This is in response to your post under "Demo Reel Intro" But I thought I'd copy it here as well. I used Avid DV Express 3.5 to edit the images as well as the sound. It can do unlimited layers of sound but you will be able to only hear 8 of them at a time. You just do a mixdown. There were around 19 or 20 tracks of sound. I used Cool Edit to manipulate the sound effects. I would reccommend using Adobe Premiere or Vegas video to help you assemble the project They tend to be a little more user friendly. Avid can do alot but takes a bit of time to get the hang of.
I have Premiere for the advanced stuff, but I do much of my video editing with a simple freeware application called VirtualDub, and audio editing with the inexpensive Goldwave.
That name reminds me of Tito at CGTalk... Anyways. I use combustion and I find it very easy to use. I don't know how many layers you can use but the drawback is that you can only have one audio track... I've also used AfterFX a little bit but I don't have much experience on that subject...

Cool Edit Pro was just purchased by Adobe, and has been renamed Adobe Audition. They're charging more for it than syntrillium was (270 Pounds??? Nah man, that's almost 400$), and at the moment, Cool edit Pro 2 can be downloaded from this page http://www.syntrillium.com/shop/ for 249$US. Adobe will be charging 299$ when Audition is released, and "upgrading" from Cool Edit Pro 2 to Adobe Audition is free (I put quotations, because adobe is releasing this "update" only a few months after purchasing, and from what they say about the program, the only new features are likely to be an Audition splash screen, and minor task switching with Premiere), so if you want it, now is the time to buy. Once Audition is officially put on sale (something like a month or so), Cool Edit Pro, and Cool Edit 2000 will cease to be offered (Loopology.com is also gonna be shut down, with Adobe taking over the loop downloads and products). Point being, Cool Edit Pro is fantastic software. Aside from having no midi capabilities (other than small time playback), it's really kickass, with the ability to sync to SMPTE code for video etc. I've used it for almost 2 years, you can't go wrong with it for 250$, unless you have the 800$ needed for programs like Cubase and Logic.
