THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Bryce still is kick-ass! See how I used the 3DWorld test on Bryce!

Rayraz ( ) posted Sat, 26 April 2003 at 2:58 PM · edited Thu, 21 November 2024 at 1:26 AM

In 3DWorld issue 38 there was a test for mid-range budget 3D software packages. There was a scene made in C4D R8 and then the testers got 45 minutes (excluding rendertime) to build the scene in another mid-range budget ($150-$750) package. Sadly Bryce was not included in the test because it was not a modelling or animation package, but a landscape-creating app. But I saw the images and thought that bryce could do better then the apps tested. And here's the result:

I think it beats the other testresults.

Rayraz ( ) posted Sat, 26 April 2003 at 3:34 PM

On the 3DWorld Disk as well as in the mag. I'll upload the other results.

You're right Bryce looks much better. Out of the other DVGARAGE 3DToolkit looks the best except for the orange.

I wonder who made the tests at 3DWorld. Surely Truepace and Cararra could have done better then the results in 3DWorld. Hash was actually quite good in terms of quality tools and ease of use. Only problem was it was very unstable and all the work was gone after one crash.

http://www.3dworldmag.com Is this the target image?

DigitalSteve ( ) posted Sat, 26 April 2003 at 5:15 PM

I read this article. 3D world themselves said it was purposley a very strict test. The main criteria was that the scene had to be created from scratch in 45 minutes, excluding render time. The purpose of the test was to see if 3d app's between 100 and 500 could compete with the big boys, producing profesional results to a deadline. I suspect people more famillier with these 'low end' apps would get better results in the allotted time. Having said that, although the 3dWorld crew claim to be 'experienced' with truespace, I'm supprised they managed to produce such a P.O.S render!

TMGraphics ( ) posted Sat, 26 April 2003 at 6:08 PM

Bryce does rule, but where is the C4D one? ;p

PJF ( ) posted Sat, 26 April 2003 at 6:39 PM

Try the 3D World magazine site link in my post above, TMGraphics. I'm assuming that's it.

How is it that the world still insists that Bryce is a landscape package? Are they dumb or what?

I look in on other renderosity groups from time to time and am a user of Carrara studio . I have bryce 3d from a magazine cover disc that I have used and enjoyed in the past. I check in here for info on bryce etc. The Carrara pic here is not very good at all. This does not represent carrara at all . I am sure everyone knows it is the persons talent to a large degree ,rather than the software that makes decent pics. I am an average Carrara studio user,so the pic I am posting is far from the best Carrara can do . It was fun doing as I havent modelled anything like this in ages.(I do architecural renderings.)I hope bryce has a future. P.S Took 45 minutes. Regards Mike Moir

And with another ten minutes to correct a few mistakes. My final pic. I will go back to just lurking here. Mike Moir

Man..... I like that Bryce render you have up over the others shown. It blows away the other test renders.... not just beats them. BLOWS THEM AWAY.... Lol and yes that napkins is killer. BRYCE RULES.....still. WooHoo. 8-) I am also surprised that these "modeling" programs ended up with such poor P.O.S results..... ~Swade~

Decided to see what I could do with the challenge so here's my 45 minutes of work and 3 hours of render on a 1.67 GHz. Modeled all with metaballs except for the napkin and "table".

Here's my Carrara version. I took a little longer than 45 mins. because of tweaking lighting and GI settings. All done in Carrara, mostly spline models and procedural textures, except for the background pic.

Andini ( ) posted Sun, 27 April 2003 at 8:28 AM

How are you all getting these orange textures? Isn't it supposed to be from scratch? However, I am looking for an orange texture for my own projects.

mmoir ( ) posted Sun, 27 April 2003 at 9:48 AM

Andini , My orange texture is a procedural shader done within carrara, the counter top was a stock Tmap that comes with carrara.I am sure Bryce has something similar in the DTE. I should have looked at the Target render before doing mine , as it is quite different from the target image. BTW nice images by all the postees(people who posted) Mike

Here's my orange texture, all procedural. I also used the noise, punch, scale and taper deformers on a sphere to model the shape. Patrick

Rayraz ( ) posted Sun, 27 April 2003 at 2:06 PM

My orange texture was a procdural too.

Ok Rayraz what are the numbers for your procedural orange texture.........I need to know????? The only orange peel texture I've used is the one in freebies but I'd love to know how to make my own. 8) Catlin
