file_51181.jpg

the file is 14 megs in size, contains all components needed to run in windows XP and Windows 98, hasn't been tested on any other OS so i don't know about the stability on other OS'es. No Tech Support will be avaible for this version, most common issues were addressed in the readme file. So any takers on hosting the file?

Thankyou for the responces on this, i've just finished uploading it and some images for those willing to host it, and I will be contacting those who are willing to host it via IM with a link to get it and the three images (the two here and thumbnail). Perhaps with multipul download areas for it it will help to break up the bandwidth usage. It was going to be sold for 10 dollars in the marketplace but here recently I have desided to give it away for free sense I will not be able to give out support for it, but i did try my best to answer the most common questions including install questions in the readmeNOW!!.txt file in the zip. I'm sure people will be able to give help to eachother with this one sense most questions will mostlikely be simple issues. ok off to send the IM's with the info to get the stuff. Thanks guys.

Sense I may not be able to continue the developement of the program I'm now thinking about giving out the source files for the program as well so that perhaps others can develope it and improve it as well. The only thing that i'd require is for my name to remain in the credits. I'm checking my schedule now to see if I'll have the time or not to continue but from the way things re going around here locally, and my business, I'm thinking im not going to have the time to continue the developement of it with the other projects that I have going on. -Arthur

This looks just like my very own program found here: MAT Pose Creator, versoin 4.0 But, since I will be taking the argument that free-stuff "knock-offs" of for-sale items has the potential to cause this site to lose revenue, I will continue this debate in the Merchants Forum. Thanks to all the people who mentioned the similarities between this program and mine. Oh, wait, it was only ONE person- Dodger. Thanks to all the people who mentioned the similarities between this program and the other free program. Oh, wait, that was only ONE person also- Dizze. I guess everyone else (especially the "OMG!... this looks AWESOME!" and the "Great idea" people) have never seen a program like this before... even though both my program and MAT Pose Edit have been available since November, 2001.

I'm sure Microsoft feels somewhat the same way about Star Office, Open Office, etc. Not to mention Adobe vs Gimp and many others. I know one Poser site that requests freestuff contributors not put up anything "too similar" to their marketplace items. I don't know if R'osity has a police one way or another. My feeling is that if someone wants to provide a free product, more power to them. Not everyone can afford to buy commercial products all the time. If the commercial product is clearly superior, then it will win out. What's the emphasis? Is Renderosity here to serve the interests of the merchants above those of the other members? Once you start protecting people against competition, free or commercial, there is no incentive for them to create something better. As they say, bankruptcy is to capitalism what hell is to Christianity. I think barring beople from providing free items because it might cut into someone's sales is a bad idea.

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Fri, 21 March 2003 at 6:30 PM

So how close or how far should you go from a commercial product when making free stuff?! I mean.. there are loads of free seamless textures for sale, and yet I put package after package in free stuff of exactely that. Why? Coz I think it's FUN to make seamless textures, but I don't consider it real "work" like when I'm making a model. So I won't charge for it. Caleb's idea was originally to make this on a commercial item. He changed his mind, for which I am gratefull. If the commercial MAT pose maker (not sure of it's real name) is better than this, it'll sell. If this is better, it won't. It's not like a model where you can say that this is clearly a copycat item. Noone has a copyright of the IDEA of MAT poses, and there are only so and so many ways a MAT pose editor can be made. Personally I think this one is brilliant coz it's made to resemble the usual Poser interface. I haven't tried the commercial one so I don't know if it does this too. If I made a tutorial on something and put that up for sale, should I then bash everyone who makes a free tutorial on that same issue?

lmckenzie: The GIMP started as a linux-only program -- it's only been compiled for Win32 and NT because it's open-source and was eventually inevitable. Star office is, if I'm not mistaken, derivative of WordStar which started as early as if not earlier than MS Word. That's not a comparison. Is Renderosity here to serve the interests of the merchants above those of the other members? Yes. Well, in a way anyway. Renderosity is a business and is here to make money. By hepling the merchants, Renderosity makes more money. I don't see what point there is to these arguments, really, though. Sorry. I was simply asking how much it's like JHoagland's excellent program, how it compares, and so on.

JHoagland ( ) posted Fri, 21 March 2003 at 7:08 PM

Noone has a copyright of the IDEA of MAT poses, No, no one has a copyright on the IDEA at all. However, and this is the point that is getting missed: one merchant is making a free-item that is very similar to another merchant's for-sale item. If I made a tutorial on something and put that up for sale, should I then bash everyone who makes a free tutorial on that same issue? Should you? That's up to you. It depends how seriously you take your Poser income. If this is a "hobby" and your tutorial brings in $10, then, bash if you want. But, when the incomes reaches the hundreds of dollars per month, then I would like to think that, you too, would protect your "investment". If the commercial MAT pose maker is better than this, it'll sell. And this argument is as old as the hills. People download stuff because it's FREE. Which would you rather have: StarOffice (free) or Microsoft Word ($250), assuming you know nothing about either product? If you said Word, for $250, I'm shocked. For a rough comparison: MAT Pose Edit (the free program that everyone talks about) has had 2,294 downloads since Feb 17, 2003. My for-sale program has not even had 1/10 that number of sales. Bad marketing on my part? The other program is "better"? If you say so, but I'm sticking to the "Free products are downloaded more, sometimes to the detriment of for-sale items" theory. there are loads of free seamless textures for sale, and yet I put package after package in free stuff of exactely that Ah, another old as the hills argument. Let me ask you this: did you base your free texture off of a product you saw in the Marketplace? And does your texture look very similar to the one in the Marketplace? On the other hand, I will admit that caleb68 seems to be talented at making programs (at making them for free). I would like to request that he make a version of Dark_Whsiper's "Vicky2 to Vicky 3 Texture Converter". Now, that would be sweet. Or, how about the "QuickConform" program. If he made a version of that for free, that would be cool also. --John

Don't you people read? Caleb didn't make the program with the intention of giving it away for free but with the intention of selling it. But things have come up and he can't support it so he doesn't feel it's right to charge for it without support..so he's giving it away rather than throw it away...

caleb68 ( ) posted Fri, 21 March 2003 at 7:28 PM

Dodger - accually the one you pointed out looks more like scourge's free one. totally different interfaces from mine. Mine was more set to resimble the poser interface for easier use, to help people from learning a new process all over kinda deal.

caleb68 ( ) posted Fri, 21 March 2003 at 7:31 PM

JHoagland - You did this once before. And the arguement was processed and proven that there was no copyright issue at hand. im not going to play this game with you again.

Farside ( ) posted Fri, 21 March 2003 at 8:28 PM

lol, people are arguing about this being a free "rip-off"? How come no one's made that argument about Daz Studio yet? It's going to be a free "rip-off" of Poser. How many people do you think will condemn Daz for it?

PeterWahoo ( ) posted Fri, 21 March 2003 at 8:32 PM

file_51184.jpg

Oh Geesh, John. Just give it up. You just give all of us more reasons not to ever do business with you. Look at this screenshot. ProMAT Builder's screen resembles Poser, not your Program. Now tell us, did you borrow from Poser's design when you made your own program?!

Jcleaver ( ) posted Fri, 21 March 2003 at 8:47 PM

John, you are right to a point about the comparison between StarOffice and MS Word. If one didn't know the difference, then one would probably go for StarOffice. However, when it becomes clear that they need the features of Word, they'll get Word. Sometimes, free versions lead one to look for better solutions that have the features one wants. That is what happened for me. I had a free version, then found one that had everything I needed that was for sale. You know which one I bought. I own your program, and am happy with it. But I don't begrudge caleb68 for his version. Is there something your version does that his doesn't? If so, you should point out the differences that show why your product is the way to go, instead of being paranoid. That is how you come across. I apologize if that isn't the case. I could be wrong as I haven't tried this program yet, but I can think of at least one feature your program has that his doesn't appear to have. Sell the differences.

sandoppe ( ) posted Fri, 21 March 2003 at 10:40 PM

Personally, I've used Star Office and would pay $250 for Word....because it works better for me! Windows runs more of my software than Linux Mandrake (in fact Linux Mandrake doesn't run anything I use on Windows), so while I enjoy playing with Linux Mandrake and will even purchase it to support their development efforts, I still prefer Windows because it runs the stuff I need to use for work. Bottom line: free is not always better...not always. So......if your product is more reliable, easier to use, etc., then people will continue to buy it. Also, "free" is often perceived as "not so good". Some people are wary of "free programs" and would prefer to pay for what they believe is a "proven product". I work with government programs. We offer some great services at no charge to employers because their taxes have already paid for them. But.....employers will often "purchase" the same service from someone who is charging a fee. Why? Not because the "fee based" product is better necessarily, but because the perception is that if you don't charge a fee, your services must not be good! I wouldn't worry about losing revenue over the long haul. In fact, if I were you, I'd download the free version and make a note of the features that are more outstanding in your product....them promote the hell out of it!

caleb68 ( ) posted Fri, 21 March 2003 at 10:48 PM

or add the features his doesn't have. the source is avaible as well now.

sandoppe ( ) posted Fri, 21 March 2003 at 11:01 PM

There you go! Good suggestion caleb! Free source code to boot! :)

lmckenzie ( ) posted Fri, 21 March 2003 at 11:35 PM

Well, to continue the analogy, I've used both Star Office and word. To me, the feel of Star is clunky. As a developer, I also appreciate the fact that on the whole, Microsoft's products are fairly well integrated. Learning a new automation model when 90% of the desktops I'm working with are going to be MS doesn't make a lot of sense at the moment. If I can afford it, I'm going with Word. If I can't afford it then Microsoft hasn't lost anything. I still cringe at the 400 bucks I shelled out for VB6, but after years of looking at free compilers and IDEs, I'd still pay for it. Are some people going to go with the free option regardless? Of course If the free product meets their needs, why not? Will a commercial product that doesn't meet their needs any better lose out? Probably so, it's called a free marketplace. Is a free marketplace preferable to one bound by tariffs, protectionism and boycotts? Even the Chinese Communists are reluctantly admitting that. Certainly Renderosity has an interest in the economic health of their vendors, but where do you draw the line? Once you start down the slippery slope of saying some things are forbidden because they step on someone else's toes, it can get very messy. Merchant X brings in a lot of money from their textures and some talented and generous new kid is making them just as good for free. Shut him down, he's stealing all of my business. How good do they have to be before they run afoul of the ruling economic interests? Do I have to cripple MAT Mangler 20003 to give it away? What if I sell it for the minimum price or 99 cents less than the competitor? JHoagland certainly hasn't failed at marketing his product. On the contrary, he's taken every opportunity to do so and taken some criticism for it from me among others, but hey' he's an aggressive salesman, I can admire that in a way. I just went and looked at his program. It seems to have more features than you can shake a stick and glowing reviews. For someone who created models or created a lot of MAT poses, it might be the perfect tool. For someone like me who creates one a week at most, I can't justify spending the bucks, even if there weren't a free alternative. I'd rather have a nice model or texture instead. Maybe it would sell twice as much at half the price, that's marketing and the market. If DAZ Studio delivers Poser 5 capabilities for free, people will get it instead of Poser. If it delivers the Poser 4.5 many wanted for free, people will get it. And, if it does well what Poser 5 does badly, people will buy it, even if the eventual cost is the same or a little more. The point is, in a free society, people should have choices. Now, Renderosity can (within the law), be as undemocratic as they want to be - their site, their rules. I know that they have economic interests to look out for and those are important to their survival. I think though that if you try to promote artistic freedom, and freedom of opinion, you should tread lightly here. Prohibiting someone from doing sharing the fruit of their intellectual endeavor is no different than limiting the art they can share. In both cases, it should be done only for the most serious reasons, and money should be the last of those. One final thought. The fact that Caleb's interface mimics Poser's is a clever "selling point." I would have done something entirely different and "improved," but for many users, I bet the familiarity will be a plus. I'm sure it's a fine program, but even if it didn't match the capabilities of the others, free and commercial, a lot of people might like it for that reason alone. Might as well start arguing about the artistic merits of Naked Vicky. Caleb, dude, check the spelling on your reflection options :-)
