It just happened. I opened up Bryce5, like I always do, went into my object presets which where just yesterday full of time consuming models I spent countless hours making. Suddenly, I realized about %95 of them were replaced with flat white boxes!!!! They're all gone!!!! WHY!!!!!!!!!!!

antevark ( ) posted Mon, 14 April 2003 at 6:21 PM

i've heard about this b4, never had it happen to me(maybe its cuz im on a mac). From what i remember..... sorry, they're gone.

Aldaron ( ) posted Mon, 14 April 2003 at 6:27 PM

Always a good idea to make backups of your library files. When they get kinda large Bryce tends to corrupt them. A beeter way to save models is to save each model in it's own scene file (.br5) then when you need it go to File/Merge then select the scene file that contains your model. When you save the model delete the ground plane or when you merge it you will have multiple ground planes.

Doublecrash ( ) posted Mon, 14 April 2003 at 6:35 PM

Shit, this is horrible! I will backup, I swear. Creepy happening. :( S.

brholte ( ) posted Mon, 14 April 2003 at 6:41 PM

okay, note to self..... remember to create backups, remember to create backups, remember to create backups, remember to create backups....... I better stick a note on my computer or I'll forget....(I'm still crying) :(

shadowdragonlord ( ) posted Mon, 14 April 2003 at 7:22 PM

It is a file-size limitation of Bryce 5, itself. Don't know about Bryce 4, I've never had a problem with it there. It JUST happened to me too, and my User.obp file is at 219 MB. It just won't load in, no matter how much RAM or speed I pile on! (shakes his head)

Doublecrash ( ) posted Mon, 14 April 2003 at 7:59 PM

Maybe it could be useful to create other libraries? There was a thread some time ago that explained that. So all the thumbnails won't get into the same folder. Someone remember the proceedings?

antevark ( ) posted Mon, 14 April 2003 at 8:02 PM

yeah, just go into your bryce home folder->presets->objects, then either create a folder now to make a new category in the general area, or go into users and duplicate that file to allow you to install into a new gategory inside bryce.

catlin_mc ( ) posted Mon, 14 April 2003 at 8:37 PM

Have you checked in the Bryce folder in your program files? I seem to remember this happening to someone else but when they looked in the user object file the were still there. If they are you could just make a back up of them from there and keep them safe for future reference. Catlin

brholte ( ) posted Mon, 14 April 2003 at 8:43 PM

not there catlin.... i fear they are gone forever. Let's all have a moment of silence..................................................................................................................................okay. back to work. Let this be a lesson to all who cherish their models and presets.

catlin_mc ( ) posted Mon, 14 April 2003 at 8:45 PM

Sorry. 8(

bikermouse ( ) posted Mon, 14 April 2003 at 11:37 PM

brholte, are you using XP? if so you might be able to recover them using system restore . . . ???

Zhann ( ) posted Tue, 15 April 2003 at 1:10 AM

brholte, happened to me with skies, now I keep duplicate folders, bikermouse might be right if you use XP, a system restore will bring them back, its worked for me a couple of times...sorry for your loss, I can sympathize...:[

Just for the hell of it.......try clicking on your white squares and see what happens. You might find that if anything comes up you can re-save it........

Sorry to hear this, But I'm glad I read this as it serves as a warning, I have loads of models saved, as I tend to create them individually to pull into a scene. So now I know I'll be more careful.

If you kept the .br file from images where you used the objects, they will be in there!

Tresamie: I never even thought of that. I was able to recover four of my models, thanks to your idea!!! You rock!

Might also try looking for some program called "Bryce Librarian". I still haven't got it setup though, but downloaded it. (I guess I haven't really filled up the library yet.) Supposedly it allows you to add more directories in the library. Which means you'd be less likely to hit the ceiling. The program needs some kind of visual basic code as well to run. You might need to download that too. Sorry about the loss of all the work, but look at this as an opportunity to start anew.

Wow! I'm glad it worked! I am new to Bryce, but was just reacting on logic...nice to know sometimes things turn out right! I'm so happy that you didn't lose everything. Tres

Paul, another question, will this only work with B4 or is it compatable with B5 too? Catlin

antevark ( ) posted Sat, 19 April 2003 at 1:56 PM

It wouldn't be bryce compatible at all. From what Paul's said, this only works with file heirochies(sp) in the desktop itself. It would be work on any Bryce because Bryce only reads the folders that are there. Do you understyand me, or do I have to fully wake up first?

catlin_mc ( ) posted Sat, 19 April 2003 at 3:34 PM

Yes antevark, waking up first usually helps...........8)

antevark ( ) posted Sat, 19 April 2003 at 8:37 PM

Wow, I can't believe how many spelling and grammar mistakes are in that paragraph :-| Okay, what Bryce Librarian does(from what Paul says) is what I'll show you how to do. There are 2 ways to organize your files. You know the arrow you click in the presets that asks you what category you want to go to, Users or Installed? To make another section there, look in the Bryce folder, then go into Presets-> Objects. Make a new folder. When you relaunch Bryce, it'll be there. To make another sub-category, look in the Bryce folder again, then go into Presets-> Objects -> User. Duplicate User.obp and name it something like User2.obp or something else. It has end in .obp. There will be a sub-category there, but it will have the large quantity of models that is in your other section. You'll have to delete them. I'm guessing that's what Librarian does, so it will work on any version of Bryce(as long as the paths are the same.)

antevark ( ) posted Sat, 19 April 2003 at 8:39 PM

And you can also edit the other presets the same way, just go into a different folder in the Presets directory.

TheBryster ( ) posted Sun, 20 April 2003 at 5:59 AM

You need to copy a presets/objects subfolder into the previous folder(go back one, paste, rename, copy/cut back to the place you got it from. Go into Bryce, delete whatever is in it and add your new stuff.............
