Subject: I am OUTRAGED!! Corel to discontinue Bryce 5 for Mac development!

Corel axes Bryce for Mac development
By Dennis Sellers MacCentral

Corel is discontinuing the development of Bryce for the Mac. Bryce 5 is software for creating 3D landscapes and animations.

"At Corel we continually monitor the sales performances of our products to ensure we capitalize on market trends and opportunities," Meredith Dundas, Corel's communications manager, told MacCentral. "Through our research we have found that sales for Corel Bryce 5 are strongest with Windows customers, particularly at retail. As a result we have chosen to focus our efforts on Bryce 5 for Windows."

Corel will continue to support Bryce 5 for Mac with customer and technical support. You can still order licenses for Bryce 5 for Mac through the Corel Inside Sales department by calling 1-877-OK-COREL (1-877-652-6735).

There are no plans to cancel any other Mac compatible Corel products, Dundas said.

"We continue to support the Mac platform with our award-winning graphics products including the recently released Corel Painter 8, CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 11, Corel KPT Collection and Corel KnockOut 2," she said.

I was looking forward to Bryce 6 for Mac someday but this bombshell news shocked me. Corel has not marketing Bryce aggressively enough! That's why the sales are down.

Damn Corel! A Pox on Corel!

Agreed. I use CorelDRAW for Mac OS X, and will now be switching to Freehand or something similar (not the loathesome Illustrator), instead of purchasing Corel products. Granted, I tried Vue and absolutely hate the interface. ::sigh::

Guys if you peruse some of the posts in this forum you will see that Bryce 6 for Windows ain't gonna happen either. LB

I agree ....Painter 8 was on my list ..no more..Corel draw will be going ...this is an insult ....I was so glad that I could buy quality products from a Canadian company (we don't have many up here). I just can't believe it. Platform preferences aside it can't take that much more cash to develop both. I completely agree with the aformentioned markerting problems ..while Corel was well known to me with offices literally blocks away, I learned of the software originally by fluke! sorry for the rant but this just blows!

scotttucker3d ( ) posted Fri, 30 May 2003 at 10:30 PM

It is probably a moot point since they seem to be killing Bryce anyway - but it is an insult - I agree. Bryce was founded on the Mac and Mac artists made it into the app that Windows artists were pining for. Corel doesn't understand Markets - big duh - all the Mac users have already bought it many times and they are waiting for a friggin' update that will never come of COURSE sales are down for Mac users because they already bought it! Do you understand what market saturation is Corel? Again - like I said a moot point. I doubt anyone is getting an update to Bryce - ever. Thanks to Corel's brilliant marketing. Scott

Meshbox ( ) posted Fri, 30 May 2003 at 10:50 PM

Ieee! They made a big drop in price after I paid full price, now they dump Bryce for Mac. Now I am really glad I have Vue 4. Bryce 5 was my first experience with Bryce and I do like it. But maybe its going to be my last experience with Bryce. I read Corel is in bad shape anyway and nobody works on Bryce now. chikako

I just can't believe they made this announcement. What purpose did it serve? -Mo

Luke9 ( ) posted Sat, 31 May 2003 at 9:08 AM

they probably got tired of my weekly e-mails asking when the hell they were gonna release an OSX version ....;o)

brycetech ( ) posted Sat, 31 May 2003 at 9:29 AM

bryce is fubar (unless the good dr acquires it) btw, guy/gals..there's no need to send me emails about this...I just opened my email box and had over 60 mails about this..there's nothing I can do about it :( BT

PAGZone ( ) posted Sat, 31 May 2003 at 9:38 AM

As everyone else is, I am dissapointed by this as well. However this is no big surprise, and the windows version will likley go down too soon. I wish Corel never bought this software, I said it then and I'll say it again, Corel = death of Bryce! I hope Corel sells it's products to some Mac savvy company and goes belly up! -Paul

scotttucker3d ( ) posted Sat, 31 May 2003 at 11:47 AM

I agree Mo - what were they bragging about how they pay attention to market trends? Idiots! Like I said they don't understand simple market saturation. I bet a bigger percentage of the Mac base owns Bryce than the percentage of the windows user base. Mac users are only about 5 percent of the market total. And as we know they don't even have records on how many people own Bryce so how could they possibly glean these market figures in the first place??? Bloody idiots! Scott

tjohn ( ) posted Sat, 31 May 2003 at 11:56 AM

Mo and Scott: This press release (and the attention to market trends remark in particular) is an attempt to soothe the fears of their investors (and potential investors). This type of release is not meant to be encouraging to users of their products. Many companies and corporations are releasing statements about cutbacks, layoffs and other attempts to save money and thereby strengthen the company's worth (so goes the theory) at this time, because of the state of the world economy (not that great, you probably noticed). It's just business, it doesn't need to make sense. :^)

I still find it odd ... More than likely they (Corel), has a Bryce 6 for Mac in one form or another, why not make B6 the last release? Why not recoup some of the cost of development, then look too outsource the the next mac version to a smaller company and then have Corel just skim some off the top of those sales? Subcontracting is probably economical feasible at this time, there must be some hungry companies, or individuals that could form a company for this endevor? I mailed this article awhile ago to some others, I do not know if ya'll have seen it, but check the url out. Also, it is a 'rumor', but an interesting one indeed. I bought my first Mac as a second render machine and for post work, just for Bryce, so I guess B5 is the last upgrade for me period : Got MJW tho, so the Mac is happy ;]

PAGZone ( ) posted Sat, 31 May 2003 at 1:07 PM

MJW is cool, but it doesn't run fast enough on any mac slower then a Dual 1Ghz. I have a dual 450-G4 and it runs like molasses compared to my PC. Perhaps the next version of MJW will be dual processor savy... -Paul

Quoll ( ) posted Sat, 31 May 2003 at 1:11 PM

I think the real issue here is that we have a 4 year old or so product with nothing new. Bryce 5 wasn't really that much of an upgrade from Bryce 4, and everyone who wants this software probably already has it (for the most part). So how Corel expected to generate new sales off of an old product is beyond me. Not that I am personally interested in a Bryce 6, but Corel should have released a significantly new product a long time ago if they really wanted that product to remain viable. Now there are simply too many other competitors in or near the price range. Notice how all the products that came from Metacreations have either gone stagnant or simply dissapeared? I wonder if the code was so bad/old on all of those products that a "new version" of them would actually mean a complete re-write of all the code from the ground up? That would certainly be more expensive than an upgrade and would dictate the death of many of these products. And that crappy interface doesn't help sale any either! LOL

daRAT ( ) posted Sat, 31 May 2003 at 1:15 PM

Crappy interface? man u gotta stop smokin' that stuff ....

Bryce 6 WAS in development (some time ago), I'm not sure how far it got past the first round of beta-testing. I talked to one beta-tester who would attest to the Bryce 6 beta exsisting, Other than that all I could get out of him is the obligitory "It's great!". NDA gag rule ya know... Yeah, this announcement from Corel is a bit of a slap in the face to all Brycers, Mac owners in particular. One day, Bryce will have better, more loving parents... AgentSmith

now that is all I ask ...now that the damage is done. I object in principle to buying a title and basically sitting on it only to dump it later. It shows no respect for the software, it's creators or users. But ....onward and upgrade ooops upward :o)

AgentSmith ( ) posted Mon, 02 June 2003 at 5:34 PM

I (and every one else in the free world), would be shocked if Corel ever released a Bryce 6, even for Windows. Nah, I'ts turmoil right now, then one day, Corel will sell Bryce, or sell out their whole company...then another company will pick up Bryce, and confidence will be restored. The chants of "Bryce Is Dead" will have died out and...suprise...I will have been using Bryce the whole time. As I scurry back into my hole AS
