OK.... ~is about to pull her hiar out~ I have been rendering now a few months thought I had it somewhat down pat and all... but I have been working on a piece now for threeeeeeee days and about nuts. I have everything set up...nothing majorly high res{ my poor puter is so old she just about has a pull start string on her to get her going } I have the person..the nice lil wings I worked on ..the lil cute things and go to render....and ...........nothing. she wont move...wont do anything.. so I took the BG out.....nothing. when I cntrl+alt+delete to see if it is not responding it shows that it is ok...I shut down every non essential program...nothing...... How can I get this thing to render?? any tricks that will work?

One way is to render in layers. I start from the back and work forward. Save your whole scene as a Pz3, then delet or make invisable some of the stuff and render, save as tiff, bmp,PSD. Tiff and PSD save as alfa channels better for layering in your favorite paint program. Keep rendering the rest of your scene in layers using the original Pz3. Pay attention to your shadows. it may take a couple of tests to figure out what to use for each layer, but it will be easier on your computer. I do it a lot with my renders, I can also change the look of some of the layers to get the effect I want. Tashar 59

I've used Beryld's technique before and it works well. One thing I learned the hard way is to make sure you save your camera and light setups so you can get everything to align properly in each pass.

If you double click on your Pz3, everything should be the way you saved it. That includes lights and camera. Will not work right if you import Pz3.

also shut down (not restart) your comp after you save.that will free up the ram.

Please be more specific DarkE. (1) The figures won't move or (2) you get the memory warning when rendering or (3) you hit "render" and nothing happens?

I have the same basic thing happen to me as well. These are the steps i take first . Delete RSR in Geometries folders for any models i am useing in the scene. Try again to render if still not working i move on to removeing ALL bump maps. Some reason bump map channels can become bad and need to be resaved through a paint program. its just a matter of starting some were and working through a list of things to try. It could be your hard drive is in serrious need of defragging. It could be you need to run correct reference . Try rendering with out shadows . Your pz3 could have been corupted for some reason try going to a earlyer save one if you have it. Thats my basic list of places to start at and things to try. I have split a scene into a few parts like sugested and done it that way as well.

I know that anything that is High res makes my old puter pissy. I am still trying to fight with this thing ...I just dont understand it I defragged as suggested. I think I may have to do the dreaded formating. god I hope not. I will try the other steps as well. I am thinking that perhaps it is time to upgrade as much as I hate doing such things. { I am not the most comp literate person when it comes to hardware}:S

"I mean nothing not a word on the lil pop up window that shows the progress nothing. the lil window pops up but that is it. not text showing the lights being rendered nothing" What OS & memory? I've had the exact same thing on 98SE/256MB. Ruthlessly eliminating any other non-essential processes running other than the essentials seemed to fix it.

I used CacheRam for a while and didn't notice any real improvement. Indeed, I suspect it was making the system unstable - works better without it. Long term, your best solution is to upgrade to either Windows 2000 if you can find it or XP. Windows 98 just doesn't handle memory all that well. Using Windows 2000 with the same system, I never had problems rendering. A HD crash is the only reason I'm using 98 temporarily. You may have to upgrade your hardware but the change will be well worth it.
