Hi all. I'm usually in the Vue d'esprit forum, but I have a question about Photoshop. What is the best/easiest way to extract or remove something from a photo? For instance, say I have a photo of my dog, and I want to delete everything thats in his background. What is the best method for doing that? Or maybe removing the dog and leaving the background is best...? Whichever way is fine, but the end result will be me making a mask with the dog pic. I'm assuming PS is the best prog to use. If not plz let me know. thanx in advance :)

The best "non-destructive" method is to lasso the dog and add a "quick-mask".

Using the "extract" filter is another method, but this is destructive as it actually removes pixels from the image.

Alpha Channels are another direction...

here are some links to similar questions and possible solutions.

If you think you want to try a specific method and want some direction, just post back and we'll work-out a quick step-by-step

Well, I've read through all your suggestions. I am now messing a bit with knockout 2(since i already had it)but it isnt working as easily as they make it look on the flash video ...im not surprised :) So the specific method that i think I want to go with is the Extract tool in PS. A step-by-step would be awesome retrocity. And just so you know, the pic I'm currently dealing with is a dog with long hair and his background has many different colors in it. Thanx

I loathe the extract filter - don't bother with it. Just use the lasso tools. In the end it works out quicker and more effective.

i c ....well maybe i'll check those out a bit more. I liked the magnetic one, but it still would bleed into the dog in certain areas. ....that was a pain.

Whatever technique you try you will end up with a few imperfections in your selection so go into quick mask mode as a final step. Just switch between white and black to increase or decrease your select combined with the right size brush will make your selection perfect.
