Subject: Moving Poser 5 from HD to HD

LonCray ( ) posted Thu, 19 June 2003 at 10:32 AM · edited Mon, 02 December 2024 at 12:43 AM

I'm using Poser 5 (and not having any real problems) on Windows XP. Recently I got a new 80Gb secondary HD, and my primary (only 20Gb) is getting full. I'm interested in moving Poser to the new drive and have read that it's possible to just pick it up and move it - is this true? Are there any issues with Windows XP Registry from doing this? I'd really prefer not reinstalling Poser if I can get away with it. Thanks in advance!

I did it with p4 several times without any problems by copying. Didnt try with p5 , but i think it should work

I've done it too :o) Works just fine. I did it so that I INSTALLED Poser on the new location and THEN copied the Runtime folder to it afterwards.

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA

yup- me too- cut and paste Poser dose NOt write any thing to the registry, so you can move it straight up. But you will have to make a new shortcut to it :)

I don't know if this applies (probably doesn't) but I had a file transfer of both Poser 4 and Poser 5 done from one hard drive to another and, much to my surprise) they worked without any problems. I have Windows XP too (now).

I've not had any probs moving any of Posers 4, 5, to external HD's -- did have major probs with PBoost which does write to the registry. Emily

Normally I'd strongly advise against any such movement of applications without a reinstall. I personally would reinstall to the new location, and then delete the lot of the folders and replace them with my old ones. Having said that... I've just had a (very quick) look at what Poser does in fact add to the registry, and I must agree that it's minimal. However, you will encounter problems should you wish to uninstall, and also Poser includes keys such as: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTpz3fileshellopencommand which tells windows where the executable for opening of Poser files is located.

Safest is probably reinstall main program-- move Runtime. I've never had any probs from moving Runtimes. And that is the big monster in a reinstall. Other than all the patches of course. Emily

I ghosted a new drive in with the same drive letters. Didn't have to do a thing. P5 and P5 came up and ran just like normal.

Thank you all for the replies - I think I'll go with the reinstall/repatch, then move my ever-increasing Runtime.

LonCray, Poser5 supports to have multiple Runtime directories, so moving Poser software is not really necessary to use your new drive. Create a directory structure (without files) on your new drive (I suppose it is D:) that looks like Poser-DRuntime and underneath dirs Characters, Pose, Textures etc. Finally from within Poser, "Add library" --> Choose D:Poser-D.
