Subject: Poser Patch Installation for Dummies!/Jeff??

picnic ( ) posted Wed, 17 May 2000 at 6:42 AM · edited Thu, 21 November 2024 at 11:02 AM

Jeff--or anyone that can help, I dled the patch last night and have unzipped it. I'm assuming I delete and replace all these files in my Poser folder. I went back to Larry's page and it says there was to be installation instructions in the archive but I got none. My big question is how one would go about this--just overwrite the files? I'm esp. concerned with the .exe. Then, I'm assuming I need to reboot after I do this. Any tips appreciated. Diane B

Very very first thing, delete all of the plugins in your Poser folder (or move them to a completely different drive if you want to keep them). Trust me on this :) The zip-file should have the details of where each file is to go, simply copy these to the relevant folders. Then restart Poser and you'll have the branr new, shiney 4.02 version. Paul, if you mean details as to where they go--no, no readme or whatever. However, there are folders that direct you to what folders to put things in (geometry/nude baby--or a folder that says put in library/animals--is that what you mean??). I just checked my plug in folder--I honestly don't know what they do--I didn't install them and don't even know how one uses them. They look like they may deal with how Poser deals with things like .dxf, etc. Are they important?? so--I don't need to reboot after I copy the files to the Poser folder? Thanks. I'm about ready to do this. AFter some quirky things with Vicky's clothes (I haven't dled new Vicky update either--guess I need to do that) and some C exceptions, and wanting to make a template for the morphed long Vicky dress, I decided this was something I needed to do -quick G. Yes, the folders are what I mean, although I'm sure there were 2 readme files (one was "readme402" - I remember that grin). And yes, the plugins are how Poser handles the export and import of OBJ/3DS/etc files. You really really don't want those left in the folder when you start to update. Good luck :) Paul

I'm going to do what you said--interesting that I got no readme. I went back to Larry's site and it did say I should get a readme--oh, well. Should I replace the plugins after I install? I'll copy them to another folder and hold them for now.

LoboUK ( ) posted Wed, 17 May 2000 at 8:05 AM

Oh hell yes.. replace them otherwise you'll never export the dress you want to re-map :) (Out of interest, I downloaded the ZIP from Larry's site and there are 2 readme files - right at the bottom of the zip file. Do you want me to send them to you?) Paul

Well, drat--wonder where the one I got came from? I linked to the download that Jeff stuck in a lower post--it linked directly to 'some' download--which seems to have worked fine. I did not dl the one from ghosteffects--I don't think. BTW--in this dl there was/is a folder with plugins--I just replaced my empty plugin folder with this one. I'm now assuming that I have what I need LOL. You don't know how much I appreciate your help. I've been really wary of loading these patches--I've watched other people have problems and I wasn't having any to speak of--until Vicky. After reading Chad's reply to Virus (think on the 'other' forum) about these (the Vicky clothes) were the first models, he thought, that had been based on the patched P4, I realized I had to install the patch. Glad I did and glad I asked some questions here--as always, the level of help is terrific. Diane B

Ok. I'm going to give this a try now too. I d/l the patch from Meta awhile back and had a lot of problems with trying to save .obj files to use in Bryce. I gave up and removed the patch. Now I see I'm going to have to go ahead and do it after all. I have to admit that I'm awfully nervous about this :-) Claire

Incidently, I don't understand why you have to delete the plugins, as otherwise you would just get the message about replacing them, and if you tell windows to do it it will. I assume this was some deal about Poser not letting them be replaced while it is running, like it will not let you delete an RSR, but otherwise I'm at a loss. I also wondered why they didn't set up the stuff in a proper zip file with all the folders in place, so WINZIP would automatically put everything in the right place, just like may people put up their Poser items, but maybe the plug-in replacement has something to do with that.

Claire, I installed mine this morning and it was really easy. Basically, all you have to do is copy each of the files to where you find the original, it will ask if you want to replace it, say yes--that's it. There are also some things that go in Runtime--geometry, libraries, plugins, and preferences, but those will be pretty self evident--in fact, I believe that they tell you-for instance 'put this in animals'--its the rattlesnake cr2 and rsr. Go for it G. I'm getting ready to post a couple more clothed Vickies and I had NO trouble at all this time. Worth doing it--plus it just takes a few minutes in actuality (I used the dl that Jeff linked in a few threads down). Diane B

Diane, I just finished installing it - and it worked! Yes, it was also easier than I thought...I think it was the bit about not attempting it (if you're faint at heart :-)that threw me off but it definitely works better than the Meta one did. I saved an .obj file with no problem at all. Now if someone would just do a tutorial on how to use the new Vicki maps I would be truly happy Claire

Do you mean the templates?--They seem to be about like the others--or at least the ones I've worked with--the dress, skirt and Tshirt. I'm wondering if you mean because of the sections that you can work with separately in Poser. My plan, if I want to have different textures, is to make more than one tex for the clothing. In other words, on the dress, make one that will cover the dress part I want to use, then one that may cover the turtle neck part, etc. Then select them differently in the materials lab. OR--is this not what you mean? With the dress template sort of slanted, that means you need to approach it a bit differently, but I didn't have any problem. The big problem is using the morphs which will stretch the skirts. In my above post, I did a texture that was enhanced by the stretch. When you morph 'shorter', it doesn't seem to make any difference as I shortened the skirt and the Tshirt. I am going to try and make a template/model for the long dress though so I can texture it exactly the way I want without worrying about stretching. Diane B

Diane, Yep, that's what I meant! You answered the question very well....a little light bulb just went off in my head. I understand it now and I think I was trying to make it more complicated than it really is. At least I hope so :-) Claire

rain ( ) posted Wed, 17 May 2000 at 9:08 PM

Diane, The lightbulb was correct :-) I understand the templates and how to do it. At least for the dress it worked so I assume it will for the rest of the outfits. I went and got the UVMapper program so I'm all set. My, I feel like I accomplished so much today. Claire

picnic ( ) posted Wed, 17 May 2000 at 9:35 PM

Terrific, Claire. Doesn't it feel good when that little light bulb goes off--and things come together? That's how I THOUGHT I felt yesterday and then couldn't get the models and templates to work in UV Mapper for the dress. However, now that I have the patch and the Vicki upgrade in place, I'm going to try again. Let's see some things as you get them done. Diane B
