THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Bryce's Death Knell?

Check it out--Corel has lowered the official price of Bryce to $79. My guess is that this means that Corel is giving up on Bryce. This is not just a sale--they've removed it from retail channels, and they stopped development of Bryce many months ago. Perhaps, after they get a pulse of sales at this fire-sale price, they'll sell it us at Pandromeda and we can revive it. Makes me a little sad to see it going down like this... :-( -Mo

Hi Doc! Yeah, it has been discussed in a couple of previous threads this week. In the UK, we can't seem to buy it at all via Corel Europe. I was speculating previously that, given their apparent abandonment of it as a product and development, surely they would be happy to hand it over to someone else at any reasonable fee they could get right now!? I'd be very happy to see it in the hands of a more creative development team (like yourselves!) Have you enquired about a price from Corel? Lets say it was going for $1M (although as above, I bet they'd sell for less now) Let's also say that you were able to throw $501,000 at it as a company.. What about if to raise the remaining $499,000, you devised a share/development system, where interested parties could buy shares (as designated by you/the lawyers) to help purchase it!? That way, 'we' could not only ensure the future of one of our favourite apps, but also have a vested interest in it as a going concern!? the figures are hypathetical of course, but it's an idea!?

Doc I hope and pray it gets in your hands,Just remember I would love to help out in any way I can towards Bryce or Mojoworld...

There was some speculation that E-on was going to buy it...perhaps they knew the demise and are just cashing in and trying to get the Bryce folks over to Vue--- Hopefully a deal with you, Doc, can be accomplished. Good luck---Bryce needs to move back home :)

"When the rain beats against my window pane, I'll dream of summer days again and think of..." Bryce. - was that peter and gordon or chad and jeremy? (I never could keep those guys straight.)

I'm still tucking money into that account just in case. If it comes to shares, I want some.

Pass no temptation lightly by, for one never knows when it may pass again!

Corel took their pound of flesh out of Bryce when they acquired it. Now they try and toss the bones into a corner. Hopefully Bryce will be still around in some form or other when the likes or Corel have red-inked themselves out of existance.

DAM3D ( ) posted Thu, 29 May 2003 at 4:41 PM

Uhhh, folks. I went to that link and it just shows Bryce for sale for $80, it doesn't say anything like.."we are dropping the price to get rid of it, and won't be developing it any further". They are still selling support packages and training services for the program, I do not see any evidence that supports the theory that Corel is going to stop making Bryce. The economy sucks, and I bet Corel is feeling the pain just as everyone else does at the moment. This thread is a rumor starter, and nothing more.

Well, lets see, just about eveyone here (Bryce forum) has contacted Corel at one point or another asking for info on Bryce's future development with NO reply, they aren't offering any more updates, they don't answer support questions (I called Corel on the phone), they don't visit the forum or galleries for Bryce, ANYWHERE, they do not take an active role with Bryce's users (unlike e-on, where they post user images, have contests, and visit the Vue forum regularly), so yeah, we think, and Doc's probably correct, that Corel is dumping Bryce by the wayside....

As I said, you have no facts Zhann. ZERO FACTS. NONE. NADA. Just because Corel has a crappy support team and they are not responsive to questions regarding the future of thier software doesn't mean they are folding. If they are, fine, but all I am saying is, they haven't announced anything to the public yet, and until they do, I for one, am not going to even speculate about it. And by the way, If they announced today that they were stopping production on Bryce, I would still buy it, even if I knew they wouldn't be around to support it.

as far as support, there is more here and the yahoo bryce list than Corel could ever think about providing...plus, buy susan Kitchen's tome for the complete deal.

{There is no proof or facts in a post in a forum. facts come from the source Kromekat. } That's right - and the press release that was linked to here previously was about Corel's situation and future plans. I don't remeber the link, but I am sure someone can dig it up for your benefit if they can be bothered. You don't need to be a brain surgeon to realise that Corel didn't give much effort to Bryce in the first place, and they certainly havent done anything since to suggest any interest whatsoever, so if their financial future is in question (which it is) they will obviously cease speding any 'further' time on it. This can only be a good thing, as it wll hopefully bring the app up for sale, and place it in the hands of a more creative team, but if not, oh well, it still works fine as it is.

Weezer, we do have a few credible inside information sources. Conan Hunter (Bryce's last Product Manager) has assured me and others that Corel stopped development of Bryce some time ago. Other contacts I and others have Corel confirm this. Also, the newsletters that Corel sends its stockholders give extensive information about Corel's products and future plans. Nary a mention of "Bryce" for many months now. That is the most telling of all. Finally, Corel has recently been acquired by a venture capital firm. The new owners will require a new plan to save Corel. You know, good old "corporate restructuring." Bryce is clearly not yet part of that plan. "We'll see." -Mo

I definitely hope you and/or pandromeda can buy bryce one day doc. It's good to see you've still got interest in bryce.

Well, if Doc ever gets custody of his wayward child again... I suppose that would be a good thing. Hopefully it could be optimized and more flexible. Perhaps even add a bit of coding to take advantage of certain graphics cards for those who have them. In addition to that... Perhaps work in a deal to financially assist with further development of a freeware modeling program or two and have a version of those made available in the software bundle. (Just something to fill in the gaps to make stuff that metaballs and booleans aren't the best to use for.) The brief bit of info on those could be put in the manual where Bryce's import capabilities are explained. I bet people would like that. ;) Finally, get Susan Kitchens involved in the next release and its beta testing, etc. That way it'll have a real manual. It seems like Corel should have done something like that, but instead decided to print their book with all the gaps in explaining things.

Heh heh. You don't want much, do you, Paul? ;^) Susan is a good friend of mine, so maybe we could lure her back to the Dark Side... ;-)

Hey Doc, good to hear from you again and I do hope that this time when you approach Corel they are more forthcoming. To Weezerhopw, I wrote to Conan Hunter on a couple of occassions before I got a response and he told me plainly that Corel were not going to develope Bryce and that because of financial difficulties it was being dropped. Believe it. None of us here want to see the end of Bryce and as far as I can tell the only person/company who has a realistic interest in furthering Bryce is Doc Mojo of Pandromeda fame. As far as what we all want Doc, you've seen the wish lists that we've posted and all we want is........ EVERYTHING!! Just hope you can give us some of it. Cheers Catlin

Doc, If you think it will do any good you can borrow Darth Mouse for when you talk to Susan - Last time I heard from him though, he was drinking Black and Whites with a bunch of elephants in a tavern in some video game about vampires, telling kangaroo jokes and generally making a pest of himself. (so much for enlightenment.) O.K. so Corel or their venture capital partners won't take 1.5 + futures; offer them 1.4 + futures; after a time if they don't take that offer them 1.3. cheers, - TJ
