Subject: ADMIN: On reposting images as a protest

kbennett ( ) posted Sat, 01 March 2003 at 8:27 AM · edited Fri, 24 January 2025 at 2:21 AM

Whilst we can see the purpose behind it, this practice goes against the purpose of the galleries which is as a place to disply your artwork. If you wish to use an image as a protest medium, by all means invite folks to leave a supportive comment but please do not employ the 'sign it and repost' method. The current entries will be left as they are, but any more will be removed. Thanks, Kevin, Moderator.

Upon further evaluation of this matter, we have had to come to the conclusion that all "duplicate-Gallery-Images" will be deleted. The Original Image will be left. We are however, saving all the images that have been posted and sending them to Morgan via her email, so that she may add the signatures to her Original Image. Thank you for your understanding in this matter. ladynimue

He understands the situation and will delete his image. Do not bother sending anything to his email; the resultant file size will be too large and Hotmail will bounce it.

ladynimue ( ) posted Sat, 01 March 2003 at 11:28 AM

Morgan, I will be very happy to work with you on this matter. I have saved all of the images and can combine just the signatures into one Image. Let me know if this is what you wish to do, as I stated before. The intention was never to have you delete your image, only to not have mass uploads of the same image. Sincerely, ladynimue PS Please forgive me for the Gender mix-up :( I am forever stuck in the Arthurian Legends Era!

mlevans ( ) posted Sat, 01 March 2003 at 11:54 AM

The gender mix-up is of no consequence at all. In this environment, sex is only an issue if we make it one. If the size of that file is not too large, then that is fine with me. I just know that others have tried sending me attachments lately to no avail.

ladynimue ( ) posted Sat, 01 March 2003 at 11:57 AM

I shall go through each image and create one image from the Signed part Only. This should make the sending file a reasonable size :) Glad to help out! ladynimue

pakled, well said (and that's what I wanted to say but haven't had time). If you want to protest, do what artists do and make your own statement, not someone elses.

Excuse me, but did I wake up in Russia this morning??? I have NEVER had an image removed from the gallery...and this is VERY upsetting. Geez, last time I looked, this was a free country....well so much for that. I am totally disgusted by this turn of events.

Hawkfyr ( ) posted Sat, 01 March 2003 at 6:09 PM

What does a free country have to do with a privately owned website? Personally I find it in bad taste to basically say"Here..I wanna do this but I don't want to deal with the bandwidth ,so I'll use your site to do it". The staff is trying to accommodate, and they really don't have to. Tom

Avalonne ( ) posted Sat, 01 March 2003 at 6:17 PM

Yes Tom, you are correct. This is a privately held website and we really don't have the right to take advantage of that fact. What I have an issue with is the fact that the image was not offensive in any way....was just an expression of opinion....Who the HELL wants to go to war...do you???? I just find it appalling that we aren't allowed freedom of expression...I guess that is probably my biggest issue here. Nuff said.

Hawkfyr ( ) posted Sat, 01 March 2003 at 6:24 PM

Yes,but don't you see that by asking Renderosity as a company to provide a platform for it.It's puts them in a position of either supporting or not supporting the war. It doesn't seem fair to put them in that position does it? To be fair they would have to accommodate the supporters of the war also right? I mean, it's America right? Tom

Hi Avalonne :)
No one ever even implied that the Original Image was a violation of TOS :)

We (the Mods) went to great lengths to assure that the original signatures were saved and sent to mlevans.
The only objection was to the reposting "en-mass" of the Same Image.

We never asked mlevans to delete his Original Image, only to edit out the part about reposting the image.

Thank you for your understanding :)
Sincerely,
ladynimue

Avalonne, the issue wasn't one of freedom of expression nor was it to do with the content of the image. What it was to do with was the fact that the method employed (1 post becomes 2 becomes 4 becomes 8 becomes 16...) can very rapidly get way out of control and had the potential to totally flood the gallery and soak up huge amounts of bandwidth. The only way to get out of it was to remove all of the images otherwise it would only start over with another 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048... posts. We're sorry if you're offended by this, but we had to act in the interests of the community and the site as a whole. Kevin, Moderator.

Avalonne ( ) posted Sat, 01 March 2003 at 6:35 PM

Ok....I give. I have to agree with what has been said. I guess what upsets me the most is that I feel like I had my freedom of speech taken away...but I can understand where that might be the best way to handle this entire situation. My apologies to anyone I may have offended... p/s It also bummed me out that I had an image removed and I've never had that happen before. Oh well...Live and Learn :-)

kbennett ( ) posted Sat, 01 March 2003 at 6:55 PM

Cool, thanks for understanding :)

International and privately owned forum. Issues such as freedom of speech have no application in an international and privately owned place such as this. Your "rights" are not abrogated in any way; you have the freedom to express yourself however you choose in a public place. By the way, Russia is not a repressive regime; the place you may have been thinking of was the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, which ceased to exist several years ago.

Without wishing to appear naive...protest against what?

BeatYourSoul ( ) posted Mon, 03 March 2003 at 2:28 PM

The ensuing war with Iraq over, hmmm, oil, I suppose. Not to get into a political discussion (which should be moved to The Virtual Tavern), it appears to me that the first war with Iraq was justifiable because they had invaded a neighbor country, which is covered by the UN Security Council. Pres. Hussein should have been removed then. Now, though, the justification is on flimsier ground despite still being covered by the UN Security Council - Iraq has broken many guidelines and rules setup in Resolution 1441, the worst being the expulsion of the UN inspectors some years ago. Personally, I think exile for Hussein with continued UN inspections is the best option. BYS

Hi All, Good Point BYS :) Since this thread has run its course, perhaps everyone could move any Non-Poser Related postings to either the Tavern or the OT forum. I heard a silly rumor that Kevin is giving out Free Drinks in the Virtual Tavern if you mention you are from the Poser Forum ;] Thanks for your understanding on this Matter. Sincerely, ladynimue

Oh, I see, well thanks for telling me what the protest was about :) I protested at a political assembly, personally I feel that online art protests and their discussion belong in a bar.....Lets go to the Taverna ad get rowdy. That KB is a rubbish bartender but he's never there! Mon the soon to be barred ;)
