Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Dec 23 7:38 pm)
Yup. P3DO just does batch renames. :D And something that helped keep me sane awhile back...you can rename the extension of your MAT files from .pz2 to .cm2 and move them to your camera libraries. I do this since I have significantly less cameras than poses. They work just the same there (or in the face and/or hand directories too) You can do that by hand, or P3DO has a plugin that renames extensions as well.
You can rename just about anything in the Libraries tree using Windows Explorer, including the subdirectories. Just don't rename or move anything in the Textures or Geometries trees. And if you rename something in the Libraries, make sure you rename the corresponding RSR (if there is one) to the same name. Take care; Chas
Ouch, forget about making pose files into camera files. That's way too much work when PBooost is there to help instead. I used banks for things like "Vicky's MATs," "Vicky's Poses," etc. Then I could put all the MATs in one bank, and take the word MAT right out of the name. If it's in the MAT bank, it's a MAT! Oh, I won't rename any of the Vicky 3 stuff. But Vicky 3 has 3 banks for herself alone!
I renamed all of my MAT poses so that the word MAT is in front of the name. Regular poses have a P in front of their names. Works fine (I'm on a Mac, if that makes a difference). Thing is, I'm running out of space and now need to consolidate somehow and I'm not sure how to go about it....? I'm considering moving stuff into the face or camera libraries, but I'm dragging my heels on actually renaming everything...I know exactly how frustrating file management can seem! But I'm not getting Poser5, so I guess I'd better just buckle down and do it :P
Patricia I did the same thing, but Chas said "if you rename something in the Libraries, make sure you rename the corresponding RSR (if there is one) to the same name." That really confused me. Now I'm not quite sure what I should do. I've consolidated some poses by combining pose files like standing, sitting, jumping, flying, etc., into one folder. weapons poses (swords, daggers, spears, axes, etc), into another folder.
I don't believe that Macs use rsr's.... I do know that none of mine were renamed, yet everything works just fine. I can't recall whether you have a Mac or a PC, but if it is a Mac, just add the new prefix and give it a try--it'll work! Consolidating is something I haven't done in quite a while...things are getting pretty messy in there, too :P
Philywebrider must be on Windows if he's using P3DO. For, say, "Vicky Beach Tan MAT.pz2" there should be a file called "Vicky Beach Tan MAT.RSR" or one called "Vicky Beach Tan MAT.PNG". When you rename the PZ2 to "MAT Vicky Beach Tan.PZ2" you also need to rename the RSR/PNG the same way. That's the advantage of using P3DO - it does both files together.
To start with, you should have had an RSR (or PNG, but I'm not going to keep repeating that - it'll send us all to sleep!) with exactly the same name, before the dot, as each PZ2 file. You need to end up with an RSR with exactly the same name as the PZ2 now has (urk, grammar), or you will have a mass of shrugging guys and have to identify your poses by name. So, if you can see which RSR goes with which PZ2 by the name just click on PZ2, press F2, highlight the name (up to the dot), ctrl-c, click on RSR, highlight the name (up to the dot), ctrl-v, done. Once that's done you may have some orphans that will take a bit of matching up - if you're using ProPack (or have both PNG and RSR thumbnails from the installation) the Windows preview will let you see the thumbnail, which may help to work out where it belongs, or you can use P3DO to view the folder and see the RSR thumbnails that way. At the worts you may have to open Poser, apply preview-less Poses and follow any of the standard methods for generating a new RSR. When trying to identify PZ2s that lack RSRs in a folder the XP Tiles view can be useful, with sort by name, since it pairs things off neatly.

OK philly. Here's the scoop from soup to nuts. You can rename the FOLDERS within a library category to anything you want. When Poser opens, it will automatically read your new names. So, Library = Pose / Folder = My MATs, can be changed to Folder = Anything I Damn Well Please. Second point for folders. You can name them numerically or alphabetically. Numbers will always appear before letters in poser, and capital letters appear before normale letters. So folder '01 - My MATs' will come before folder 'My MATs'. And folder 'My MATs' will come before folder 'my mats'. Like this.... 01 - My MATs My MATs my mats Inside the folders (where the Pose and MAT files are stored), if you rename a file, like My MAT.pz2, you have to also rename the corresponding file My MAT.rsr, which is the thumbnail for that pose/MAT file. Camera and Face libraries - Any pose or MAT file can be stored in these other two libraries by changing the extension from '.pz2' to '.cm2' for Cameras or '.fc2' for Faces. The corresponding .rsr file doesn't need to be changed since it works in all poser libraries. To make this really easy, get Renamer (at the link above). It renames single files, file extensions, entire folders and sub-folders. It even has a preview so you can see what will be renamed. Totally safe and easy. macPS One of the advantages of using the Camera library is that it's easy to make a thumbnail of your own. Say you don't like the thumbnail for a MAT of vicki's eyes and want a new one. Using a square document window, zoom in with the face camera and frame vicki's eyes, then open the camera library where the MAT file is stored. If the MAT is called 'MAT-for-vicki's-eyes', click on 'add to library, and save the scene as 'ZMAT-for-vicki's-eyes'. (Just put a 'Z' or '1' in front of the name). Go to explorer and find the new file, delete the .cm2 from the NEW file and the .rsr from the OLD file, then rename the NEW .rsr by deleting the 'Z' at the beginning. You now have a new thumbnail. You can do this with poser open by exiting the camera library and opening any other one. When you re-open the camera library, poser will update it. mac PS It's faster and easier to do this than it is to read it.
Thank you, maclean :) That will help when I tackle my Pose Library again. Do you know whether I can add another 'layer' so to speak in that library? Instead of Library>Pose>So n'So's Vicki Sits Poses>(poses) with a seperate entry for each pose package can I do it this way Library>Pose>All Vicki Sitting Poses>So n'So's Vicki Sits Poses plus DecoChair Sitting Poses plus others What I'm trying to do is to avoid all of one type of poses (multiple seperate packages) mixing together in a single file (too hard to figure out who to credit if I use one) without going through and typing a specific character before each pose name to make them appear together in a 'lump.'
Thanks, maclean, for stating it more clearly. Philywebrider: Don't worry too much -- if you don't have a corresponding RSR properly named in the folder, your characters / props / poses will still work, you just won't be able to see the thumbnail. If you aren't able to remember how you renamed the RSR but want a thumbnail for something, you can always load the character / prop / pose in Poser and then save it to the Library again within Poser with a slightly modified name (it will create a new RSR), and then delete the old thumbnail-less file (also within Poser). Patricia: "Instead of Library>Pose>So n'So's Vicki Sits Poses>(poses) with a seperate entry for each pose package can I do it this way Library>Pose>All Vicki Sitting Poses>So n'So's Vicki Sits Poses plus DecoChair Sitting Poses plus others" Unfortunately, no, because Poser doesn't know how to navigate up and down the directory structure. But while you can't put: Library>Pose>Vicki Sits>So n'So's, Library>Pose>Vicki Sits>DecoChair, you can put: Library>Pose>VSit So n'So's Library>Pose>VSit DecoChair so that your sitting poses are still reasonably together (alphabetically) but in seperate folders. Keep in mind, the more categories you create, the longer your Poses library will be and the longer it will take to scroll to those at the very bottom of the list (so only do this for the largest groupings you need to sort). Also, keep those folder names short, because you can only see the first 12 to 16 characters (or so) of the folder name, at least in P4. "VSit SoNSo" will be easier to figure out than "Victoria Sitting S..."
Patricia, Chas is right. Poser 4 can't access folders within folders, unfortunately. What I do to over come this problem is use numerical folders. So, 01 - 09 are MATs for clothes : 10 -19 are MATs for hair, etc. You can name the folders '01 - vicki pants', '02 - vicki dresses', and so on. Basically you have from 001 - 256 to use, so you can invent your own system. Or use group names, like chas suggests, if that's easier. I tend to use numbers because the numbers more or less correspond in each library. So, in the faces library you can also have 01 - 09 for vicki expressions, or whatever figure you use most. One thing you can do, no matter what system you use is, when you're working on a new project or scene, you can rename the folders you'll be using to always have them at the top. My current project folders are always called '00 something'. That way, I don't have to hunt for them. 'I'm really dreading the 'housekeeping' I know how you feel. Believe me, the only way to beat it is to find a good system.... and alwaysw keep it updated. mac

Thanks to the help from the "Poser Professors" (many thanks again) I'm starting to get my Pose library reduced, (I had 215 files). I'm consoladating the pose files, and changing the file names to list them in a more logical listing. My question now is about the "MAT" files. Can I rename the "MAT" files in the library? I'd like to to put the word "MAT" as the first word of the MAT file. Example: Vicky Beach Tan MAT MAT Vicky Beach Tan or Example: Bertha MAT Bertha Can I make these changes without harming any thing. Do I need to use any additional programs? I have CorrectReference, and P3Do 1.6(just downloaded them), but I don't know how to use them. PBooost 1.4 is suppose to be out soon, and I intend to get it when it does.
