Subject: Object "groups"

I have an object that I want to make posable; however, it only consists of one "group". Is there some way to "break it down" so that different parts of it have a different name? For example: A desk with two drawers (just an example). When brought up in UV mapper and "select by group", it only says "desk1", but I want it to say "Desk" and "drawer1" and "drawer2". Does that make sense?

Select the object and open the "Group Tool" in Poser.

Select the polygons that are in the section you want.

Then ... "Create New Prop"

The newprop will be in exactly the same position as the part of the object that it was created from.

Repeat this process for each indiviual part.

Now you will have a separate object for each part.

Clear as mud huh? ;=]

I have a few tuts that cover this in detail if you would like.

Just do a search in the Poser Forum for "geep".

I found the group edit tool very difficult with many props that I've created and imported, so I've used a different technique... Each part (or eventual group) that I want to identify, I assign to a different material in my modeling program. That information is carried over in the *.obj file into poser. Then you use the group edit tool to create new groups, but select the polys by the "add material" button. Then you don't have to do all of the selection using Poser's more limited selection options (in group edit).

You can also use UVmapper. Choose a map where you see the "obj" best. Mark the part of the mesh you want for another group and select "Tools" asign to "Group" type the name of the group repeat for others groups. save model and open it once more in UVmapper. Now you should have your obj parted in groups. If you need more help to this let me know sally

Thank you all! After I drop my son off at school, I'm going to try each of the ways you suggested. If all goes well, there may just be a new item in free stuff ;-) at some point... in the future.... when I finish it.... (hee, hee) Okay, I haven't finished my morning coffee...

The easiest way is as Krystalmoon says. Do it in uv mapper. If the various parts already have their own materials, you can simply 'select by material', then 'assign to group'. If not, you'll have to try the various mapping options to separate the parts. Box-mapping is the one to try first. Just remember, after you resave and import to poser, it still won't be posable. You have to make it posable. And that's a whole other topic. Just yell for help. mac
