Subject: Another "crash" lesson for P5

richardson ( ) posted Sat, 14 June 2003 at 1:02 PM ยท edited Tue, 01 October 2024 at 5:12 PM

Just lost another 20 hours of work by accidently hitting the "save" button instead of "save as". If your new to this, it would be safer to save your work to a new name using the "save as" option. Ex: MyScene would be saved as MyScene1, or MyScene1d as you progressed along. If your lights were messed up you could revert back to previous "save as".
My system tends to crash during saves, and if you only are saving to one PZ3 you can lose all of it in a blackout crash. Hope this made sense. Signed, Prozac

Your system tends to crash during saves? Why does it do that?

This is a new one for me. I've worked around most of the crash causes. Never render before I save. But I got overconfident by saving to 1 PZ3. Why does it crash during saves? I would blame my PC since I built it. Too soon to tell. I assumed it was common.

Never had P5 crash while saving. When my P5 freezes, it is usually when adding something from the libraries. So I usually save to different files at different stages in my work anyway...

Hmmm... Could your os be trying to save backup files at the same time or some kind of configuration files? What os are you running? Also, are you using really old drives? It could be your host (whichever one poser is on and saving to) drive is getting tipsy. Try a surface scan and see if anything comes up then defrag. But things work okay when you save as though? Its when you save 'over' an existing file that... what happens?

Mine usually locks up during hair or cloth calculations. You'd think I'd have learned by now to always save before calculating dynamics. sigh

It's Win2k with a new WD-120GB (8mb cache). The crashes are random, though. I can only duplicate them 50% of the time. Will defrag, though. Wonder if some brain out there is developing the "Render PC" with linux and 40gigs of dimm. I'm there.

My poser ( all versions 1-5) has always had a higher crash probability during rendering and saves. AND an nasty habit of trashing the file when it crashes. My main reason for dubbing Poser on the "User Hostile" programs :) Almost as nasty as CorelDraw 3 :P
