Dr. Geep I haven't had time to "speak up" in class lately, but I've been foolowing all of your great classes carefully. May I say that this is the BEST way to give away freebies yet?! Not only do you wind up with a great Poser prop, but you learn something to boot! A fantastic bargain in my book! Thanks you so much for all of your efforts! mike

I gotta echo Trav's sentiments. Kinda like teaching us to fish rather than just posting it for us to download somewhere. Do you have any plans for a temple and a sword? :-)

hauksdottir ( ) posted Wed, 25 December 2002 at 11:11 AM

Merry Christmas! Are you putting the star on the tree? :) Someone already hung the lights!

geep ( ) posted Wed, 25 December 2002 at 11:26 AM

It has been said ...

"Give someone a fish and they will eat for a day; teach them how to fish, and they will eat for a lifetime,"

Dr Geep is just tryin' ta teach y'all "how-to-fish" 'cuz he enjoys it alot! ;=]

Temple and a sword? .......... A little more complex, to say the least, but Dr Geep thinks it is do-able.
(He doesn't know any better! ;=] )

Maybe a sword .... remind me again in the future. ;=]

Happy Holidays!

These are classes I enjoy attending over the holidays! I've heard that the actual saying is: "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you'll never see him again!"

Re: "... the actual saying ..."

(I didn't want to "say" "man" in defference to the ladies that might be present. ;=] )

Having said that ...

Re " ... you'll never see him again!"

Perhaps one should "teach" their enemies how to fish, no?

Happy Holidays! ........ Hope you enjoy them.

OK Classmates, let's pay attention! Do you think geep is doing all this work putting together these lessons just for the Halibut? And he's doing it over the hoidays.. I know this takes a whale lot of his precious time. Salmon should give him a "Teacher Of The Year" Award. Cod forbid we should be so disruptive! Mutton is quite as annoying as putting a lot of work into something and then not being able to share it because of the chatter. I guess I'd better get off my soapbox, I'm starting to Perch. I came with a Porpoise - I want to learn. [I know that was awful. I'm gonna go have my wife spank me and then I'll be back.]

Iron Bear, OT: Where can I find an eagle feather? - TJ

Ironbear ( ) posted Thu, 26 December 2002 at 10:50 PM

Hrmmm.... not sure about an eagle feather per se, BM. RenaPD's "Indian maiden" has an eagle feather prop for her hair that's basically a flat prop transmapped. And there used to be a couple of feathers in obj format at 3D-Cafe that could be maped, textured and transmapped to good effect. There's also a feather pp2 prop in freebies either here or at 3DCommune, someplace. By... ummm.... cooler, maybe?

Oh! Ok... sorry. Poser forum, "where can I find an eagle feather?", I figured "Ok... prop". ;] Nebber mind. ;] Best bet is to go through the registry of lisenced falconers looking for ones that have eagle permits. And then write to them and ask how the best way to go about getting a feather would be - mayhaps one can send you a shed primary. If your frinds on the tribal rolls [and if they're a blood who's earned the right to wear an eagle feather, they should be], they can write to or contact the Sioux tribal council and ask for reccomendations on where to get an actual feather. Anothe roption - send Sam Silverhawk an email, and ask him if he or Rain can point you to someone who might be able to help. www.samsilverhawk.com There's a mailto on his site. Earned the right? They killed someone in battle and took a scalp? In this day and age? Kewl! ;]

saving the life of another at personal risk as well ... but rather than misinform you, many Native American sites are
opening up on the net. You might find out more

Q and Iron Bear, Sam Silverhawk replied to my email. he says "So you want an Eagle Feather,Huh?". He was then very helpful and refered me to the site below: Once you are recognised as an enrolled tribal member, you can obtain one here. eagle repository. So I'll follow up with it. I'm not enrolled as a tribal member, so I will have to get either his son or daughter to get the feather to give it to him. Thanks again Iron Bear, - TJ

hauksdottir ( ) posted Fri, 27 December 2002 at 7:56 AM

TJ, AFAIK, eagles and the other raptors are all "protected species"... which means that it is illegal for us to have in our possession even so much as a feather of an eagle, hawk, falcon, condor, etc.. There are exceptions. Native Americans can still catch eagles using the traditional means (it is part of some ceremonies, and must be unharmed during capture). They are also allowed to keep and display and wear feathers and such. Licensed falconers can raise raptors (which is how we get a lot of the eggs for replacement and reoccupation of territories). Certain trained people can get licenses to heal and care for injured birds. One of my neighbors many, many years ago had a red-tailed hawk with a broken wing which he was caring for during its recovery. He was one of the people on-call to take them in. You not only need training and a license... but the personality, too: nurturing enough to calm a bird in pain but distant enough to let it remain wild and releasable once healed. He let me photograph it... from a distance. I am glad for the limitations. Seeing a golden eagle floating through the canyon is far more exciting than seeing them in a zoo cage. Without protection, there be would be little left of the wild. Carolly

bikermouse ( ) posted Fri, 27 December 2002 at 12:01 PM

hauksdottir, No, They can't catch them either anymore. There is a Eagle repository to allow for the use of feathers - they are doled out by the Department of Fish and Game. Buffalo's Son, Who is Lakota and Navajo and on the rolls of the Lakota, could apply for and recieve the feather for his father - I would not have to have possession of it. All I would do is insure that the application is delivered to the proper party and sort out the details. The feather itself would be obtained as detailed in the link above and sent to the son. And then there is a ceremony for him to recieve the feather. Sam Silverhawk was very helpful and very explicit as to what I could and could not do. Although it is permissable for tribal members to possess eagle feathers they can not give them to non-members even as a gift. Thanks for the concern, - TJ
