Here is a quick render of a Pepper's Ghost from the tut ShadowWind posted here. Very handy tut, btw. I'm not really happy with the results. Haven't figured out how to get only portions of the ghost to show, such as the lower portion fading out. Also, I didn't realize that the Marlene model was SO BAD. But anyway, just playing around.

Thanks for trying out my tutorial. I think it has to do with the lighting that you are using on the ghost side. What light are you using? Usually ghosts are done with spotlights that have very tight beams and in Vue it's necessary I've found to make the softness a bit higher than normal to get that fade off.

I'll check back here and I'll be glad to help you with it...

The spot on the ghost side is a quad spot, with a spread of 5 degrees, power of 5 and a fall off of 50%. It's in fairly close, dead front of the ghost and up high. For whatever reason, the Quad Spot won't let me put in a softness variable. Should I change to a regular spot?

Okay, I deleted the quad spot, and here is what happened! The Ghost is still strongly visible, and there is NO lighting on the ghost side of the glass. Huh?

Okay, you gotta turn the ambiant light off... this is better, but not yet there.

ShadowWind ( ) posted Thu, 27 February 2003 at 11:25 PM

Yeah, that has to do with it. I usually enclose the ghost side in a box made up of walls (not within a cube) that keep the light from getting to the ghost while keeping the other side lit. You might try that...

ShadowWind ( ) posted Thu, 27 February 2003 at 11:27 PM

The walls should be flat black with no ambience or diffuse. I didn't shut off the Ambience for Misfortune Teller, so I didn't put that in the tutorial, but it is important to keep light off the ghost side except for the spots...

You should be able to add a spot at wide range toward the girl to lighten the scene up on the solid side without effecting the ghost side. You can use multiple spots to light the entire room...

Hope this helps...

Where can I find the ghost tutorial? Phil

Attached Link: http://www.shadowwindmanor.com

Right here. And then pick tutorials from the top bar. There is one for Vue and for Bryce.

Many thanks! Have to give it a try someday. Btw. your image "Misfortune teller" really rocks!!! Phil

Thanks WingedOne. I added the ambient light comment into the tutorial so others won't have trouble runwolf13. Thanks again. ShadowWind

Thanks ShadowWind. I'll work up some new models and stuff and see about trying out the technique on something more "substancial" than the objects in Vue! Thanks again!
