MadDog31, as far as 3D World Magazing goes, they "ideally" want pics that are rendered out at least at 3,000 pixels wide or high. Files under 3mb can be e-mailed, anything bigger has to go by normal mail on a cd. Pick up the mag or go to their website for more details. They exhibit around 10-15 submitted pics every month. I assume they just liked Rochr's enough to put it on the cover.(?) The other big 3D Magazine called "Computer Arts" also accepts and prints submissions monthly. http://www.computerarts.co.uk/ AgentSmith

Congratulations Rochr! I haven't gotten my subscription copy of 3D World yet, but always look forward to it.

Good job, Rudy, if you're reading this. As previously mentioned, it's very difficult to get any work noticed in Bryce as there's a lot of elitism and bias towards it by those that can afford 10K's-worth of Max & Maya, so getting a Bryce pic published is doubly well done. I've never dared submit anything to a magazine, it's too scary. The first Bryce images I saw in that mag were by Roobol and James Lee, so you're keeping good company!
Ehrmm...Thank you, thank you! :) The timerider seems to be a popular guy these days... :) I really have Ta Kimble from Renderosity Team to thank for this! Shes the one who sent the pic to 3D World! Trust me, i was equally surprised, that they wanted the pic for the mag. Ive always thought of it, as one for high-enders. Kinda fun, having a Bryce pic as a cover, considering that many of the people reading the magazine, refer to Bryce as a "playground" app. :) And i also want to add, that you guys have a big hand in this! If it werent for all the support youve given me, this piece wouldnt even exist! And yeah, Bryce still rules!!! ...but we all know that already, right? :) Thanx again! Rudy

And a well deserved congratulations from my hand. A very good example to show the snobs that with so-called low-end software high-end results can be achieved. A good carpenter never blames his tools.

Makes me think of a few conversations with non-Brycing friends of mine..."So you just run the program and it makes the pictures for you?" ME: No, you know I'm an artist, you've known me since Elementary School, Bryce is just one of several programs I use to create digital artwork with, it's just instead of a brush I use programs to create the art with. Digital art is like model-making, photography, sculpture, brushwork all rolled into one. And the room doesn't fill up with canvases. "So...you just point the virtual camera at something and push the button?" Yeah, sure, whatever. "I think the pictures you make that way are cool." Thanks. It really isn't about the tool, it's about the artist. Bryce just happens to be one of my very favorite tools. It does deserve a little more respect. (Poser gets dissed in the letters columns of 3D World Mag, as well as Bryce. Not in the articles in the magazine though, as a rule. The editors of the magazine know that most of their readers are likely to be users of Bryce, Vue, Poser, etc., not high-end programs like Maya. But since Maya and others are some of their regular advertisers, and the articles are written by some very High-end artists, they do dwell on those programs in the tutorials. But they do a good job of printing mainly tuts that can be applied by the reader to just about any comparable program. I've applied the essence of tutorials to Bryce many times with...IMHO...good results.) Tjohn

I think the "problem" I had with Bryce when I first started with it (way back last year!) was I was afraid to do anything with the finished product. Therefore I was limited by the software, and it showed. But now I'm looking on it more as a tool to get the basics down with, and the result is that I'm liking my images more. To be honest, I look back on the stuff I did a few months ago and cringe. I was just reading some stuff on Jim Burns, my favourite sci-fi artist. You look at his pictures - the incredible characters and staggeringly realistic faces he paints - and then read that he admits he has "no natural talent" for drawing people. Instead, he gathers together huge stacks of magazines and photos and uses them as references! So it's good enough for Jim Burns, it's good enough for me.
tuttle: I agree with you about Jim Burns. I just purchased a collection of his art called "Lightship" not long ago. Excellent work.

If you're interested, there's a book called Fantasy Art of the New Millenium about SF illustrations. Just took it out of the library. It's a couple of years old, but it does feature Burns. And some other SF illustrators, like Lee, Howe or Rick Berry, my favourite. (http://www.braid.com/ or http://www.papereye.com/). Rochr, of course, congratulations, but I still like "The Artifact" more. :-)

Excellent image, and as theyve said... getting a bryce image past the high end app snobs onto a cover is doubly impressive. Getting anything better then "why what pretty things youve made 'considering your using crayons' impression i get from them sometimes", is a great. Im sure you bet out many 10k program renders to get there, but then youve always been able to get a special feel in all your pictures, regardless of the base software used.
Doh! - didn't see this when I posted my tribute! - well, big congrats again Rudy! - it's a buzz, and will certainly help bring your name to the fore, and you may be amazed at the interest it generates from elsewhere! - I was! ;) - - And yeah! - Jim Burns is one of THE illustrators that inspired me to do what I do now! - Lightship (one of my college favoutites too) is great, but also check out Transluminal - he is another traditional artist (with immense technical skills) who is/has moved over to digital now!

Seriously, if ANY of you guys/girls get your Bryce pics even INSIDE some magazine, tell us, at least so we can be envious...much less on the front cover. Check out 3D World's Magazine cover (#34) http://www.3dworldmag.com Clickable link is to the pic, "The Timerider" in his gallery.
