Subject: Question on Lighting: Poser 5 vs. 3DS Max import from BodyStudio 2.0

Not sure if I should post this one here or in the 3DS Max forum. But since I am looking for input from other Poser users with this plugin, I'll try here. This is just a question for the sake of curiosity. The attached pick shows a side by side comparison of the same scene rendered inside Poser 5 and then rendered inside 3DS Max 5 using the new BodyStudio plugin from Reiss Studio. Both use the same SciTech light set from Daz's Complex global lighting 2 pack, with the lighting imported automatically by BodyStudio into Max 5. Ignoring the overall quality improvement of the render in Max for a moment (yay), I wasn't expecting such a drastic difference in the overall light intensity in 3DS Max. In the end, I like the Max lighting much better but I was expecting a darker render in Max based on the Poser results. So I guess my question is this: Has anyone else using this plugin noticed the light intensity being brighter in Max? The doc indicates that the positions and colors are imported, but doesn't say anything about the intensity... is it expected behavior that the lighting intensity will need to be adjusted manually once in Max?

I don't have this plugin, and unfortunally my budget won't allow me to buy it, ..... However what came to my mind reading your post was: 1)there's probably a way withing max to change this particular light setting. 2)Can't the lighting be done in max? I mean with max lights? would that be better than importing lights that one can not control? I hope that helps.... vince

Hi Toolstech! Great catch. We definitely want to hear about stuff like this. Do me a favor, when you find an issue like this, also send an e-mail to tech support at support@reiss-studio.com. We are not always on the forums here, but I think you will be surprised at how quickly we respond to issues like this when we hear from our users. For example, in this case we can probably just modify the plugin so it will set these settings more acurrately. Can you send an e-mail to support@reiss-studio.com? If we can get some examples, we'll look into this. (oh, and we also don't mind putting out intermediate builds). cheers! -Josh

Do a render using the firefly renderer as well- I'm betting there's some settings that 3dsMax does support (such as flesh nodes, etc) which aren't supported by the P4 renderer (but are supported by Firefly. And sorry, this is just for personal curiosity, as I don't have the plug-in myself. (Though I might look into getting the Maya plug-in once I learn that program better.)

Thanks Josh, I'll send an email to support this evening. EsnRedshirt, the Firefly renderer comes out about the same as the P4 renderer in overall light intensity. graphicnovel, yes I can adjust and or create the lighting within 3DS Max, but unfortunately light setup is one item (of several) which I just have never got the hang of. If I can import a good existing light set from Poser, that makes things a lot easier.

BTW, I just found what caused the lighting difference. When I imported the scene into Max, I chose the keyboard entry option with point of origin at 0 0 0 and Scene Scaling (under Keyboard Entry) set to Real Life. But under the Scene Options I had Scene Scaling set to manual at 0'0.0" (which appears to come up as the default for me). That is what caused the brightness. When I changed the Scene Scaling under Scene Options to Real Life to match the setting under Keyboard Entry, the lighting matched that from Poser. So this probably falls under the category of user error.

sigh, I seem to reply to my own threads a lot :( Anyway, now I can not get the lighting intensity to match that in poser anymore (just that one time - and I'm beginning to wonder if I accidentally didn't import the lights that one time - the default Max lighting is very similar in level to that from the SciTech set in Poser, it seems). Now matching the scene scaling between the two areas has no impact, and the lights are bright again. Report sent to support. Thanks.

Doesn't the "Light lister" in Max have a single control that will change the level of ALL the lights in the scene, at the same time? (global control?)
