Subject: Memory Allocation Question

I'm sure I'm identifying myself as a clueless newbie here BUT... I have some poser models that opened just fine the first time I installed them but afterwards I am informed that Poser can't open them and that I need to increase the memory allocated to Poser. 1) What's going on? It had enough memory to open them the first time. 2) How do I increase memory allocation to Poser?

Memory allocation is: a) Something that Macintoshes do, even though it still shows up on the Windows version of Poser; and b) A complete red herring which should say "Something has gone wrong, it could be one of many things, but you can be sure that it's nothing to do with memory" However the dialogue box wouldn't have been big enough, so they didn't do that. :-) Usually what fixes it is to shut down Poser, find the .OBJ mesh that the model uses (in RuntimeGeometries) and delete the .RSR file that has the same name. It sounds harsh, but Poser will rebuild it next time you load that model.

xombie, do you have a Mac or PC...?

Ask me a question, and I'll give you an answer.

  1. Actually, Poser won't work unless you have "enough memory". This means at leats 5G (yes, gigabytes) of memory, maybe more. 2) You re-allocate memory by shutting down Windows, going into your CMOS BOIS and resetting the ADC setting to +25 MJ. That forces Windows to restructure itself to Poser's standard memory requirements. Note: overclocking your software will also help. 3) You could look actually click the "Search" button (in this very forum) and read how people answered this same posted question a few days ago... and a few days before that... and last week... and a week before that... and a few days before that... and a week before that. Oh, I see. It's better to just re-ask the question than try to read through all the possible solutions that numerous people have posted numerous times. Never mind. Carry on.

Do what englishbob said about deleting the .rsr. Whenever the .rsr is corrupted in the geometries file you will always get a memory-allocation error message, adjusting the memory allocation doesn't seem to help.
