The title describes the action as well as my frustrations at making a suitable water mat and water explosion. My computer keeps crashing when I render scenes with water and explosions so I have to run into the other room and render these scenes on my little brother's computer.

Aldaron ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 8:28 PM

Oooh very nice. Is that just a cloud material?

GROINGRINDER ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 8:32 PM

Yes Aldaron it is one of the volumetric cloud mats.

AgentSmith ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2003 at 8:58 PM

WOW...REAL close. That is REALLY nice!

Very well done.

nitpickers anonymous here ;) when a plane rolls like that the ailerons are moved in a certain way. well, i don't know the technical terms since english isn't my first language, but when a plane flies the two flaps on the wings and on the tail move :D in this case the right wing's aileron should point up, left wing's down, and possibly the tail's stabilizer moved slightly to the left. that and for a bomb to be dropped, more of water "crown" should show. aside from that, great textures, and awesome idea! drac

draculaz ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 12:12 AM

err.. make that the tail's stabilizer to the right :D

GROINGRINDER ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 12:24 AM

Thanks tjohn and draculaz. Yes draculaz the rudder should be offset to the right and the port aileron should be down and starboard aileron should be up. For now this was just a test of the textures of the water explosion. Water explosions are a tricky thing for me because they can be so different depending on just which nanasecond of the event you wish to capture. I wish I could find a high speed series of pictures that capture the whole event at say .01 second intervals.

Here are the parts of my explosion untextured.

Ornlu ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 1:27 AM

that render is SO clean, did you use superfine or premium?

GROINGRINDER ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 1:37 AM

I used regular.

ttops ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 2:39 AM

That looks great GROINGRINDER.

Zhann ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 2:51 AM

Great explosion! just a suggestion (or opinon), the water crown at the water's surface is a little too perfect, these depend on the depth of the water, whether cold or warm water, currents, surface conditons, all effect the crown, more irregularity would be nice...

GROINGRINDER ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 2:59 AM

Thanks ttops and Zhann. Yes more irregularity in the crown would be nice. Hopefully I will look back at this post in a few weeks and think how primitive and ugly this looks compared to what I have to post then.

pidjy ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 3:34 AM

YESSSS! very good work, great explosion, what plane is it? Tomcat? Razorback?

GROINGRINDER ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 3:54 AM

Thanks pidgy. The plane is an f6f-5 hellcat from ww2.

Rayraz ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 4:28 AM

Impressive work. I like the explosion. It might be a bit too clean, it could use some slight noise, but that's just my opinion. I couldn'have done it better myself (I think).

catlin_mc ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 5:13 AM

Is this a follow on from the explosion you were trying to create a while back? If so it is really amazing the progress you have made it looks much more realistic now. I assume you made the explosion in Rhino, you couldn't do a little tutorial could you, I'm still at a very basic level in Rhino and any tips folk can give me on using it would help me a great deal. Cheers Catlin

GROINGRINDER ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 5:29 AM

Hi catlin mc. Yes this is the same explosion I was working with a while back only reworked a little. The three parts on the left were modeled in Rhino while the one on the right was done in Amapi. Two of the parts done in Rhino are simple revolves and the third is basicly a torus with the bottom half sliced off. The one part on the right was an extrusion done in amapi. I have already over promised myself with tutorials, but this one should be short so I will make up one. Don't be impatient.

catlin_mc ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 5:54 AM

Thanks for the fast response GG, I'll wait in patient silence for the tut, no problem. Cheers Catlin

Flak ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 6:49 AM

Hey, GG, pretty sharp image. I'm guessing the explosion in the water is a near miss from anti-aircraft fire rather than anything the plane dropped?

Nice exploxion! This is going to be a nice when finalized!

BOOMER ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 12:39 PM

Looks awesome, GG. Have a question that hasn't been asked. How did you get the blur on the prop to look so good? Very nice motion blur but still keeping the colors and detail. Very nice.

tjohn ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 1:32 PM

I'm betting the prop was done with a 2d pic object and transparency map.

I think it looks great, but then I can't even make semi-okay waves. So when are you doing Snoopy and his Sopwith Camel? :) Lin

GROINGRINDER ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 2:51 PM

Attached Link: prop blur tut

Catlin mc the tut should be along in 15 hours or so. Flak you are absolutely right aa near miss I would have included a couple of air bursts too, but that would have increased render times tremendously and this is a WIP not a final so I left them out. e-artistree Thanks. nu-be That's a good idea, but I am weak on symlats. Boomer the prop blur is from a tut on Steve Sanvitos web site. http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Haven/2470/proptut.html tjohn Good guess. lstrout Thanks I have always loved Snoopy and the Royal Guardsman song "Snoopy vs the Red Baron", but I am not yet up to modeling characters.

You're welcome Boomer.

BOOMER ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 5:44 PM

HUGE thanks to you, Groin. I've been wanting to work on an image like the one I posted here, but just couldn't get the motion blur on the prop to my liking. I was using the sphere to disk method and then putting cones on their side, squashing and then distorting them to cover the rotors. But now, hehe. When I do the image that I have in mind, I'll post that also. I just blasted this one out. Need to get the swirling dust and dirt right.

Looking mighty fine BOOMER. Special thanks to Steve Sanvito for writing the tut. I never would have figured this out on my own.

AgentSmith ( ) posted Thu, 30 January 2003 at 5:32 AM

Reguarding the tutorial; How possible would it have been to make the parts you needed just in Bryce?

GROINGRINDER ( ) posted Thu, 30 January 2003 at 5:39 AM

AgentSmith I cannot reply to that because I am weak in Bryce modeling. The lack of a 4 pane interface really messes me up when I try to model in Bryce and when I go to side or top views I cannot zoom in for some reason.

AgentSmith ( ) posted Thu, 30 January 2003 at 6:01 AM

Lol...whenever I see a 3d modeling program with 4 panes, it really messes ME up. Just curious.

Incarnadine ( ) posted Thu, 30 January 2003 at 11:24 AM

boomer- You need to rotate your blade disk through about 90 degrees. Note that you blade blurs do not line up with the rotor hub. (actually you might want to rotate the mast/hub and pitch links as a group to match the disk, this would be better visually) Now if only we could figure how to decrease the blur as you get down towards the blade root...)

Pass no temptation lightly by, for one never knows when it may pass again!

Zhann ( ) posted Thu, 30 January 2003 at 11:12 PM

GG, I have the same problem when using top and side views, makes it extremely difficult to model things....
