Subject: A little help with this explosion please.

I'm having trouble creating a nice smokey explosion (like in the truck-crash in The Matrix Reloaded). I get these artefacts from intersecting volumetrics. Does anyone know how to get rid of them?

And the wireframe in case anyone's interested.

that same thing has happened to me when i rendered alot of volumetric spheres next to each other--it maybe u could turn the fuzzy factor up or something? i dunno---good luck with this, cuz that explosion looks awesome!

Try this thread, maybe it will help.

I had the same problem with volumeric textures on spheres when making this months challenge entry, where the spheres intersected the textures would vanish. Catlin

Thanx a lot for that link Ringbearer. I never even heard or thought of that trick. I'll check it out immediately. Someone says it also works on glass. This could be the best new trick I've learned in months!

That is a great tip, thanks for the link.

Great tip. Does work with some things, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to work with these specific volumetrics. Maybe it doesn't work with true-volumes, but only with the old textures?

I've got an idea to use a depth-render and a specially-made mask scene and fix it in PSP, but I don't know if it'll work. And I'll maybe need a render for every single particle.

I've been known to use Symettrical (sp?) lattices, and texture them with volumes. Try Menno's Fire, it's a good flame mat, and standard Clouds mats for the smoke. I'd think you'd get a mixture of the 2 in a real explosion. Maybe playing with the transparency of the smoke will help. This question has come up before, and an explosion is a dynamic event; you can choose how far along the destruction sequence you want to go..
