The best "non-destructive" method is to lasso the dog and add a "quick-mask".
Using the "extract" filter is another method, but this is destructive as it actually removes pixels from the image.

Well, I've read through all your suggestions. I am now messing a bit with knockout 2(since i already had it)but it isnt working as easily as they make it look on the flash video ...im not surprised :) So the specific method that i think I want to go with is the Extract tool in PS. A step-by-step would be awesome retrocity. And just so you know, the pic I'm currently dealing with is a dog with long hair and his background has many different colors in it. Thanx

Hi all. I'm usually in the Vue d'esprit forum, but I have a question about Photoshop. What is the best/easiest way to extract or remove something from a photo? For instance, say I have a photo of my dog, and I want to delete everything thats in his background. What is the best method for doing that? Or maybe removing the dog and leaving the background is best...? Whichever way is fine, but the end result will be me making a mask with the dog pic. I'm assuming PS is the best prog to use. If not plz let me know. thanx in advance :)
