Subject: Real braids.....?

Patricia ( ) posted Wed, 12 March 2003 at 10:31 PM · edited Mon, 23 December 2024 at 5:07 PM

I cannot find any modeled braids that are composed of 3 or more strands, like real braided hair, for example. I'm not a modeler, so I have no way of knowing whether such a thing is a modeler's nightmare, but it sure would be nice to have a braid that looked like a real braid for close-ups. Transmapped properly, it would be beautiful for all sorts of hairstyles......Anyone interested? :)

LOL! Gebe, I was thinking the same thing ;)

Y'know, it looks more real than any other braids that I've seen, but it still looks like it was (beautifully) assembled from a number of sort of 'v' shaped modules, rather than by 3 strand braiding. I don't own it because of that. And also because a friend has it and she's always looking for true braided hair, too....

Hrms...

I'll IM her and ask about the way it was modeled.

Aye, I've never really tried to model anything like natural braids. Most modelers create braids from deform spherical objects or cylinders I would guess. Doing it in the same fashion as true braids would be a difficult chore but not impossible. I'm guessing that the poly count would be higher as well.

All I can say is that I'm working on the conundrum as we speak. I'm not great at hair, but mayhaps I can get the modelling done, and someone else can do the texturing...

I tried making a full hair set, but ended up only being moderately satisfied with the braid, itself. Is this close to what you're looking for?

Yes! I'd wish for a little bit smoother curves and fatter strands (so you can't see between the strands) but that is IT ! Too cool...this is the first time I posted here and I got instant gratification ;)

Valandar, what proggy are you using. I use rhino. I was thinking that perhaps I could do something similar using multiple strands per hair segment. I don't have access to my machine right now, but will give it a try later. I was thinking perhaps "piping" a number of splines which are already in the proper shape and order. ...and piping each with slightly different diameters... oh, and without end caps :). By usings different diameters, I hope to cause some of the strands to intersect slightly which would close some of the gaps (hopefully all). It would be most similar to how DW creates his hair models. I've never done hair before either, but it will be a nice little challenge. I was playing around doing organics the other day and came up with a nice grass model which I placed in the FREE stuff section. Did a nice little ornamental tree too :)

I'm using Rhino. And that was meshed rather roughly. My problem is in making and transmapping the "skullcap" and "tuft" at the ends... he changes Patricia requested will be relatively simple enough.

LOL....Mine too---->(My problem is in making and transmapping the "skullcap" and "tuft" at the ends). I tried a hair model once and it came out like Vicki was balding! LOL! Just wisps of hair here and there..it was quite laughable heheh. The mesh itself was pretty full and thick, so I guess it was my transmapping that sucked to hell. :) I didn't use a skull cap either and that was another part of the problem, I guess.

Patricia ( ) posted Fri, 14 March 2003 at 6:31 PM

By all means, let's see a variety of them....even, maybe, a poseable one that can be added to other hair sets, if that's not asking too much. (I'm so thrilled to see a real braid that I may get overenthusiastic here! Just ignore me and do whatever is interesting for you to model ;)

This is one I started work on over a year ago and that I'm just now planning to come back to very soon. The mesh needs a little refining and of course I have to join it to a good skull cap. Then I'll either have to learn to make hair textures or find somebody to do it for me. I'd say it will be at least a month before you see this one available. I'm toying with the idea of making it a freebie. If it winds up in the store then I've decided that the price won't go over $10.
