kstar__2 ( ) posted Mon, 24 February 2003 at 7:53 AM · edited Sun, 01 December 2024 at 6:25 AM

hello everyone, i'm new here, and i recentely started to use bryce 5, but when i search for models, almost everything is in 3ds format, wich i can't import to bryce, but on every site is visit, 3ds models are for bryce too, now do i need a converter to convert them to obp format, or is it just not possible to import a 3ds?

SAMS3D ( ) posted Mon, 24 February 2003 at 8:38 AM

I don't understand, you should be able to just import straight .3ds...Sharen

kstar__2 ( ) posted Mon, 24 February 2003 at 8:39 AM

I can import 3DS just fine in Bryce5 on my windows pro system. I can't import 3d studio max files. Also, most files are zipped and you have to uncompress before importing. If your file has a .zip extension get winzip or stuffit. The free versions work fine for unzipping. Stuffit will also handle Mac .sit zip formats.

kstar__2 ( ) posted Mon, 24 February 2003 at 9:02 AM

what's the extension for 3d studio max than?

gregsin ( ) posted Mon, 24 February 2003 at 9:03 AM

yes you should be able to import 3ds models into Bryce as long as they are not in 3ds Max format.

gregsin ( ) posted Mon, 24 February 2003 at 9:04 AM

the importable extension is .3ds

kstar__2 ( ) posted Mon, 24 February 2003 at 9:17 AM

well, i tried it, i downloaded various 3DS versions of the models on this site: http://www.theforce.net/scifi3d/starwars/alliancecraft.html but they all give this error: "an unexpected error has occured(invalid format) btw, i have to select "all files (.) to see the 3ds files when i want to import them. maybe yuo can give me a link to a model that does work with your bryce, so that i can test it.

lots of free 3ds models here. You might want to try .obj format and see if you can import that format also. I don't remember if the patch had anything to do with importing files or not but if you havn't installed it yet you might try that.

gregsin ( ) posted Mon, 24 February 2003 at 9:59 AM

I just tried the republican cruiser from your sight and it opened just fine. Maybe the file fot corrupted or it didn't unzip correctly, I don't know what else you could try.

kstar__2 ( ) posted Mon, 24 February 2003 at 10:00 AM

that's the one that didn't work for me :S and the models on that other site didn't work either hmm, i might re-install it and try it again :(

For MAX, an object file is '.3DS' a MAX scene is '.max' (if you have character studio there will also be biped files which are '.bip'

Toolset: Blender, GIMP, Indigo Render, LuxRender, TopMod, Knotplot, Ivy Gen, Plant Studio.

heck, my preferred import format is .3ds. I try to use them whenever possible, tho I've also imported .dxf and .lwo, with no appreciable problems (other than them coming in upside down, which I suspect is just a difference given to primacy of XYZ coordiates). Haven't tried the Force.net stuff yet (even though I've got..oh.. about 60 megs worth..;). Try downloading again, and make sure you get the .3ds ones..I know the site does have several versions of most of the models. I've downloaded .max ones by mistake..

I wish I'd said that.. The Staircase Wit

If you have to select view all files to see the 3ds then it is most likely still zipped. Also, are you going to 'Files'>'import object>? I used to use Winzip to unzip files but then needed stuffit for a .sit file and would never go back. Stuffit is so great! Hope this helps. Angela

i use the triangle next to "create" and than import, i set it to "all files" and i click on the 3ds (witch i always unzip first, i'm not that of a noob ;p) but i'm going to try ang25's way ASAP. thanks everyone:D

Ang25 ( ) posted Mon, 24 February 2003 at 11:30 AM

I think the triangle under create only works for .obj files but I'm sort of new too so I could be wrong. Ang

Rayraz ( ) posted Mon, 24 February 2003 at 11:51 AM

To import bryce-native formats you should use the little triangle next to create and then use the import function. If the format isn't a bryce-native format you should use files/import object.

That's the problem - use the OS Menu: File-Import Object. The Create Triangle is for .OBP's, a native Bryce Format.

Aldaron ( ) posted Mon, 24 February 2003 at 11:58 AM

Yes do as Ang25 said, use the import under the file menu. Where you were is to import .obp files which are bryce native obect files. Other native files are .mat which are material files and accessed by the triangle next to "edit". .bsk are sky files, little triangel next to "sky & fog" all others are imported under the file menu

kstar__2 ( ) posted Mon, 24 February 2003 at 1:35 PM

god, i fee like such an idiot for not-knowing that n_n i do know about those sky files and stuff, so i ain't that bad luckely:D

Rayraz ( ) posted Mon, 24 February 2003 at 2:05 PM

Glad you got it worked out, I just assumed you were using file -> import.
