Subject: File Hosting Site

I'm new at Poser, but I've managed to create a few animations that I would like to share. I do not have my own web site, and I am a neophyte regarding setting up one. I don't want to set up a fancey web page, just a simple no-brainer one that requires little of my limited brain power, but one that is sufficient and "technically sophisticated" enough to allow people to access and download for viewing my animations (and that doesn't cost me $$$). I can post the animations in Binked avi and Quicktime formats, but the file sizes could, unfortunately range from less than 1 MB to over 10 mb each. I would like a site that can accomodate remote linking (a url posted in a Renderosity message, for instance), that would not frustrate those trying to access the files for download, that could accept 50 megs or more of animation files, and that wouldn't slap me for using the site for the sole purpose of providing web surfers acces to the files remotely. Homestead, Geocities, xoom, Anglefire, ???? What would you web experts recommend?

Intel Core I7 3090K 4.5 GhZ (overclocked) 12-meg cache CPU, 32 Gig DDR3 memory, GeoForce GTX680 2gig 256 Bit PCI Express 3.0 graphic card, 3 Western Difgital 7200 rpm 1 Tb SATA Hard Drives

For lots of web space and download traffic, plus remote linking, you'll probably need to pay for space. I use Communitech, and for $30 per month, I get 350Mb of space with about 8Gb of traffic per month.

if it is specifically for loading files. you also may wish to look into a FTP. many of the web space for sale out there has them.

I don't know about getting Webspace in the States, but I would offer you some help with your HTML problem.

A lot of places don't allow cross linking of files. They don't want to be repositories of MP3 files or porn mirror sites. Make sure you read the Terms of Service fully before you sign up with someone. I contacted customer service at my new hosting company to make sure that there wouldn't be any problems with my posting stuff to the Free Stuff area as that is technically cross-linking. (Files stored in one site, but accessed/downloaded from another site.) I wouldn't be surprised if Xoom has revamped their policies on cross-linking. They've been doing interesting things the last few months with people's sites. GeoCities has terminated a lot of accounts as well.

It sucks how they do this... but I understand they dont want to increase bandwith...it's all about money - plain and simple. an even cheaper alternative is that if you have a static connection (cable t1,dsl) you could run your own server with a Linux/unix OS. Or Run it with Microsoft Personal Web Server. In 98 its in control panel-> add remove programs -> Windows set up -> Internet tools. The bad thing about using PWS is that no matter what connection the end users have - the max transfer rate will be 56k.

The basic engine behind renderosity.com is available at www.easeforum.com, and there is a bondware application that includes much of the functionality of this site there (forums, file library, chat, news, etc...)
