Subject: Members-Only Galleries

heyas; okay, did i miss the memo on this one? you now have to sign up with a rendo account to view the galleries?? although this make a certain amount of sense (you can really only activate the 'no nudity' thing on a real account, right?), it's also kinda annoying that you can't just send people to your rendo gallery any more. i mean, not as easily as you used to.

Oh, really? I didn't hear about this one either.

There was a thread on this before. I think they are trying to reduce the number of people ripping off galleries (or at least have more ability to track graphic thieves), but, as far as I understood, you can still have a visitor view your gallery without getting an account by having them click on your gallery (rather than from the general galleries.

Here's the link to the other thread.

Also, I think you can link to individual images. At least when the other thread was in discussion it worked for me then.

Thank you dialyn and Kendra. I think it's good if they are trying to do something about thieves who steal people's images from the galleries and display them as their own on their sites (as long as there's still the option of giving a direct link to an image or your gallery to your friends and clients).

boulder ( ) posted Sun, 09 February 2003 at 12:53 PM

How is this going to stop anyone stealing images. If someone wants to steal pics they form an account, takes 5 minutes false name etc and then you take the pics. In fact I can not see any reason for this at all.

dialyn ( ) posted Sun, 09 February 2003 at 1:40 PM

Well, maybe it is under the heading of trying to find a solution. So it only stops lazy thieves. I'm sure better ideas would be welcome. We all know people who are intent on being dishonest will get around almost any security system, which is why so many sites have had to stop offering tutorials and free downloads. So what's the answer? We can give up. That's what the thieves want. We can stop posting. There's a solution. Other ideas?

bloodsong ( ) posted Sun, 09 February 2003 at 5:44 PM

heyas; no, i'm sure i sent somebody the url to one of my images, by exact link, and he said it was asking him to sign in. well... i can see how having to have an account can provide some... possible security. they have to agree to the tos, they have to say they are over 13, blah blah blah.... (of course, they can lie), and their isp can be tracked or whatever. but that ain't gonna tell you who took your picture. they could just make the blasted things un-downloadable... er, un-save-able or whatever. thanks for the link to the cluing in, dialyn :)

bloodsong ( ) posted Sun, 09 February 2003 at 5:46 PM

oh, i see! have to add in the byname and whatnot. i'll give that a try. :)

dialyn ( ) posted Sun, 09 February 2003 at 5:54 PM

You do get in trouble if you leave out the whatnot. ;)

AgentSmith ( ) posted Sun, 09 February 2003 at 6:16 PM

It's to stop people from using spider or leaching programs to mass download pics from the larger main gallery links (i.e.; What's New, etc.) But yes, you can link to your own personal gallery, or individual pictures and have anyone go see them without having to sign on. AgentSmith

AgentSmith Sorry to sound contrary, but if the membership thing is used to stop mass downloads of pics from the gallery, what on earth are you guys doing selling a mass downloader for pics? http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?ForumID=12357&Form.ShowMessage=1095067 Just curious old chap. :)

AgentSmith ( ) posted Mon, 10 February 2003 at 6:27 AM

Yeah, yeah, I had heard about it. Marketplace is definetly not my work area, lol. I'm still too low on the totem pole. AgentSmith

ROTFL.. I know that feeling. :) Thanks anyway AS, it just struck me as amusingly odd.

Crescent ( ) posted Mon, 10 February 2003 at 11:36 AM

Trust me, that program was brought up in discussion before it was pointed out in the member forums, and for many of the same reasons that everyone here has pointed out (and then some.) Cres - who's probably at the base of the totem pole, looking up at AS. ;-)

Questor ( ) posted Mon, 10 February 2003 at 12:13 PM

Strange though it may sound Crescent, you're one of the few around here I do trust. Clint apparently is "looking into it" so I guess we'll find out sooner or later what's happening there. Ain't it fun running around the base of the pole while the leaders rotate on top of it? smirk You don't have to answer that, it's erm... rhetorical. :)

Crescent ( ) posted Mon, 10 February 2003 at 12:49 PM

The program has been removed. Thanks again, Clint! I appreciate the compliment, Questor. It really means a lot. In regards to this program, sometimes things get overlooked in a site this big. I used to do project development/management, so I'm used to looking for all the ways something could go wrong, and this program raised all sorts of flags. I know how it was meant to be used, but I also know how it would get used. Unfortunately, those are very different things. For a Monday, things are definitely looking good! ;-) Cheers!

Questor ( ) posted Mon, 10 February 2003 at 1:16 PM

Yes, I saw Clint's post. Nice that he acted on it so quickly. And yes, there's nothing like a good start to the week is there? :) But then, the other way to look at it is... there's another four days to go yet.

Slynky ( ) posted Thu, 13 February 2003 at 3:47 PM

lol, 100,000 members, and they're worried about the random entrants ripping it off?
