OMG! The crashing sound you heard was my jaw hitting the ground. The subsequent shattering sound was due to the speed it hit!

sirkrite ( ) posted Thu, 30 January 2003 at 7:03 PM

We already heard Mehndi and have the link to the DAZ page with the info. ;) Look down two threads.

So, why am I skeptical? Looks a little weak, I am not holding my breath.

chanson ( ) posted Thu, 30 January 2003 at 7:52 PM

It looks like the free part is simply the render engine. They plan to add model import, posing, and other features later. I'm sure it will be good, but this information actually clarifies the situation a bit. Daz Studio will not be a P5 alternate any time soon. They have the render and model placement parts working (beta), but many, many, many features remain out there. Will be interesting to follow, but I'm glad I'm using P5 for now.

No thank you...I'm stcking with POSER.

Ask me a question, and I'll give you an answer.

I've paid for my copy already ;) I told my 2 kids, my wife & my best mate. Wait & see iamonk, I've not had a single product from Daz that I've not been 100% happy with & I have high hopes for this one too.

wgreenlee1 ( ) posted Fri, 31 January 2003 at 5:30 AM

Is this going to be the final slice of Curious Labs throat.....? First they bring out P5. Then get rid of all the main people responsible. Now this.....

kristinf ( ) posted Fri, 31 January 2003 at 5:49 AM

Brilliant strategy, it'll be marvellous being able to customise it to my own needs. I will no doubt use both Poser and Daz Studio until I am happy with which fulfils my needs. Sod loyalty, I want what does the job best :)

I don't see how anybody could call that weak. We have seen a tiny glimpse of a very ambitious project, and that tiny glimpse is stunning. I love when I have seen. And I also have to say that I have loved all the things I have gotten from DAZ and they have shown a commitment to quality products and customer service (ok, it took a while, but I got a resolution to my problem). And they keep getting better... Victoria 1.0 vs Victoria 3.0, anyone? Personally, I can't wait. Even if the intial offering is a rendering engine that can only "tweak" pz3 files. Best, e.d.

FishNose ( ) posted Fri, 31 January 2003 at 7:03 AM

Well, Anton implied this might be for free months ago in a thread here in the Forum, so I can't say I'm shocked. But amazed and impressed at Daz's smart moves, aye, that I am! All we need is for DAZ to buy up Poser and do the job right. Or let's say that would have been a great solution. It's way too late now. :] Fish

c1rcle ( ) posted Fri, 31 January 2003 at 7:05 AM

It might not be too late it just might be too expensive for Daz to buy Poser.

praxis22 ( ) posted Fri, 31 January 2003 at 8:52 AM

Now that is a smart idea... Viral marketting is always cheaper and far more effective than a more traditional advertising campaign. "studies have shown..." that if you're happy with a product you'll tell two or three others, if you're unhappy, you'll tell 5 or more. A great way to stop people bitching is to simply give it away, people are far more likely to forgive the flaws in something if they didn't pay for it. Look at Netscape and IE. The Browser I use is called Phoenix, it's Version .5 works like a charm, blocks popups, very secure, dumps out every once in a while, but it's a joy to use, it's free.. I wouldn't be surprised if this is an "in house" tool they've had for a while, but what with the P5 debacle, (EULA and bugs) and all, as a content creator they probably saw thier future dwindling without new blood, (new poser users) so they decided to drum up a little business. Very smart move, if only a few % of that 1,000,000 buy something then they should do well. I wonder if 'Rosity will give them a beta forum too? later jb

MallenLane ( ) posted Fri, 31 January 2003 at 9:04 AM

Buying Poser really would not have prevented the need to write a brand new program, with more contemporary and efficient technology under the hood. ML DAZ3D

Astride ( ) posted Fri, 31 January 2003 at 9:10 AM

I won't stick to P5. I don't have to. For P5 didn't wan't to stick with Mac. Sorry. I was always happy with DAZ stuff, so I will happily test it and even pay for what will be needed if it's only the basic renderer which is free. Pierre

thorntoa ( ) posted Fri, 31 January 2003 at 10:31 AM

It looks like the first beta will only have the renderer and some other minor stuff. Soon after they will put in the posing capability. It seems like the final version will be a P4 equivalent with an improved render engine. The plugins will allow you similar capability to Poser 5 but will not be free. Seems pretty exciting to me.

While I'm overjoyed, I think they could have gotten away with 14.99 Premium and 1.99 Platinum. Heh.

c1rcle ( ) posted Fri, 31 January 2003 at 11:52 AM

Plus according to the info we should be able to create our own plugins, which I think will be it's biggest selling point.

xvcoffee ( ) posted Fri, 31 January 2003 at 3:59 PM

I'm bookmarking this and the other thread

iamonk ( ) posted Fri, 31 January 2003 at 4:04 PM

Let me just point out that there was a heck of a lot of hype over P5. I like the idea of the plugins, and Daz seems diverse enough to withstand a blow to the market, BUT (and with me there always is one) if it sounds too good to be true then it usually is.

Taura Noxx ( ) posted Fri, 31 January 2003 at 7:38 PM

[bookmark] I'm liking this thread very much :D

rogergordian ( ) posted Mon, 03 February 2003 at 9:05 AM

Maybe it's me, but I don't see DAZ saying DAZ Studio, or a part of it, will be free. They are saying the beta version of the base program will be free. This implies that the final version will cost us money. "Prior to the release of version 1.0, the base version of DAZ|Studio will be publicly available as a free beta for an undetermined period of time until it is solid."

Momcat ( ) posted Mon, 03 February 2003 at 9:17 AM

and this is a problem?

rogergordian ( ) posted Mon, 03 February 2003 at 10:17 AM

It is a problem if people think we're getting the final version for free, or if people don't want to be beta testers. But then that should be obvious.

Momcat ( ) posted Mon, 03 February 2003 at 12:22 PM

Ahhh, I keep forgetting that few people actually read the product descriptions. You are correct. It should be obvious when it is written so clearly.

cooler ( ) posted Mon, 03 February 2003 at 12:55 PM

rogergordian, I spoke with Dan Farr regarding whether or not the Daz Studio base will be free after the beta testing & here's the skinny... There are NO plans to charge for the base version of Daz Studio (beta or final) as long as the sale of plugin modules & other content support it's free distribution. If, at some point in time economic conditions change after the free release of the final version of Studio 1.0, those plans may have to be reevaluated.

xvcoffee ( ) posted Mon, 03 February 2003 at 3:16 PM

Since this forum is sponsored by Curious Labs it could just disappear.

Momcat ( ) posted Mon, 03 February 2003 at 3:20 PM

Not a chance. This forum is not sponsored by Curious Labs alone. It is primarily sponsored by Bondware as a demo for their services. As long as we all show up, this forum will be here. If not, another will take its place. This isn't the only game in town, just the biggest at the moment.

Mehndi ( ) posted Mon, 03 February 2003 at 3:27 PM

This forum won't disappear since it earns it's own way due to sales of products in it's marketplace. Same can be said for other forums out there too. This is why you find forums running stores, so as to "not disappear" even if there are no more sponsors left.

xvcoffee ( ) posted Mon, 03 February 2003 at 4:39 PM

Will DAZ be a sponsor?

Mehndi ( ) posted Mon, 03 February 2003 at 5:26 PM

Who knows?
