Subject: Modified texture - a legal question.

I bought Daz's V3 universal textures some time ago. My question is this - am I allowed (legally) to modify that texture for my own private use, and then post a picture using that modified texture in the gallery?

I would suggest you check the DAZ site for their legal stance on usage if you want to be sure. Their FAQs normally cover all those kinds of questions. AFAIK, it shouldn't be a problem if you just post a picture, but don't take my word for it. mac

That couldn't possibly be illegal. That's like saying postwork is illegal...LOL. If you bought the texture and you own it, you should be able to modify it any way you want, as long as it's for your own personal use and not for sale. Laurie

you can legally do whatever you want to it for your own use. u can post any pictures commercially or not with the texture SO LONG AS the texture can not be copied, meaning no flat file of the texture. They don't want you playing with the texture and putting it up as freestuff or reselling it. Daz3d is really good about answering questions about legal uses and copyright if you ask them.

If you take a look at the DAZ license agreement, particularly the introductory paragraphs and definitions, and paragraph 4, I believe you will conclude that the rules are generally those described by the others in this thread. The intro specifically states that it's okay to make images based on DAZ products. Paragraph 4 states the rule about not distributing things from which the DAZ product could be reverse engineeered. And DAZ *does* prohibit selling textures based in any amount on their maps. What you have described generally seems well within your rights under the license, but if you have any doubt, run it past DAZ,; I don't think they'll have a problem with it.

A_ Putting on my official hat... yes you can modify any Daz3d product as long as it's strictly for your own use and there are no plans for free or retail redistribution. In fact a lot of the advances we take for granted, (ERC joints, INJ, MAT, & MOR poses, etc etc) have come from people "tinkering" with existing products. Btw something you might consider is to make your changes in Photoshop/PSP on a separate layer over the existing texture map. That way you could distribute just that layer which would contain only your changes & none of the original map. D.M. Gorski Copyright Enforcement Agent Daz3d Productions Inc.

cooler, Thanks for bringing that up. I just figured out you could do that and was wondering about Daz's stance on the subject.

Thank you all (and especially cooler) for your clearing that up for me. :)
