Subject: Curious Labs Website and Bundle Offerings

Curious_Labs ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 2:31 PM · edited Wed, 18 December 2024 at 11:03 AM

The Curious Labs web site is running stable again after the issues of the last week. First we had a crash at our service provider. Then after getting the website up and running again we were hit by the worm that you probably heard about in the news. Were now back up and running at 100%. We know that this caused inconvenience for some users, and we apologize. It was unfortunate that many of you received the communication about the new bundle offerings at the same time that the server went offline. As a result weve temporarily lowered the price of ALL Curious Labs products including the bundle offerings - by $10 for the next week. In the future well continue to post details on any website issues directly into this forum. If youve any issues that you need direct support on please email service@curiouslabs.com Regards, The Curious Labs Team

Hi 'The Curious Labs Team', Thanks for the info. >Wonders< "Why am I uninspired by the idea of replying to a 'team'?" Not being sarcastic.... just genuinely puzzled. I really would look for a real human being to interact with the communities, if I were you. mac

maclean ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 3:27 PM

In fact, I'll go one further. Why don't you just INVENT a person, if you can't afford one? Call him 'Pinko Pallino'. Hey... Max Headroom did ok for a long time... mac

dampeoples ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 3:30 PM

So avatar lab is available for mac now? And the links to the bundles on the front page are broken.

vilters ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 3:34 PM

Hey great to hear from you. Good luck with the site. Pssst : any news on a next Poser upgrade? Timeline? Greetings, Tony

FWIW, I second maclean's ideas about inventing a Curious Labs "avatar" to interact with the forum. "The team" does sound a bit aloof. I vote for "Curious George" as a more stately moniker than "Pinko Pallino." my $.02 worth, --lordbyron

Crescent ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 3:48 PM

If they have Curious George as their avatar, there will be even more claims of monkey business going on. ;-) Oh, how I hated those books!

krimpr ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 4:03 PM

Yeah, like where the heck is Tori? She was a great representative and ambassador for CL. Or was she mindlessly thrown out with the bathwater too...

Curious_Labs ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 4:19 PM

Dampeoples, thanks for the info. We're fixing the Avatar Lab issues now.

Dave-So ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 4:34 PM

Speaking for myself, maybe.... Just kinda weird you guys would advertise to the folks that already have your stuff. I have P4 and P5 already, and I think most of us have at least 4...other than the folks that got the free 3 version.... Now if you could perhaps get us a good deal on Vue or something, that might work..... Truespace 5.2 for $189 is a good deal, but when I click to buy it, the link goes to that bundle package.....altohugh TS 6.5 is now out, so 5.2 is a bit old... But the bundle offers aren't going to be a purchase for most of us here, IMO....

Check this out...anyone on the team been to this site?

Dave-So ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 4:50 PM

Ah...that's just for reporting bugs and stuff in Poser 5... Why would they want to go there? Really...why hasn't CL bothered to answer any of these questions? The closest I've seen is our buddy Anthony, who is no longer employed by CL....unless there is someone incognito...lurking in the shadows... I think they have abandoned that forum...or perhaps the folks left don't even know its there..as some of the QA folks are gone as well.... In defense.... My last email to CL tech support last week was answered very promptly by the tech support manager, where he referred me to the official tech support form at the CL website...from there I received an answer the next day.....

dampeoples ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 4:53 PM

ok, you fixed the link, although it still says it's available for the mac by the little mac symbol on the front page, and not available for the mac on the product page.

ladynimue ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 5:14 PM

That is very kind of CL to offer a $10 discount. We all appreciate this very much! Thank you from all of us on Renderosity :) ladynimue

I'm with maclean. Is starlet still around!?! Get her out here. She was a great ambassador for the old CL.

maclean ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 6:18 PM

Right, pablo. I have no idea what starlet looked like.... but she sure SOUNDED great with a nick like that! And, boy.... was she efficient! Just get any old Joe Soap to log on as starlet and speak to us. LOL. mac

PabloS ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 6:27 PM

mac I don't know if I should thank you or not. I just got a visual...of both starlet versions :-)

I think they should hire one of the woodies for PR ;)

hauksdottir ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 3:15 AM

Maclean, Tori (Starlet) is still there from what I've heard, and will be glad to know that she is being missed. She was wearing so many hats at the time of release and was deludged soon after. (IIRC, she was handling the website and some beta testers, as well as doing customer service and popping in here occasionally to answer questions.) She managed to keep a smile, too. With a smaller core group now, I doubt if her workload has lightened much, but she is probably still able to smile when she answers the phone. An avatar (such as Mavis Beacon) might be "suitable" for expressing the combined point-of-view of a company which makes software enabling virtual people to exist, but I strongly suspect that Woodie's kin would be unsatisfying in the longer run. Our personalities come through when we type, so if the voice behind the avatar changed at all, we'd know it. Carolly

maclean ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 2:43 PM

carolly, Thanks for the info. I actually found out from another source that tori/starlet is still around. Good to know (just in case). My avatar suggestion was made with my tongue firmly in my cheek. A gentle hint that messages from 'The Curious Labs Team' don't quite have the same personal touch as from an individual. I know it doesn't matter a hoot who tells you what, as long as the info is correct, but I've always felt that CL was a little bit special in the software world, simply because we knew who we were talking to. It won't make any difference to corporate policy, but is it really so hard to find one human being who can post the CL announcements? I mean, logging on as 'Curious Labs' has got to be a joke for a start! It's like logging on as 'The Empire State Building'! LOL. mac

JohnRender ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 2:43 PM

{ALL Curious Labs products including the bundle offerings - by $10 for the next week. } Isn't this an ad? Shouldn't this post be in the Product Showcase forum? Or are vendors allowed to post commercials in this forum now? Or is CL exempt from the "no advertising" rule since their "partnership" with this site?

maclean ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 4:12 PM

I knew George Bush thinks he's the policeman of the world. I didn't know JohnRender thinks he's the policeman of Renderosity. mac

starlet ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 7:15 PM

Okay, Okay...you win...here I am. ;) (But the email that isn't getting answered while I post is your fault, remember that!) I am still here, just very very very busy these days and SHHH it is actually ME posting under the Curious Labs Team! I just seem waaaay more important as the CLT than Starlet. :) If you guys need personal lovin' you can always email service@curiouslabs.com for your bit of personal attention. Posting as the CLT just helps you notice "official" announcements and etc. better. I love you guys dearly and there are many others here with me working hard for you guys and gals...stop threatening to make scary avatars of us!! (At least no vicky in a temple for me k?) Just because you don't see me anymore, doesn't mean I am not here. Please be nice to the CLT! Gotta get back to looking for those lost serial numbers for folks... Thanks Carolly! You're right...busy busy busy. :) Tori AKA Starlet and CL Customer Service and Web Goddess :)

Dave-So ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 7:57 PM

Well, miss starlet...thanks for the show :) By all means..official announcemnts as CLT will probably fly...but for your (CL) presence on here....your, starlet or Tori after the by would be wonderful.... Now get back to work...

Thanks for the post Tori! I'm breathing easier now ;-) Now I'm wondering..."Web Goddess" in a temple maybe? Perhaps in something yellow? :-)

krimpr ( ) posted Thu, 30 January 2003 at 6:43 AM

My respect for CL just got bumped back up about 7 points. Glad to hear that you're still around; you certainly have my respect but can't recall feeling the same about any "team". At least now I know that the team manager knows how to pick good players.....

mon1alpha ( ) posted Thu, 30 January 2003 at 7:17 AM

"I didn't know JohnRender thinks he's the policeman of Renderosity." I don't think that a reasonable point about a company using the correct forum is being the policeman, etc. Is nobody allowed to put forward their opinion anymore? Vendors are just that..they're selling a product. Now that's fine, we'd all be in a fine pickle if CL didn't exist but they are a business and if we're going to have rules then they should apply to every company, no matter how nice they are. Although $10...come on folks, it's not exactly an earth shattering discount :) Now please don't start flaming me with staunch defences of CL, I'm not having a go at them, I'm merely stating my opinion which, I assume, I'm still entitled to.

hauksdottir ( ) posted Thu, 30 January 2003 at 10:00 AM

Tori, Good. {hug} It's better to hear your voice. Even if the official announcements get posted under the name of The Team, having your sig at the bottom will remind us of real people. I didn't tell Pablo that you were the one wearing yellow in the picture, but now that we're thinking about avatars... in temples... just kidding! Besides, all those NVIATWAS don't smile and probably don't have many friends either. Carolly

hauksdottir ( ) posted Thu, 30 January 2003 at 10:16 AM

Maclean, Even if I logged on as CuriousLabs... how long do you think I could post without punning and thus ripping the veil from the corporate face? I might manage a post or two, but sooner or later that warped sense of humor would slip into the keystrokes. Spell-checkers and grammer-checkers do a fair job of finding and fixing things. However, the linguists haven't invented a dyslexia checker, much less attempted a pun-filter. It is an interesting thought, though. These linguists are busy trying to make computers think and respond with personality so that customers will feel at ease when dealing with an automated system. If they ran the algorhythms in reverse, could that strip personality from a real human's typing? Instead of the error message: "cat-like typing detected" would there be a warning when we sound too creative and original to be a fleshless machine? Carolly

maclean ( ) posted Thu, 30 January 2003 at 2:38 PM

Starlet, So you're 'The Curious Labs Team' aka Starlet aka Tori? LOL. I'd be confused at the end of the day! Ah well, at least we know the 'team' is a human being now. And an efficient one, at that. Carolly, I just think the idea of a person logging on as an institution is slightly bizarre. But then, it tickles my bizarre sense of humor too. mon1alpha, I wasn't suggesting that JohnRender shouldn't have his say. It just seemed a litle petty to me to be picking up on such a small point. After all, the vast majority of poser users all check this forum for news and info. If we're going to hassle CL every time they mention a product in an announcement, we may as well give up and go home. mac
