I've been using Aldarons tree settings and created this. It's been inspired by ocddoug's work. Made from one simple sun-only render, an ambient occlusionmap, a distance-mask and a mask for the tree and leaves. A little compositing in PSP and this is the result. I'm quite fond of how it looks now.

3 trees in there? Interesting.

Pass no temptation lightly by, for one never knows when it may pass again!

This is more than interesting. I knew I did the right thing when I downloaded Aldaron's settings... This has to go in your gallery IMO, Rayraz, it's too cool.

Excellent job Rayraz - I really like alien trees and this is a mighty fine one.

Very interesting tree, glad people are finding a use for that accident. :)

very cool. What is an ambient occlusionmap?

Rayraz ( ) posted Sat, 24 May 2003 at 2:02 AM

Thanx for the positice reactions. I really appreciate it. Doublecrash; I'll post it in my gallery. Hepcatbrandon; An ambient occlusionmap is a render made with a pure white diffusetexture on the object, no specularity and zero ambience. Then you make a lightdome to simulate the light coming from all directions and you render. This way you get a render that determines where the light gets blocked out by shadows from other parts of the object. It's a simple GI render. In professional software the result of this render is a shadowmap for the GI effect. The advantage of making such a map is that you can change the look of your GI effect fast and acurate. In bryce it's just a greyscale render of the object in GI wich you can combine with the non-GI render in PSP or Photoshop. This saves renderingtime and allows for fast and tweakable GI effect.

The exam was difficult but I think it went okay. I took an evening off to make this image. Now I only have to do physics on monday. After that I'm finally free. Off to study again. bye!
