Subject: Stupid Question About Victoria 3

DoomsdayRenderer ( ) posted Mon, 02 June 2003 at 3:30 AM · edited Wed, 15 January 2025 at 11:43 PM

Hi all, I've used Poser 4 and Victoria 2 quite some time, but now your great renders in galleries make me think about upgrade to Victoria 3. Is there any sense to upgrade to V3, my system (now) being Athlon 600 MHz and 256 MB memory? Or is V3 too heavy for my system? What are the essential morphs etc. ? I've heard that not everything is "must haves". What you think are most important extras to Base V3? DoomsdayRenderer

I would get Roxanne(a huge morph pack for V2 in the rosity mp ) instead.. Depends maybe what you're after though.. If you want the extra polys and the better joints I guess v3 would do the trick.. If you want versatility I would recomend Roxanne.. I might also add that I'm not one of V3's biggest fans.. so you might want to ask some other ppl too for more "neutral" answers

I'm using V3 on a PII 450MHz with 312M of RAM. Definitly usable if you don't try to run loads of other applications at the same time. The High res map set for V3 can cause it to struggle with renders but it will get there eventually. Cheers Mark

i bought V3 some weekes ago + head + body morph package. - most of the V3 characters need these two additional packages to work. i intend to buy the male morphpack - so i can use many of the male characters too. i think V3 looks very smart, bends very well. but she needs huge amount of RAM/ressources. plus: a 4000x4000 pixels texture for the body only consumes approx. 48 Megs of RAM alone - plus a head texture of 2000x2000 pixels needs 12 Megabyte - now add the bumpmaps (if desired) and a transmap. and - of course - you will need clothings for her... i have a P4 1.6 GHz + 512 Megs RAM - and sometimes poser freezes - esp. when working with hires-textures. but that is perhaps of my old win98 ...

I have V3 but I don't like her at all because I don't have the head+body morphs. The hi-res texture maps for V2 don't work on V3 (although there is some shareware software which converts textures), neither clothes do... Well, that's the same stuff I said time ago, when I used posette and the millenium characters appeared ;-)

I don't know. Everyone keeps saying you need tons of system resource to use her, but I have never had any trouble, and I can use her on a 128 Athalon. Of course, I have my vm jacked up, which I keep high because then I NEVER get Poser crashes on missing bums or texture files. (Win2K) I can use 3 V3's with morphs inj (Of course, if I am injecting all for some reason, I only use one, and then save an inj file), DAZ's hi-res textures, and other scenery, and still render fine. Of course, maybe I am not one to ask. I am not sure why everyone thinks she is much more of a memory hog, but I guess it is just me. :D But I still say, at least in Win2k, if you set your paging much higher than amyone recommends, you will have next to no problems. (Of course, I am extreme, mine is set to half a gig. :D But like I said, I no longer have any troubles with Poser crashing.)

www.crucial.com RAM's the best Poser upgrade available! (Not trying to sell for Crucial, there are others out there, just had good luck with them in the past and their prices and service are good.)

IMO, v3 is the best, most advanced Poser character there is to date. If used properly she can take much less resources than v2. But I agree with jchimim, I'd get more RAM if I were you.

sabretalon ( ) posted Mon, 02 June 2003 at 9:52 AM

I would get more RAM as well, think of it as an upgrade for other products as well as poser.

Darkginger ( ) posted Mon, 02 June 2003 at 11:53 AM

Since I've had V3, I've had far fewer problems with Poser (4) locking up on me - but then, I rarely load all the morphs, just the ones I plan to use - and I've more or less given up on clothing objects - I draw my own in post (ditto hair)! It was a case of having to, to begin with, but now the postwork is my favourite part of making pictures! V3 with the basic head and body morphs works really well for me - haven't touched V2 or 1 since I got her. This puter is three years old in August - it's a 733 Packard Bell with (I think, it varies according to what the hubbie's put in it or taken out of it) 512 meg of RAM. I also use a nifty little piece of free software called Rambooster (easily found using Google). It's telling me I currently have 133104 Kb of RAM free - which I find is more than enough to render V3 with several morphs. V3 is just so versatile - look in my gallery if you want to see some of the things you can do with her and nothing else - most of my pics consist of a single V3 and postwork. (Although I usually use an invisible ball for pointing her eyes at!). To tell you the truth, I am so addicted to V3 that I can't understand why anybody would want to be without her! I can see she'd be a pain if you're into multi-figure renders, but she works great for what I want!

greenbd ( ) posted Mon, 02 June 2003 at 1:33 PM

Another thing to remember about V3 is that she comes with a morphless version that will result in .pz3 file sizes of less than 1MB if it's just her in the scene. Makes it very fast to work with and pose her, and then you can just swap in the version that includes the morph channels, inject and dial up the morphs you want (especially easy if you get DAZ's Injection Pose Builder), and render. That base version is great for animating body movements before you add facial expressions.

Thanks for all the info. You're the best Poser resource, all of you! Real artists and power users. Whew. Now I wish I'd have enough money to fulfill this (admittedly wisely optimized) shopping list... More RAM / V3 / morphs... Even that Roxette was interesting looking. Now, my Visa card tries to crawl away, it's looking worried... Hm...

jchimim ( ) posted Mon, 02 June 2003 at 2:38 PM

"Now, my Visa card tries to crawl away" I keep mine in line by sitting on it several hours a day. It's happy to get out. :)

melanie ( ) posted Mon, 02 June 2003 at 7:39 PM

I have a Pentium III and only 128 RAM, but I've never had any problems rendering V3, even with Michael 2 in the picture with her (both fully dressed and with hair, and a background, or the Cyclorama). Melanie
