THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: program freezez (anyone else seen this?)

Vintage ( ) posted Mon, 13 January 2003 at 1:43 PM · edited Thu, 23 January 2025 at 1:48 PM

I tried reinstalling it several times but it seems whenever I open an object I created or imported the system takes forever and when I force it, it crashes. primitives load fine as do textures...anyone have any idea what is causing it? any help would be much appreciated thanks!

How much memory have you given to Bryce? Also, do you have anything else open at the same time? Lin

I have 384 megs of RAM. I was running my MP3 player at the same time, but even with that closed it still causes problems.

Two questions, what OS are you using? and does this happen after a reboot when Bryce is the first and only app running?

One problem that I have seen with W98Se as concerns Bryce and some other memory intensive apps is leakage. You may indeed physically have "x" Mb or Gb of RAM but what can be accessed is another story. Some programs do not always release all of their resources back to the general pool upon closure. That is why I asked about a reboot (all the RAM in the general pool is available except for that reseved for the OS) and no other apps running. Corel's PhotoPaint is one that can do this when after a seriously heavy session of photomanipulation. Various virus check programs are another bad one for this.

Heheh... I know all about the memory "dissappearing" especially since I have a modest 128Mb on the computer that I'm currently using. Windows is bad that way sometimes. However on a good note, AnalogX software makes a free utility program called freemem that does a nice job. It accounts for memory addresses that are not being used and makes them available. Dunno if that helps. L8R!

Actually it's called MaxMem... Heh... Pardon me... ;) Should have clicked the "about" button before I posted the first time. D'oh! L8R!

Memory shouldn't be a problem...i run bryce on a PII 300Mhz comp w/ only 64Mb of ram and only a 4Mb Graphics Accelerator..and it runs fine (well as fine as can be expected) i suggest u start up the program and before u do the task that makes it crash go to the End Task menu (Alt + Ctrl + Del) and one by one end the programs that u don't need...then try the task and hopefully u should isolate the problem (i'm assuming that its crashing due to a program working in the background that is clashing with it)

wow thanks for all the help. I think what a part of it might be is I have quite a few custom models I have made...I would say well over a hundred. I think I might be bogging down my system by having all those so I am slowly weeding through and deleting the ones I don't use anymore. I will also try that program MaxMem and see if that helps. I have a feeling my CD-R which is external USB connecting through a USB expansion card could be a culprit in resource theft. I will keep everyone posted as to my progress. =) thanks again all!

Aye, if you're running '98, go into MSConfig and remove all of the BS programs that might be bogging you down. I've never needed any memory-management software on either my P2-266 with 64MB, or on my Athlon's with 512 MBs, but Rambooster is a good one, too. Clears your memory right out...
