THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Bryce withdrawn from Europe?

BazC ( ) posted Tue, 27 May 2003 at 6:09 PM · edited Sat, 23 November 2024 at 8:41 PM

I posted a couple of days ago because I was having difficulty finding a copy of Bryce in the UK, well now I find that the Corel Store (Europe) doesn't even list it! I really don't know what this means because it's still available in the US, and rediculously cheaply too! So does anyone know of a store in the US which will sell to the UK? Baz

kromekat ( ) posted Tue, 27 May 2003 at 6:41 PM

Funnily enough - I was looking at only the same thing yesterday Baz - I was thinking of buying another copy of 5 at it's cut down $79 price tag for a member of my family, and so also enquired on the europe site, only to find it wasn't even in their store! :/ I emailed them, and as yet have had no reply. Maybe someone in the US would take delivery for it, and then post out to the UK?

I'd be happy to do that for any of you that need it done :) Just message me if you'd like to work something like that out :)

Dash101 ( ) posted Tue, 27 May 2003 at 9:46 PM

Yes... This news is somewhat troubling.. I live in Ottawa. Which also happens to be Corels flag-ship city. They're always in the news about something and its never generally good. Unfortunetly, Corel has all but abandoned the Bryce software. They are not interested in marketing it anymore and are phasing it out of its line of products... Oh well...

MadDog31 ( ) posted Tue, 27 May 2003 at 10:41 PM

Dash101 is this credible evidence that it is being phased out or is it truly rumor? MD

EricofSD ( ) posted Tue, 27 May 2003 at 11:05 PM

I doubt its a rumor. Corel didn't do much with it after they got it.

runwolf13 ( ) posted Tue, 27 May 2003 at 11:25 PM

Clearly it is no longer supported and no longer being developed. That's been confirmed by Corel right here on this forum. Actually phasing it out is the next logical step. The $79 price tag is a clear the shelves kinda deal. Probably be dropping a couple more times till the shelves are empty, then bye bye.

Erlik ( ) posted Wed, 28 May 2003 at 2:40 AM

Hm, maybe it's time then for somebody else to pick it up?

squeeka - that's very nice of you - I may take you up o that offer! :) Yes, Corel are definitely abandoning Bryce - they should never have taken it on in the first place, my feeling was at the time that they didn't have the vision to develop it as it should have been. I started a thread some weeks back about what people would like to see in a potential Bryce 6, and Doc Mojo of Pandromeda/Mojo World software was monitoring the incoming requests and ideas in the hope that he might be able to purchase it to develop it's true potential. I am not sure that he was financially able, but if Corel are simply dropping it, then I would think any price they get would be a bonus anyway! - but who know's, they may have already passed the ball on... we can only hope !

kromekat ( ) posted Wed, 28 May 2003 at 5:45 AM

..I'd hate to see it die off as an ongoing development though, as it has too large a devoted fanbase, and is way too good an app, even if it were twice it's original price to just fade away!

Hiya Kromekat! Thanks for the offer Squeeka but I have friends in the US so no problem there! Let's hope Bryce carries on somewhere, E-on software seemed interested but they'd probably merge it with Vue :o(

catlin_mc ( ) posted Wed, 28 May 2003 at 11:50 AM

I wish Corel would just bugger off and die. Excuse my language folks but this whole situation with Corel and Bryce makes me see red. I vote that we all email the board of directors at Corel (and I mean all the directors) and advise them to give Bryce to someone who cares about it, like Doc Mojo. Then again we could all send IM's to Doc Mojo and ask him what he's doing about it or if he's given up on the idea of getting hold of Bryce. Catlin

Maybe we should try and convince Maxon (makers of Cinema 4D) to take it on - many people, myself included, seem to have made the transition from Bryce to Cinema as the next step, which I belive is down to them both having interfaces that make people dive in and get wet pretty quickly, although vastly different in look. It would also be of great use to Cinema users if they could access bryce as a plugin or standalone with appropriate import filters to bring in landscapes etc. just an idealistic thought! ;)

What can I say? I love some of the corel products but I hate the kind of suicidal management they have. Thomas

cambert ( ) posted Wed, 28 May 2003 at 2:31 PM

Baz, amazon.co.uk are still selling the Bryce 5 upgrade for 51, if you already have an older version, or can buy one from somewhere like eBay. They're listing the full version as unobtainable though. I got my copy from them a few months ago at the 51 price, down from 95. Good luck.

BazC ( ) posted Wed, 28 May 2003 at 2:54 PM

Thanks Cambert, Amazon was the first place I looked and I don't have an older version. It's frustrating cos I've been planning to get Bryce for months, just for once I exercised self control and waited till the money was spare and didn't just put it on the credit card. That'll teach me to be frugal! :o( - Baz

Corel had visions with their old boss. Yet is only leaded by a group of numbercrunchers. They have no real vision for Painter, no real vision for Draw, no real vision for Ventura, no real vision for Wordperfect. No real vision for anything. That is their problem actually. If there is no wonder around, I think they will fade away in 2, maybe 3 years. That is my option and the problem with it for me, I'm sure I'm right with it. Thomas

Incarnadine ( ) posted Wed, 28 May 2003 at 3:59 PM

I have always loved PhotoPaint and CorelDraw. They have been staples on my various machines since i was buying machines. I love Bryce too, since 2!

tuttle ( ) posted Wed, 28 May 2003 at 4:47 PM

You'll usually find a Bryce 5 on ebay, but the only one there at the moment (boxed, new) is 61 with 6 days to go, which makes me think it'll end up around 120 or maybe more.

tuttle ( ) posted Wed, 28 May 2003 at 4:49 PM

...Or you could just buy the Bryce 3D from ebay currently (15, no bids) and pay 51 from Amazon for the upgrade...

skydiver ( ) posted Wed, 28 May 2003 at 5:48 PM

"and advise them to give Bryce to someone who cares about it, like Doc Mojo" Catlin" I agree Catlin, I suspect that we will find out that Corel has indeed found a buyer for Bryce. If this where the case, the buyer may have wanted all existing inventories to be depleted. The new owner would then have no competition from leftover stock and have a larger customer base that they could offer the 'new and enhanced version' to. Of course this "new" version may well wind up being a mix of Bryce and another program that is already successful on the market and when that program would be ready for the market would be a wild guess. Of course, all that I have said above is nothing more than conjecture. skydiver

AgentSmith ( ) posted Wed, 28 May 2003 at 6:59 PM

It could also be a combination of Corel selling everything they can right before they are bought out...time will tell.

weird...bryce is on the front web page at www.corel.com

Jacksmyname ( ) posted Thu, 29 May 2003 at 8:22 AM

A few weeks ago I bought the new Painter 8. I thought for sure that 7 would be the last version from Corel. While there are some things Corel changed which made no sense, it's a great program. For me, the new interface is a big improvement. And they've recently released the new Word Perfect Office, which looks pretty good. And yet, no future for Bryce. Also doesn't make sense.

DFT ( ) posted Thu, 29 May 2003 at 8:29 AM

What Corel is really up to will not be known until they do it. After checking there site, www.corel.com I noticed that they seem to getting rid of the KPT line as well!!

On this link there's still 'buy bryce from corel in the UK'-link. It's 99 though, and I didn't check to see if the buy-link works.
