Subject: Help with Importing OBJs into Poser 4!!!!!!

Jacqueline ( ) posted Tue, 25 March 2003 at 9:06 PM ยท edited Thu, 09 January 2025 at 1:25 PM

Hi Everyone, I am having a problem -I am importing OBJs exported from Cinema 4D 6 into Poser 4 and when in shaded mode in Poser parts of the models are not displaying. Everything renders just wonderfully -there is just a display problem that is irritating. Also they are complicated models so when I choose the "flip normals" command in the Poser import function it flips some of the normals and not others -once again just a display problem. Does anyone know what's up/what to do about this? Any and all help greatly appreciated. Jacqueline

I haven't used Cinema4D, but have run into similar problems with models made with trueSpace. In TS, the problem is minimized by triangulating the model inside TS and using an external converter to generate the OBJ from the native file.

evr, thanks for the help! Which software are you using to convert from TS to OBJ? We have Macs and PCs so maybe we could find something inexpensive that could do the trick, maybe taking 3DS files and converting them to Poser acceptable OBJ...

Hi, Im using v. 7 of Cinema. Never had this problem (after flipping normals, of course). Don't know if this help for v. 6: Have you tried unify normals (I think there's an option in the import panel) or align normals in C4D? Maybe some normals point "up" and some others "down". In cinema I turn off the "backface culling" option in my view menu, so the display doesn't "trick" me. also, I would check if there aren't duplicated polys, or vertex or something. The obj files exported from C4D are acceptable in Poser, I only use UVMapper as intermediate to keep the texture areas. I hope this help.

Sometimes what I do, is reverse the normals in UV mapper and all is well then. I export from Cinema as an object, then import into UV mapper, save object but check the box reverse the winding order, and all is good. Sharen

We got it straightened out! Someone suggested we use the Grouping Tool inside Poser and that worked great. We've also got UVMapper and are looking into that. We're still experimenting in C4D to resolve it there, but it's awkward to do there since it displays perfectly in C4D. Other objects from other 3d apps. also display funny in Poser, looks like the problem might be there somewhere...

Glad to hear you got it worked out. For the record, I use LithUnwrap to do the conversions, which was free but no longer seems to be available. I hear great things about UVMapper Pro, but have not used it yet.
