Hi all and happy Father's day.....I am not getting this depth of field thing....trying to get the background more blury, did the blur thing with the camera but I want the girl to be the most seen and she gets blured out too....some assistance is needed......Thank you...Sharen

Once you add a percentage of blur you get two lines in front of your camera. What appears between these two lines is in focus. Things at the back of this area and past the second line appear out of focus. Careful, things in front of the first line are also out of focus. You need to adjust your 'focus' amount within the camera settings. This will move those two lines foward and backward. WARNING. Lesser amounts < 100 will shorten your feild of focus.

PS. Fantastic and Powerful Image you are creating here.

Sharen, this is truly a beautiful picture, even without dof.

I think one of the critical things with dof is the scale of the scene. You may have to adjust the scene's scale to fit the focal point into the camera's focal range.

hmmm, Okay, I will try this, so I put the girl in front of the 2 lines and then adjust the focus, and then adjust the scale of the scene. Still a little confused but I will go try this. Thank you for your help. Sharen

Sharen,

This link is to another thread covering depth of field with pictures by Guitta:

Oh thank you, I am also wondering, the object that you want in focus, will it stay in focus if it is within the 2 lines, I am trying it, but it looks as if it is also effected. Sharen

Nevermind, that thread explained it....thank you for the thread. Sharen

Talk about timely. I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure DOF in Vue and was coming here to post a question. The manual doesn't go into enough detail and it is so easy to do in Bryce. Thanks. Trouble

I'm also struggling with DOF in Vue, and regret that I probably can't help with the intended topic, but wanted to say that I found this image to be very disturbing, even more so because posted on Father's Day. I appreciate strong and meaningful images, so my reaction is a compliment to the thought, feeling, and work that's going into the image. It came as quite a surprise, though, and I don't consider myself to be oversensitive about imagery at all. Not trying to be righteous or make an issue of this, but maybe use of the "violence" tag would have lessened the shock of coming across this image. Again, not wagging any fingers, just a thought. Good luck with the work in progress, Sharen, you're certainly on to something powerful, here. To my eye the image already looks completed.

Shame on me, I never even thought about it being father's day. I am sorry and of course you are right regarding this as being violent, maybe Guitta can flag this for me, I am not sure how to do that now that it has been posted. Again I do appologize for being insensitive. Sharen

BillyGoat ( ) posted Mon, 16 June 2003 at 3:11 PM

Really moving image Sharen... I don't see the violence in it - I see the aftermath of it. It only reinforces that we all are supposed to protect the weak and defenseless. This image is a good reminder of that.

About DOF, you had better use 50-80(or more) camera focal length. Hatsumi

BillyGoat, I agree with all you said, and don't want to argue my original point because I'm afraid of turning a small thing into too big of a deal. Sharen has nothing to apologize for, and did nothing wrong. My strong reaction came as a real surprise to me, which is why I was compelled to say what I did. I fully support and appreciate the use of art to say things that need to be said, and regret that I may not have expressed myself very well. I've sent an explanation and my own apology to Sharen in IM. Sharen, I don't think you were insensitive at all. I think it was me being uncharacteristically sensitive. :-)

Not to worry, no appologies necessary, let us all move on. H-kana, I think you might be right, I am going to try all of this good advice. Thank you again for your assistance. Sharen
