Subject: Insufficient Disk Space to Render at the Current Resolution?!

jaybutton ( ) posted Sun, 30 March 2003 at 1:16 PM · edited Tue, 30 July 2024 at 6:00 PM

I really should have paid closer attention when other people have had this problem, but there's so much to learn about Poser. Can anyone tell me how to overcome the "Insufficient Disk Space to Render at the Current Resolution" error? I have a pretty strong system (2.5 gig P4 with a gig of RAM running Windows XP) with plenty of free hard drive space (57 gigs unused), so I don' think that's the problem. Also, if the solution means changing system settings, please let me know the repercussions of that. Thanks! Jay

Hehe.. I'm envying you at the moment.. I "only" have a 1.4 Ghz 384 MB RAM and WinXP.

Only possible thing would be making the swap file VERY large. I have seen a large scene chew up massive amounts of RAM and swap space, so that might possibly help. Otherwise the easiest way of getting over that obstacle is to switch off bump maps. Generally works, they eat resourses for breakfast. Poser is NOT known for being efficient at handling memory lol. If not even that helps you need to trim down the size of your tex maps (especially if you have several Mill figures in your scene) for instance if they're 4000x4000 make them 2500x2500, uses about half the memory space for the texture. :] Fish

Oh incidentally, my system is just like yours, except with Win2K, and I also get those problems with large scenes.... even if it's a lot better now that it was with Win98. :] Fish

I get the error a lot right now. Especially after rendering several images at a high resolution. I either drop the resolution or restart poser and re render

  • exactly. Restart Poser. Even better, reboot the machine. Forgot that one :o) :] Fish

I wanted to thank queri for the answer for this problem, and promised I'd post the solution if she didn't beat me to it, the next time someone asked. I came up against this the first time I tried to render a larger screen size image in Poser 4.03 on my new box with xp.

Here's the scoop:

Poser 4
Poser can't render high resolution images. Error appears "Insufficient disk space to render"
After some intense investigation we believe we have a work around. It turns out that Windows NT 4, 2000 and Windows XP must be using some space for the pagefile.sys file on the same partition that Poser is installed, to render large images. The pagefile.sys is the virtual memory or temp space for Windows. An approximate minimum would 10 MB. This amount might have to be increased for more complex scenes and animations. The maximum should be 10 MB or greater.

To modify the Virtual Memory:
Windows NT 4 = Right Click my computer. Click the performance tab. Click change. Click the drive Poser is installed on. Enter 10 in the Initial size field. Enter 10 or more in the maximum size field. Click set. Click OK. Click OK. Click OK. You may have to restart the System.

Windows 2000 = Right click My computer. Select the Advanced tab. Click Performance option. Click Change. Select the drive Poser is installed on. Enter 10 in the Initial size field. Enter 10 or more in the maximum size field. Click set. Click OK. Click OK. Click OK. You may have to restart the System.

Windows XP = Click Start. Right Click My Computer in the menu. Select Properties. Select the Advanced tab. Click Settings, next to Performance. Select the advanced tab. Click Change. Select the drive Poser is installed on. Click the Custom size button. Enter 10 in the Initial size field. Enter 10 or more in the maximum size field. Click set. Click OK. Click OK. Click OK. You may have to restart the System.

Poser will now be able to render up to its maximum size of 4090 pixels x 4090 pixels @ any resolution

Wow! Thanks for the tips, off I go - :] Fish

An even easier remedy for those who are too timid to fiddle with the Windows Swap File: Install Poser on its own hard drive. You'll rarely get that message any more. When you do, defrag your hard drive. (This error message only encountered in Windows 2000 and Windows XP).

Thank you Droyd!!! And Peter, I got it most when I had Poser on it's own hard drive-- 120Gigs of it-- I was tearing out my hair-- it would render to a huge display window but not the same sized non-display window. Never had a problem from fiddling with the swap file-- yeah, it is an XP prob but compared to the ME problems I had, I'd never go back. Doesn't seem to happen in Poser 5. Emily

Thanks everyone for the help! I did as you suggested, Droyd, and everything seems to be working great. Thanks again! Jay PS Sorry it took awhile to get to you guys. I decided to render the image in Vue. At 4800 x 3600 pixels, it took a little while. ;)

Remember what I said: If you get the error after moving Poser to its own hard drive, you need to defrag the hard drive. Unfortunately, too many people never think about defragging. You do all that work wiht Poser, and your hard drive gets fragmented "big time." You might also want to clear out your temporary files, empty your recycled bin, and restart your computer. PS: I haven't fiddled with my swap file settings in years. And the experts I've talked to say that Windows XP, especially, should be perfectly capable of doing its own best job handling your swap file and memory allocation, etc.

Jay, I have the same computer system you do, and windows XP. It sounds like you've gotten some great advice on the swap files, etc., but I wanted to offer one quick and dirty trick to try first. When I get the error regarding not enough disk space to render, I go the folder: Document and Settings->(username)->Local Settings->Temp, and delete all the files. Then I'm able to continue rendering without having to shut down Poser or change the swap files, etc. Not sure if this will fix your problem, but its really easy and worth a try. Matt
