Subject: a question for the masses

What would you say, up to this moment, is your most defining photograph. If you can, post it and tell us why... I think this could be either your personal favorite shot or a shot that you feel says the most of what you are trying to say with your work.... Sorry didn't meant to conjure up a great philosophical debate, just curious. Jack ps, now that I have asked this question, I have to figure mine out...duh!...

A very good question...one I've never thought about. This is going to take some thought...

Impossible question to answer. Requires more of a qualifier. I have shots that I like because they portray a particular element of something, for example: human natures such as love, giving, tenderness, anger, etc.. Then there are those shots I like for the technical aspects, such as: light, contrast, color, reflection, motion, etc... Then we get into nature, such as: landscapes, water, clouds, sky, trees, grass, etc... I guess you can see what I mean. I like your idea though, I just think you would need to qualify the shot with one of the above categories. Sounds kind of like the same idea as the monthly challenge to me.

I could never answer that question, because I really don't know the answer.... I have far too many images that have a lot of personal meaning.... ! What am I trying to say with my work that a single image can convey?.... I like the question, but it's far too difficult to answer...I think you would have to look at a person body of work as a whole not a single image to get the answer...

I am, therefore I create.......

a quick scan.... disregard grunge and crud... I'd say this would be mine. Reason being, it's a printing technique (darkroom), that as far as I (or Fred, or my old teachers) could surmise, I actually invented. The only name I can offer for it is "Ryanization", as its neither solarization/sabatier, bas relief, or embossing. Probably my most enjoyable print ever, even more than the multiple enlarger prints. Not the most engaging photo or anything, it was just a personal triumph. I only did this with two different negatives... maybe I try again next semester, see if I can impress my teachers... lol.

Just look up to the forum banner. That one and "The Ben" are my favorites. You can see them both on my website [www.zhounder.com] in the Places Gallery. Magick Michael

Nnngh.. so many hard questions!!! sigh As regards actual photo's, it's pretty hard for me coz I haven't got that many good ordinary pictures... I guess it would probably be the explosion one I posted a while back - mainly coz the explosion happened about 15 seconds early and not many people got a shot of it..... I've even seen one in a local publication that wasn't as good as mine :) If you mean manipulated, it's a hard decision between my 'Doorway' pic with the door in the sea or my 'Strange Place' with the hay bales in among the the posts under a bridge. Saying that, none of this stuff comes close (imo) to the work I've been doing lately. Just a shame that a minority in Rosity have peed me off so much that I'm not posting my 2D stuff here anymore, and I've had very little time for photography.... sigh (",)

Jack my most defining picture is always in my camera, you know that beut of a shot that is never quite as it seemed when you pushed the shutter.LOL I suppose I have one shot that has done extremely well in exhibitions around the UK and has got me know as youre the guy that shot Cello Girl Taken on 1000 asa slide film and then 25% of the original copied up onto 100 asa film to give it a soft grainy feel. Even now 5 years later, after a little bit of rework in Photoshop its still getting acceptances in exhibitions. **:0 )**

thanks boys and girls, didn't mean to stump the band, it is a hard question to answer. I myself am still not sure how to answer it. Jack
