Now just accept that we're thick when answering this question: We've started to create historically accurate models for research and to sell to as many formats as possible at the Marketplace including Poser. The model in the picture - an Italian 'Cassone' wedding box of the 14th. century- was created in Cinema 4D (Mac), but on trying to imported any of the file formats it has been saved in - .obj, .3DS, .dxf - to Poser Pro Pack (Mac) it doesn't see them as exsisiting. Nothing! We've tried both R7 and R8 versions of Cinema 4D, but with no luck. Anyone know what we're doing wrong? Thanks to all, VH

Check the scale (Poser files are incresdibl;y tiny scale-wise - if you import something modelled in Cinema4D without scaling it down then the camera is likely inside the object) Otherwise the "Winding" of an object can hide it if incorrect (a common problem). try rendering it in Poser4 and it might "appear". Etc. Etc. IM me if you're quick and I'll help if I can.

Thanks for that 'who3d', but I mustn't have made my problem clear. What's happening is that when clicking on import, none of the files are showing up in the folder which they reside! It's just... empty! Now I know they're there, and if I try and do the same thing in Bryce, they show up! Mm... strange, eh? VH

I don't know if this is the problem, but maybe the import screen isn't looking for the right file types. Try this: go to the import screen, and once you've navigated to the right directory, type '*' (asterisk), then enter. That'll show ALL files in that directory, regardless of extension. Maybe that'll make your files show up :-)

I can beta-test one of the obj files in Mac OS 9. This may be some kind of creator-type problem that we've seen before.

Luthoricas ( ) posted Mon, 16 December 2002 at 1:39 PM

I'd check the files' properties and make sure they're not set to 'hidden' and/or 'archive'. Also, if you're using windows, you might check and see if under 'My Computer' any of the file View types are checked (i.e.- "on"). These will cause windows to 'hide' certain file types from you and (depending on a bunch of things I'll skip listing) from certain programs. Look for -- 'Do not show hidden files and folders' -- 'Hide file extensions for known file types' -- 'Hide protected operating system files' The .obj extension is used by certain programming languages, for example. It used to really annoy me that I'd compile my source code (which generated an .obj) and then go to link it and not be able to find it! My .02 idea...

Thanks for all that and the offer of testing, mateo. I'm going to see if this is because they were created in OS X first by importing the 3DS file to c4d in OS 9. (sounds like some kind of code)! I'll get back to after that. VH

Just something else. Now I've not tried it, but I've heard it mentioned. If you can import it into Bryce, you can also export it out from Bryce. Maybe if it comes out as a Bryce 3ds file or obj file, it'll read in Poser?

ITS A MIRICALE! Firts it got even stranger, when going back to Poser it could see the files, but would freeze when trying to open them. That got me to thinking there might be a system problem. I ran Norton, and low and behold... there was. So all is now peachy! Thank you all for your time and trouble and I hope soon you might be enjoying some of our models. Best wishes and a Merry Christmas, VH

I take it the resultant exported files DO actually have a useful extension (e.g. .OBJ)? If they don't have an extension, or the right extension, then they won't show up in the file dialog box by default... (entering . in filename and pressing enter might make them show up)

That's a beautiful model! Have you tried Maconverter? Mac Poser won't "see" the file if it is the wrong creator/file type and Maconverter fixes it. I've had the same problem, though I'm just beginning with Cinema and my models are more like simple boxes ...

bknoh ( ) posted Mon, 16 December 2002 at 6:34 PM

This is too late to help you but, I have used a program called "3D Magic" which generates .obj's......unfortunetely, none of the ones I save show up when I try to import them into Poser.(haven't tried it in Bryce yet) Yet if I type in the name of the object , it imports fine even though it doesn't appear in the folder. Until you use Maconverter, just about all files will be invisible. I know it was mentioned above, but here's the URL. And get Macinstaller, too---together they make life so easy :)

But I don't have a Mac. Diane

That chest is gorgeous! If the rest of your models are anything like this in quality and authenticity, you'll have customers. BTW, I hope you accept PayPal! Carolly

This may be dumb..but you used the term "Import"(to receive)...."Export" is (to send out)..If you are creating these files in all these different softwares..and "Importing" them then nothing has been "sent out for Poser to recognize..try "Exporting" these files from their original sources..into a common file..and then "Import" them into Poser and see if they show up.

virtuallyhistorical ( ) posted Wed, 18 December 2002 at 8:41 AM

Thanks w-cloer, but that's exactly what I am doing. VH
