I've done it, broke down and bought a DVD recorder, and it's all your faults for forcing me to buy all the cool things! Wonder if I could sue all the Poser stores for the price of the drive....hummmmmm lol Now to throw it in and see if it works. (man that r makes it look like dam instead of darn) Marque

What, there are merchants out there making yarn?

For the price of a DVD recorder I'd probably look at one of the new external USB hard drives (actually a little less). The media is still too just dang expensive for the DVD's. Just my 2 cents. The DVD burns are much slower, and burning 4.7 gigs is going to take awhile.

A copy of Suse Pro 8.0 from DVD to DVD, about 3 hours... Ascii

Gosh, I have had one of those for over a year (built into my computer) but I have NEVER used it, Once? I haven't even viewed a movie on my computer, because that is what my TV is for? What is it you guys are/what to copy? I am sorry, but I don't know what the advantage is over CD's writers, other then file sizes? For me, right now, it is the price of the disks (DVD'S)..........I have two daughters who will copy EVERYTHING, At my expense........so I haven't bought any of the DVD writer disks.......too costly for mistakes and ultimately the garbage can. LOL! Please shed some light on this.....I am very interested to know what I am missing? Genny

Steve, don't worry about getting burnt - if you buy the Sony DRU-500 model, which does ALL formats. That way you never land up with the wrong standard. Burn time: with 1x discs, about an hour - or a little more. With 2x discs, about 35 mins or so. And with 4x discs about 20 ms. Those discs cost more of course. I bought 10 on-a-spindle 2x write once (DVD-R) for the equivalent of about $1.75 each the other week, (about 1 quid) that's what I call cheap backup lol Considering that's 4,5 Gig for each disc.... It's worth every cent. :] Fish

Genny, DVD disks only cost 2-3 times more that cd's and their capacity is 6 times. So they're cheaper per Meg than cd's now. And it only gets cheaper as time passes. :] FIsh

Thanks, Fish..........maybe I should check into this some more. (: Genny

My main reason is to have everything on one dvd so I don't have to search through, I have a TON of stuff, just the Daz stuff alone will fill one DVD. So it is worth it to me just to not have stack of CD's to go through. Even labeled it's a pain. Also my daughter will be doing some tours for Real Estate agents that need to be DVD so she will buy me DVD disks one for one. Marque

I have have a dvd burner in my mac for over a year now and have been burning 4.4Gb data discs without any problems. The burning time is about one hour without verification and double that with verification. This is an early DVD-R drive and only a 1X speed and I just replaced it with a new 4X speed drive which should be four times faster. The only problem I have had so far is finding the 4x recordable discs. I just got some from the Apple store, but haven't burned any thing yet. There is a second speed problem and that is the write in and write out (indexing) after the data is burned which adds another 20 minutes or so to the total time. I don't know if it well take as long on the new 4x burner. Still it is much faster then CDs for the same amount of data even at 1X speed.

DVD Rs aren't that expensive if you look around. For example, Office Max had 25-paks for $19.99 (after rebate) all last week. I got the Sony DRU-500 not too long ago and am very happy with it. With its software you can use a RW dvd as a regular drive that you can copy to and delete from at will. So you don't have wait til you have 4 gigs of stuff to burn. Just copy it over as you get it. As an added plus, with other software, I can now make backups of my DVD movie collection. So when my daughter wants to take a movie to one of her pajama parties, I give her the copy. The original and its case stay with me -- safe from smudges, scratches, spills, and other such hazards one encounters at pajama parties.

If you're looking for good prices on DVD-R, check out www.meritline.com. I just bought fifty of their lowpriced DVD-R s for about 45.00 US. I burned about thirty dvds for various projects (from data storage to video conversions) and I only had one bad burn (my fault).
