Subject: To Vicki3 or not to Vicki3?

Finister ( ) posted Mon, 23 December 2002 at 6:45 PM · edited Wed, 18 December 2024 at 9:08 PM

I still don't get it. But I'm on the bottom of the bell curve around here so hopefully you brainiacs can use small words to explain it to me. I'm staring at about $2000 worth of Vicki clothes and textures and pose files I've got on about ten CD's which came from either DAZ or Renderosity. What I'm hearing is that most of those clothes won't work without major tweaking and that I have to manually UV map all my textures. What about the pose files? Now I can hear some grumbling already: "well it's just a bit of tweaking Fin, quit yer moaning and sacrifice a little time." Sure, when I was making gallery pics one at a time it was kinda fun to spend a couple days on one specific pic, tweaking this, trying out new ideas. But now I'm starting to do comix and having to fly through multiple renders in a short time. I don't want to screw around refitting all the clothes and remapping every texture. V3 cr2 to V2 cr2 - what's the point if it's just head morph transfering? And if I dump another butt load of money into Vicki3 items in 2003 will I then have to do the same in 2004 when Vicki4 comes out with similar issues? Vicki3 is fantastic! DAZ has created another great model! But do I need the new Cadillac when my '67 Shelby Mustang's running fine? What am I missing folks? Sell me, because so far I'm not convinced. Why should I make the investment when I already have a closet full of toys?

Well, sounds to me like you have invested a lot and don't "need" Vicki3 yet. I just bought Vicki2 a while ago, so I didn't have a lot invested and got Vicki3 at Platninum Club price + Upgrade. So for me doing still high fine art (whatever that is) Vicki3 really fit the bill. The new morphs are fantastic, and the higher quality joint fixed mesh of Vicki3 really sold me. One thing to consider. Daz as a lot of other mechants are now going to be coming out with Vicki3 things. You might want to grab the discounted Vicki3 now at the cheap price and save yourself some money, even if she sits on the shelf for a few months, down the road you will be saving yourself some cash when/IF you do need to use her. you said your doing comix, well Vicki3 sure has a lot of Characters with all the morphs, and you get a LOT of milage out of her this alown might be enough for the jump, just think of all the different people that will start showing up in your comix. I dunno, for me it was a no brainer, the discounts, cheap price, and not a lot invested. For you, little investment now, save a bit, tweak some if ya have some time, you could see a BIG pay off in the next few months. Hard call. Money only growes on trees in my renders, I have to weigh each purchase for my Poser collection. Good luck.

Thanks MachineClaw. I'm certain that the new clothes that start coming out for Vicki3 will be tantalising and many great artists will be making textures galore. I wish I could afford to get in on the sales, but Santa's sleigh cost a lotta dough this year. Maybe it's just the timing that has me frustrated. I'll probably join the bandwagon once my tax returns come in. Thanks for your honesty. BTW, does Vicki2 glare at you now?

If you're doing comics, you may not need to extra "fidelity" V3 offers. I'm guessing that for comics the biggest issue would be if you want to solve those lousy V2 joints at the expense of gaining the clothing headache. On the other hand, it seems that there are some brainiacs that have been working the V2 clothing to V3 issue and may come up with a solution.

Finister, Yeah Vicki2 isn't getting much use, well, not as much as Vicki 3 this week anyway. Fat Asian Vicki3, Fat Asian male Vicki3....wait, more morphs please...haha! I think the thing I'm most amazed at with Vicki3 is when ya play with the morphs (I got facial and body extra purchases), they just don't look like Vicki anymore, and they look like another model that I purchased. Been like 10 models for the price of one. The mesh holds up pretty well too, so when I'm playing with extreme morphs, sometimes I'm stunned and have a new character I have to save, woo free character #23. It really is quite remarkable. I understand the money thing, i just spent a TON at Daz3d only cause I had overtime money and Xmas money.

What I'm hearing is that ... I have to manually UV map all my textures.

No, only the Vicky 3 figure. Remap the figure so that it has the same UV mapping as the original Victoria 1 mesh, and then all your old textures will work fine without further work. DAZ even provides the .uvs files, so it only takes a couple of minutes in UVMapper.

V3 cr2 to V2 cr2 - what's the point if it's just head morph transfering?

It allows you to use your existing Victoria 1 and 2 clothing with Vicky 3, just as the Victoria 2 P4 figure can wear Posette's clothes.

I must admit that Vicky 3 is really the biz. She just looks SO much better than previous anything before. The sheer variety of characters possible is amazing. Any thank you Daz, according to Victoria 3's morphs I am officially 'Rubanesque' not fat! What a Christmas present! Seriously, if you are in the Plat Club and don't get this you will by kicking yourself in a few months time, or so I predict!

I agree, V3 is simply a beautiful character, and I'm very happy I got her. Her joints are fixed, and that means a whole lot to me, at least. on morphworld30 there's a tut for adapting P4 clothing to Eve, and similar work with the addition of some magnets would get your V2 clothing to fit your V3 character without much trouble. I really have to set up a mag set so I can start refitting clothing - I prefer V3 over V2, and I'd prefer to use her very improved Cr2 with that amazing posability. The good thing about a mag set is we could distribute that without violating any copyrights.

Moonbiter ( ) posted Tue, 24 December 2002 at 2:12 AM

Little Dragon (or anyone else), just to get this straight, the V3 to V2 cr2s means I can use Vicky 1+2 clothing with V3 faces? I'm in the platinum club, so cost isn't a problem I just saw no need for V3 if I need to by new clothes. If I can use the face morphs with normal vicky clothing I'd be happy.

MachineClaw ( ) posted Tue, 24 December 2002 at 2:22 AM

Moonbiter, Stright from Daz3d Vicki3 features list: Vicki3 comes with V3 to V2 Cr2 and OBJ Backwards Compatibility for use with V1/V2: -Poses -Clothing and Accessories -Maps -Compatible with V3 Head Morphs The Vicki3 to Vicki2 Cr2 and Obj are included in the BASE Vicki3 package. You can use Vicki3 Head Morphs (face) with the V3 to V2 and use ALL your V2 clothes. ONLY thing you can not do is use Body morphs with the V3 to V2. Daz3d I don't think wanted to alienate anybody, so they included this FREE, PLUS, u can get UVMapper files for applying V2 textures to Vicki3 just have to follow directions on thier site. It's Daz3d, more will be revealed later I'm sure, they have already stated that tutorials will be on Arcana later.

bijouchat ( ) posted Tue, 24 December 2002 at 2:24 AM

yes, V3 to V2 lets you use her face morphs with a standard V2 compatible body (but its actually the V3 mesh reshaped to V2 proportions). Not many morphs on that figure, but you can use the clothing without a hitch.

AlleyKatArt ( ) posted Tue, 24 December 2002 at 6:46 AM

Well, an idea from this humble artist, someone get to work on a conformable v3 head that can conform to v2's body. All the perks and /none/ of the downside. At all. But make it free, please. I'm poor.

Just curious, but if Vicky 3 to Vicky 2 is Victoria 3 mesh grouped and shaped as Victoria 2, couldnt we transfer V2 morphs to V3toV2 with Tailor. If I remember well the debate over the tailorized Michael Catsuit originated from the fact that Tailor can approximate the morphs from character to character, not only from character to clothing items. Still we would need to postwork the joints I think

bijouchat ( ) posted Tue, 24 December 2002 at 3:34 PM

yeah you can. I haven't gone to try it yet, but I don't see why its not possible. It might not work on all morphs though. But if you can get a lot of them, you're well on your way.

AlleyKatArt ( ) posted Tue, 24 December 2002 at 8:45 PM

Yes, except v3 will NOT load into Tailor...
