Subject: Re: texturing new models

bowen ( ) posted Thu, 06 February 2003 at 1:04 AM · edited Thu, 14 November 2024 at 12:22 PM

Could someone please help with how to texture models that do not include texture maps for them. I have also created some simple models of my own and wish to learn how to texture them. My wife is an incredible artist and if I can learn how to apply textures to new models you may see some exciting new models available ( I just haven't told her she has to use the computer to do her art on models). So if you can help me it would be great THANKS

Texturing can be done alot of different ways, but the way most go for a while is with UV Mapper. You can download UV mapper from the link above created by Steve Cox, there is a pro version and a free version. I have both, I still use both, but I use Pro more because of the extra features, but you should start off on the Free version. Now, after you have gotten it, what you have to do is read on Steve's page for some of the tutorials to get you aquainted with the software. To start you off you will need object (.obj) files, that is all you can use in it. After you load your first object,(file, load model) go to the edit, new map, and choose Planner, like the setting here and then you will see your object in mesh. Then you can go to edit, select by group and start the process of taking your model apart and flattening it..after selecting the group or selecting it by material, you then make another map of that, let's say in the y-axis looking down on it and it makes a map.... After you have completed your template, you save the model (very important), then save your template as a bmp, bring it into a paint program, paint your map to what you like then go to your 3D software, import your models and apply your map. And that is about it....hope that helps, there is more, much more but you will have to read up on tutorials around here and other places like Daz's arcana. Sharen

See this is a quicky, I got the map, remapped it as a box...normally I wouldn't do a box for this, saved the template, applied material etc, brought it into Poser then applied the map that I made (.jpg)....looks pretty bad, but just wanted you to see what you do....not too hard, just takes alot of practice and patience. Good try, sharen. Don't you just love it when you make all these screen shots and explain it all, and the person doesn't even reply? Oh well, maybe he/she will read it eventually. Meanwhile, I'd keep the link for the next time the question's asked. mac

Thankyou Sharen for all the trouble you went 2, sorry I took so long to reply but after staying up all night trying to create something on my primative system I had to get some sleep. Bowen, that is not a problem....I am glad it will help you if it does. If you have any other questions please just ask. I am not really sure if this will work with a MAC, because I use a PC. Sharen

bowen ( ) posted Fri, 07 February 2003 at 4:47 AM

Well thats really good news because I also use a pc although mine is well passed its use by date allthough it can still run maya 4. howeva how fast it runs maya 4 is another story.

maclean ( ) posted Fri, 07 February 2003 at 2:26 PM

Sorry, folks. My bad. I looked at the date and saw 2/7 and automatically translated it as the 2nd of the month. Since I was reading this on the 7th, I thought no one was replying. Apologies, bowen and regards to Oz. I'm scottish and have never gotten used to this american habit of reading the month before the day. LOL. mac

maclean ( ) posted Sat, 08 February 2003 at 10:22 AM

Yeah, I've roomed with aussies, kiwis and americans, and everyone has they're own peculiarites, (especially us 'jocks' LOL). I love all 3 races. Such a change from the miserable brits. Maybe that's why I live in italy... to get away from depressing people. mac PS Only donkeys eat our national emblem.... the thistle. Mind you, up in the north of scotland, they are a bit strange... LOL.

steveshanks ( ) posted Wed, 19 February 2003 at 2:59 PM

Mac if your Scottish that make you a Brit LOL..Steve, on the border :o)

maclean ( ) posted Wed, 19 February 2003 at 3:53 PM

Oh sure, I'm a Brit, just not a miserable one! Brit, Scot, Jock, whatever. I don't much care what people call me. My old man was in the RAF and all the scots were called 'Jock'. It never seemed to bother anyone at the time. People get too sensitive nowadays. Some of my favorite jokes are about the scots and I roll about when I see people taking the piss out the scots accent on TV. In fact, I do it myself. Och aye, the noo! It's a braw, bricht, moonlicht nicht, the nicht! Although, maybe 'haggis' would be a bit much. mac PS If you're on the border, move north quick and join us before we invade! LOL.
