It is a mention but the word "e-commerce" pops up 3 times - was I on Adobe's site or MetaCreations'? Dave

E commerce is turning into one of the largest Holy Grails of marketing. If you get the chance, read Michael Drummond's " Renegades of the Empire ". There is a facinating study of a project that Microsoft was conducting which was known as Chrome. It was an attempt to use Direct 3D technology to create a new form of "interactive browser on Steroids" as one of it's developers described it. It was eventually killed by internal politics and lukewarm 3rd party support, as it would have required 400mhz+ processors to function properly.

I think e-commerce is interesting and I think there is a future of some sort for 3d modelled, interactive product browsing - but Im not convinced it will ever amount to anything as interesting as what us common folk are creating with these powerful, affordable products. So considering all that's gone on and with the sort of uncertainty about the future of the products, I was a little alarmed (or maybe dismayed - or maybe even over-reacting certainly) to seeing the supposed new mother host bleating "e-commerce e-commerce". : ) Whew! - Dave

I hear ya, for sure. Maybe that is a way to draw the investor's. Myself, if I had a buck for every "wave of the future" I bought into, I could retire today. Question: If in a distant land, a long time ago, far, far away, you heard of a application That was primarily for the Graphic artist's called Photoshop, would you have bought into it at the time? I think Metacreations had a good intent in the beginning by trying to provide affordable tools for the Graphic Artist. However, to this day, I get the impression that the land sharks moved in on Metacreations and tried to capitalize as much as they could off of the company.IMOH. PhotoShop is the industry standard, BUT is also used by Graphic Artists everywhere. So who know's what the future may hold?

I believe we need to be heard by Adobe now, before they solidify their "e-commerce" solution for Carrara. I didn't find any place to directly contact someone in the know, and they probably wouldn't reply because of their "we don't comment on unreleased software" policy, but I did go to their support section where they ask for suggestions for new features or fixes for their products. They don't list Carrara but there's a space for "Other". I don't expect a reply of any kind, but maybe if enough of us contact them in this way and point them in the direction of these forums, maybe they will make some kind of announcement to give us a clue.

e-comm may be the holy grail. But in the end holy grails are nothing more than 2000 year old bent and scratched up lead cups. My worry is that Carrara becomes nothing more than a 'plugin' to Canoma 2; which in itself becomes nothing more than a tool for taking snapshots of product inventory. With Carrara's renderer and some of it's shader added in. Maybe one of the modellers stripped down for correcting flaws in the canoma prop of the latest Old Navy T-Shirt...

I hope not. But myself I am getting tired of Adobe and the way they have a new upgrade for every little whistle and or bell. Photoshop 5.0 was released and only a little while longer 5.5 was released, now I understand Beta is beginning on 6.0. Make it a $20 upgrade and I'll be happy. If push come to shove I'll drop Carrera from my list of tools and opt for a different 3D app.

I agree with you spanfarkle. The upgrade thing is one big mess and many times a waste of money for the amount of change one is paying for, especially if the next version only fix features that were supposed to have worked in the previous version. I sitll use Photoshop 5.2 and I am still using Lightwave 5.0. I will buy Lightwave 6.0 eventually but I have no need for it at the moment. I am still using 3D Studio Max r2.5 because I have no need for r3. The point that I am trying to make is "If it aint broke, Don't try to fix it!" All of this upgraded is for the most part unneccesary when you have intimate knowledge of the tool you are currently working with and in many cases, I have found cheap tools and plugs to fix any problems or shortcuts that I may need so try not to fall victim to the version scheme of business.
