Well, I'm bummed that more people didn't give this a try, because it is a great exercise in self-editing. It is a close call for me, but I choose jstro as #1 because I know from experience how difficult it is to write at length and resist the call of the adverb....and I enjoyed the story in its own right too. This makes, for me, ecoarena's tightly written yet very effective poem a second not far behind. I'd be happy if both could win. :) Good job to both of you. Thank you for setting a high standard for, respectively, prose and poetry in the same challenge.
I was afraid it might be difficult, but I was hoping people would give it a try because it was meant as an exercise in editing and forcing you do use stronger verbs and adjectives instead of relying on adverbs to help carry the message across.
I do have some IMed votes as well, so we'll see if jstro gets the Double Whammy - Poet and Writer of the Month.
I think I've decided on the next challenge, and I believe it will draw more people in.
Well I'm bummed too, that more people did not take part. Must admit, it was hard, and if English is not your first language the whole concept of adverbs may just be too much. But I thought it was an excellent idea for a Challenge and enjoyed it. I know it was an eye opener for me. Here are some ideas for Challenges I've been mulling over: 1.Write a scene twice from the view point of two different characters. 2.Write a scene twice, one in first person, one in third person narration. 3.Write a scene from a non-human point of view. Be a fish, bird, dog, or chair. 4.Write a creation mythos. 5.We could cycle through the various genera; sci-fi, romance, mystery, historical, fantasy, etc. One thing I would really love to see is an annual bad fiction contest. I really enjoyed doing the Max Mann story, and it would give me a good reason to carry on with it. How about making it an annual event? jon

Oh yeah, almost forgot... Provide the first sentence. Everyone else finish the story. I have one for you, I'll post it separately as a mini challenge. jon
