Subject: Why the hell can't I open Poser character files?

capncrunch ( ) posted Tue, 06 June 2000 at 11:39 PM · edited Wed, 04 December 2024 at 7:45 PM

OK, I download the files. I put them in the right folders. Then what do I do? How do I open them? I've tried everything I can think of including every import on the menu. Can someone tell me how to open these files? Also, are there any cool marine figures anyone has that I can use? Im on a Mac.

You mentioned in the PM that you had placed them in the New Figures folder. Can you find and open that from the Poser interface? (the drawer handle on the right)

capncrunch ( ) posted Tue, 06 June 2000 at 11:51 PM

Yeah, I get to the folder, and nothing is in it

Nance ( ) posted Tue, 06 June 2000 at 11:56 PM

you may have a corrupt, or misplaced .rsr. The one you placed in that folder may have been the type that goes in the geometry folder. To find out, rename the .rsr to hide it from Poser. Then from the Poser GUI, open the library drawer, change to another folder and then back again to update the display. If the .cr2 is actually in that folder, then you will see a thumbnail of the "Grey Shrugging Guy" with the cr2's filename. Click this and tell me what happens.

capncrunch ( ) posted Wed, 07 June 2000 at 12:01 AM

nothin

Nance ( ) posted Wed, 07 June 2000 at 12:09 AM

If you know the file is in there without an .rsr but you still get no grey shrugging guy, either your file paths are duplicated or filenames are messed up (you cannot move most of the file structure from the factory defaults and don't know about a Mac, but on a PC you cannot change Poser's filename extensions). Can you see and open any of the default characters that came with Poser?

capncrunch ( ) posted Wed, 07 June 2000 at 12:11 AM

Im gonna try to put it in a folder that already has characters in it

Nance ( ) posted Wed, 07 June 2000 at 12:15 AM

Good Idea. Poser also will not recognise files more than one directory past the main libray catagory. i.e. it would not see a cr2 file in: ~/libraries/characters/new figures/one2manyfolders/lost.cr2

capncrunch ( ) posted Wed, 07 June 2000 at 12:19 AM

Didn't work, have any last ideas?

Nance ( ) posted Wed, 07 June 2000 at 12:26 AM

Are you saying you put it in a folder that also contains characters that you CAN open, and it still did not show up in the library? That cannot be! Did you change library catagories and change back to refresh the display? If so, I would try try temporarily removing one of the file sets for a character that you can open to see if it disappears from the library display. Do this to confirm the libray file you are moving things around in is actually the one Poser is using. Sounds like you could have two duplicate versions installed??

capncrunch ( ) posted Wed, 07 June 2000 at 12:30 AM

It dissapeared, so i dont have duplicate files

Nance ( ) posted Wed, 07 June 2000 at 12:37 AM

I just created a blank text file and named it "test.cr2" and placed it in: "/characters/New Figures/" and it shows up in the library display -- so it has nothing to do with corrupted files. It has to be something screwy with the file names. Do they actually end with ".cr2"?

Nance ( ) posted Wed, 07 June 2000 at 12:39 AM

Oh yeah, is this a Demo version?

capncrunch ( ) posted Wed, 07 June 2000 at 12:40 AM

Full version, and they do end in cr2

capncrunch ( ) posted Wed, 07 June 2000 at 12:43 AM

i tried the same thing, i got nothing its late, and im tired, i don't think we're gona be able to figure this out soon, thanx for helping though, and if you have an idea, post it. Thanks a lot, Capn Crunch

Oh yeah, just remembered that there is some kind of app in the Free Stuff/Utilities section for converting some PC files to Mac. May be that's what you're missing.

otaku ( ) posted Wed, 07 June 2000 at 1:00 AM

If your on a mac have converted the files to mac format? I've forgotten to convert files before and I've noticed that they won't show up on a mac if they're still in the PC format. Try running the files through the macconverter program before placing them in the runtime folders. If you don't have macconverter it's available in the utilities section of the funstuff area.

Don ( ) posted Wed, 07 June 2000 at 2:43 AM
  1. Be sure you don't have 2 sets of libraries and that The Library in in your Poser4 app folder. 2. Get and use the Mac Converter. Easy and it works very well. 3. Run Norton Utilities on HD with Poser. 4. Reinstall Poser4. (Save out added stuff to Libraries and Geometires.) Is your prob with P4.0 or the update? Try from 1 to 4. After each step, try again to open P4 cr2 file.

Capn, Couple of things. As a Mac user, you do not need the rsr files. They're a Windows-only necessity. Delete them. Mac's can produce thumbnails by reproducing the figure in the workspace. If you're not doing it already, you MUST convert downloaded cr2 files to the Mac format with MacConverter. As otaku says, it's available in the "Freestuff" section and it's an easy, drag-and-drop utility. You'll know the cr2 files that you need to convert by their icons: they're "text file" icons. Only cr2's that have Poser icons will show up in your library once there loaded into Runtime/libraries/characters; and MacConverter will change those text icons to Poser icons. (Actually it changes "type" and "creator" codes, but the icon switch let's you know that it's been done.) Good luck...

Mark, Otaku, and Don sound as though they've hit the nail on the head. This definately sounds as though you need to convert the PC-based CR2 files to MAC-based CR2's. Paul

melanie ( ) posted Wed, 07 June 2000 at 8:49 AM

I didn't notice what file type you're installing. Are they CR2's/RSR's or PZ3's. That would make a difference as to where you put them. If they're PZ3's, must put them into your Poser 4 directory and open them from teh file menu. Melanie

Use MartinC's MacConverter and you should be set. It is the greatest thing around for Mac users in Poser.
