galleries

Comments

A touchy subject in today's world for sure, .AI can be useful, But I fully understand Renderosity's concern. Aside from Renderosity losing money by rewarding perks to members posting AI image after AI image to their Gallery , Renderosity and it's vendor Artist make no sales from AI generated Images Which I could foresee that making a Huge negative impact on the future of this wonderful community of artist. But boy oh boy is it getting hard to compete with AI artistic programs. They do produce some EYE catching Images ! Peace !
I love playing with Wombo (which seems the easiest and least expensive) prompt-to-picture generator, and some of the output is uncannily interesting visually. I also have a desire to share some of those pictures with others. However, I agree that one can generate many, many pictures with very little effort. I can generate 12 pictures in a few minutes, whereas it might take two days to produce a good picture in Poser or Vue.
AI art is here to stay trying to ignore it or completely disassociate from those using it ,is a fools gambit
I feel Ai art has it’s place, just not here or anywhere else where 3D art is the main subject. I’m sure there are plenty of other places to show off Ai art. It’s very tough competitor indeed, Ai that is, not the prompter obviously, they are just the client, Ai is the artist. I’m also using Ai btw but not to create my art. We all know it’s already far too late, Ai art is here to stay and will wipe out 3D in the near future. It doesn’t matter that artists are warning people about the negative impact it has on the industry. Creating Art with Ai is as easy as heating your microwave dinner and people were craving for something like this.
May I suggest 2 things: 1) Set a limit on the rate of posting so that Renderosity galleries are not flooded with AI generated images and Renderosity is not hemorrhaging perks. 2) Have separate galleries for each program used to create images (Poser Animals, DAZ Animals, Vue Animals, AI Animals, etc...) This would allow viewers to compare images created by different programs to help them decide which program would best fit their own talents and artistic goals and to find images created by some specific program of interest.
I have mixed feelings about AI and I can see there are reasons behind those who use and some who might abuse it. I think jackwryan made some suggestions in his comment. Hopefully everything works out in the end, and I know there are other websites with loser restrictions on AI for those who still wish to post and share their work.

Maybe I misunderstood or misread something in the article or just plain didn't see it but... why not just have a completely separate section for AI imagery under the Galleries tab? I see sections for every type of 3D and photo editing program known to man but no AI section. Wouldn't that be a fairly simple fix for those who'd like to show off their AI works and keep the 3D and photo sections clear of it? As for the question of Rewards points, you could either offer zero points for AI stuff or maybe offer them at a reduced rate - say, one or two points per image. As for AI companies pirating copywritten works, I have no clue there. That sounds like a question for a team of very smart lawyers. lol
Some ideas are interesting. I think that different sections would be difficult to create because the too great modification of the website. But it could be interesting to have different galleries as soon as the main page appears. Something like 3D, 2D Painting and Drawings, Photography, Fractals, Mixed mediums, AI... But about AI, the copyright of the images found in the web by the software used is a real problem.
I must say I am disappointed with this decision and find it sad that Renderosity caved in and let them upload AI. One was so happy to hear that AI is banned from Renderosity just to find now that they are still allowed to post it. I am sure the others Galleries will get their AI flooding. I am rarely looking at the Daz Gallery as it is because it is dominated by one Artist * I do not name names * is bad enough, but now having AI still allowed to post here... Not sure what to make of it.
Renderosity would do better to limit all gallery posts. I see people crank out a number of software generated images (not just AI) that IMHO barely qualify as art. If you are part of Prime then you can upload 6 images/day everyone else 2 images/day. Do we need to see 10 variations on a theme from one person every day? Minimize rewards for uploaded images so people are not trying to get points by adding crap to the galleries. Maybe 1/image for regular members and 2/image for prime or 1/image for everyone. I don't need to see one person's 10 A.I. variations either. But A.I. is not the problem, it is all in the creativity of the user. These half measures are a start, but it seems Rendo is catering to whiners more than anything.
"one part of the artist’s creative process" is the key thought here. The only AI I'm likely to use at all is in the newest version of Photoshop. And yes, it's PART of the creative toolkit. And I heartily agree with Art's (adorety) post above.
i don't understand what this means now. i interprete it as follows but i'm not sure at all... - so "pure AI" that has only been generated on an AI site (or with a self-taught model) and only with a text prompt is STILL forbidden? - but images where AI was only a part of the process is ALLOWED now/again? so if someone has integrated AI in their photo camera, or integrated AI in gimp/photoshop etc it would be admissible, or if someone generated an AI image on a site, but would postwork it in gimp/PS it would be ok, if someone uses an AI background in a 3d render it would be ok, and if someone made a 3d render and enhanced it with AI it would also be ok? please provide concrete examples and a more detailed explanation!
Searching for a creative interesting peace of art in the rendo gallery is like searching for an intelligent inspiring text on Twitter. You will spent a lot of your precious lifetime to deal with crap and nonsense. I'm absolutly not interested in creating AI pictures by writing promps. As an artist I would feel like a stupid little child, but the results I've seen in the net are very often much more interesting than 90% of the "real 3d Renders". The creative process while doing a 3d scene has for me the same importance like the result. I find it important, having controle over every little detail. Funny and also a little bit absurd is the fact, that many people here on Rendo who are frequently whining about the AI pictures and their not existing aspect of art creating by them self just pictures which are not even in the near distance of being art. Banning AI pictures from a 3d based web side has a certain logic and is explained quiet well by Rendo. On the other hand I whish that many "3d artists" here at Rendo would look and analyze more often good pictures to learn and understand why they are looking so different from their own work. And it doesn't matter if they are created digital, analog or by an AI. Learning you can from everything. Theoretical a forum could help becoming a better artist. The reality is unfortunately the opposite. Why should someone try to increase his artistic awareness, when he recieves permanently positive comments after posting another female portrait which is equal looking to all the other pictures he has posted. All these pubertal oversexualized teen pictures, all the renders without any thought about light, perspective, compositing and framing are full with positive comments. AI ban at Rendo was the right decision for me, but my reason not to visit the gallery anymore were not the AI pictures.
AI is a disaster already happening -- British actor Stephen Fry is pursuing action regarding his discovery of a documentary narrated by him -- except he didn't do it -- not one word. Artist Michael Whelan is pursuing action against a site using AI and "educated" on all his work that is producing "Whelan-esque" art and even promoting it as such. To paraphrase Albert Einstein, mankind's technological growth far outstrips his/her moral ethical growth. Or -- to put it simply, just because you can do a thing doesn't mean you should do a thing.
I think it is just a matter of time before Ai becomes part of programs like DAZ Studio, Poser, Maya, etc. I see Ai art as a tool, not the end-all that some doom-and-gloomers make it out to be. When I first started doing digital artwork, people would ask, "Oh, did you do that in Photoshop?" My answer was always, "No, I use a variety of tools to achieve my end goal." I've been known to use DAZ, GIMP, Ai elements, clip art, and more just to achieve a SINGLE image. From an Ai art standpoint - MOST Ai art draws upon this huge database we call the Internet. Because of that, the US Copyright courts have ruled that Ai generated art does not qualify for copyrights because it is derivative work from many sources - copyrighted and non-copyrighted. Thus, one cannot copyright an Ai piece that is not used in a downstream creation. e.g. If I create an Ai image, then use it to kick-start a painting, and that painting is unique enough to be considered my own creation, then yes, I can copyright it. I see Ai works with prompt words like "Artgerm", "Greg Rutkowski", and other artist that have zero resemblance wo those artists works. Mr. Rutkowski's big gripe isn't with the fact that his name is used to produce works that look nothing like his, but with the fact that it screws with his website S.E.O. (Which is a valid concern - not with the Ai art, but the Ai websites that use his name in their metadata.) But, I digress... I think this is a poor decision on Renderosity's behalf. There is room for both genres. Now, if Renderosity wants to be completely 3D based renders, they should so so. But, banning one genre while allowing other 2D genres is a mistake. And, as with all mistakes, we can make them, but we can't choose the consequences for having made them. I would much rather see Renderosity embrace the new genre and create Ai features in Poser, as well as Ai products. (Yes, there's some money to be made. I don't know enough about the back-end of Ai, but I see other companies embracing it. Topaz Labs, ACDSee, and others are offering Ai enhanced products. Now, I'm going back to my cave and chiseling some more drawings on the wall.
After banning the AI Gallery, which I thought was great, now those Images banned at Renderosity are now shown for * Featured News * and Marketplace News *. So, why getting rid of the AI Gallery and then allowing this * Art * in other Galleries and using it in features yourself? Saying I am disappointed with Renderosity would be an understatement. What happened in that Week when you were all against AI Images on Renderosity with GOOD Reasons, to cave in?
My personal opinion is, that Renderosity stands for artworks which made by hand (paintings, photography, modeling, sketching, render) Doing paintings by just putting words into a generator is NOT art. Which means that it doesn´t belong here. It is kind of funny to do things with AI, I did it myself few times. But again, it doesn´t belong here.
Thank you Renderosity!! AI images are often beautiful and/or interestingly odd, but I long ago got sick of seeing them in areas where artists' talents should be displayed (and learned from). AI may be "here to stay," but in the interest of honoring true artists (which I am not yet anywhere close to being), I totally appreciate Renderosity's decision here. It's going to be a joy, and an education, to roam through the galleries again!!
First of all I started to create AI's because of my eyes! 1 AI upload with 4 or more different images (+ the seed one) is counted in the rewards as 1 = 10 points, the same amount of 4 or more 3d images are counted in the rewards as 4x or more 10 points (=40 and more). Reading all the other comments, I only can agree at 100% with dbwalton and Snow3D!
