Subject: Bizarre OBJ rendering problem

I have a prop with a problem. If I render it with any bump mapping I get horizontal lines running across it which seem to line up with the lines in the mesh. That is, the mesh seems to be showing up when I bump map. Umm. No problem without bump maps. Perfectly smooth without bump maps. I have checked the mesh in four separate programs to verify that all the polygons are welded to one another. Has anyone seen this before? I built the prop in Wings 3D, then pulled it into the cloth room where it was clothified. I only liked the left side of the cloth effect, so I took the left side into RDS 5.5 and did a "copy, flip, attach" to create a new object. Then I processed it in UV Mapper Pro. All of this usually works fine, and it seemed to until I applied a bump map.... Could it be something like "pixel smearing" from bad UV mapping? Are there circumstances under which the mesh grid would reveal itself like this? Are there any obscure utilities I can use to try to fix the OBJ? Umm. Anyone? Why am I the only one who has these bizarre problems? Perhaps I am special.... And, umm. Please don't hassle me about the prop.... :)

Well, um, that DEPENDS... I assume you've verified that it isn't something on your map? Do the lines seem to match the mesh? What happens when you change the lighting? I have had weird artifacts that I couldn't understand, tweaking displacement settings got rid of them. Do you have a different app to test render in? You can always remap it and see.

(Roll laugh track now) It looks like it might be "Ray Dream Damage".... Lighting does not change the effect. The patterning does seem to reflect the object mesh.... I have run several test bump maps, each with the same effect. I have now run it through, lessee, six different programs for testing. Hmm. Have I used the word "bizarre" yet?

No, I take that back. The artifacts are there on the original Wings 3D model, and they definitely reflect the mesh. Huh. How weird is that? Yet there is no such problem with a higher resolution version of the same model from Wings, nor with other items I have created in the program....

I have similar problems if I render in P5 with the firefly renderer and raytrace on and if I'm using a procedural texture (i.e. the woodgrain tex). I don't have the problem with the P4 renderer. Very frustrating.

That's funny.... My problem goes away when I use the Firefly. It also goes away when I use procedural bumps with the P4-style renderer. Hmm. At this point I am assuming that I have discovered one of the flaws with P5.... Grumble....
