Get outside and sniff in some fresh air. Maybe some new O2 will unblock a blockage. See some sights, go people watching. I just go to my local B&N, buy a cup of coffee and browse thru their magazine rack.

I have quite a list of various things that help inspire me out of a 'block', some of these are a walk in a beautiful park full of nature, a long bath listening to my favorite music, paging through a fashion catalog or magazine, going for a cruise in my 69 camaro, playing a fantasy game, treat my self to something I wanted whether for poser or some other area, and last but not least maybe spend some time totally away from the computer with a friend or loved one go to a movie or dinner and just relax so I can see things fresh the next day, and if all else fails take on a new challenge or maybe a partnership. These are just some of the things that help me when I am uninspired for art.

Sometimes listening to music that I haven't listened to in a very long time. Going out and seeing the world :) Reading a book, watching a movie...pretty much just leaving it set until I get so ansy to get back to it that I can't help but do something. Most of all, don't worry about it, it happens to everyone at some point, yes easier said then done, but if you don't relax, take a deep breath and quit worrying about it, the muse will have a hard time finding your creative person when all he/she can find is something that resembles you all tied up in knots ;) They don't like that sort of thing you see, they are bascially lazy beings and untying all those knots just puts them in a bad mood :) It'll come back, truly it will!! Go for a walk, read a book, or maybe some poetry, listen to some music. Then just sit in the garden and daydream, and hope something appears in your daydreams.

I enjoy the blocks. Its good to take time off once in a while. But when I'm itching to fire up the apps and have no idea what to do, I just play. I try out a new tut, or work on some type of texture blending, or play with the modeler, whatever. In short, I build technique when I'm on a drought. That's a good use of time because the more technique one learns, the more one can express what's in the brain. And, hey, every once in a while some happy accident comes together and I get excited again.

Gini ( ) posted Sun, 13 July 2003 at 3:56 AM

First and hardest is I turn the computer off , then buy 2 or 3 new books to read and start at least 2 , do some gardening or just watch a spider spin a web while I hold a trowel, sit on the beach and cloud watch with my kids , go out with some friends.........basically I do anything other than TRY to think of a new image. An idea never seems to come when I look too hard- only when I'm doing other things.

Surf the Web. Millions of ideas there :) or Watch one of your fav movies. I personally like to watch LotR or Harry potter or Jurassic Park. Vast amounts of inspiration in all 3. And definately reading a book!

Try different things :) I've been suffering from an artist's block when it comes to Poser, so I decided to do photography and fractals for a while :)

**can't.... move.... can't.... find.... off... button... must..... sit........ here... ** LOL! I know the feeling... "But if I turn off the computer, I'll cease to exist!" :-P Seems like everyone's saying, "Go off and do something different for a while!" I think that's good advice. It's like when you're "too close" to an art piece and can't see the flaws. It helps to take a step back, do something else for a while, change your state of mind. When you come back, you'll have "fresh eyes" and possibly a new perspective on the matter. nukem ...and if that fails, there's always mind altering drugs. 8-o (kidding of course... ;-)

grand marnier and coffee or margaritas and a collection of short stories. Bad part is [with coffee drink]; I awaken around midnight with the bright idea of what to do and have to do it immediately before I forget...... Good luck!

I've been a creative, (newspaper photgrapher and now digital artist/illustrator), for over 25 years. Artists block is a very normal part of the creative process and something not to be afraid of. My take on it is that artists block is a way of your creative self telling you that it wants to grow, possibly in a different direction or style. I think artists block should be fed with different artistic mediums or styles than you normally deal with. Broaden your outlook. I've always found one of the greatest helps for artists block is to look at the creative efforts of others...such as on this and other digital web sites. When I look at some of the stuff being done here, and by that I mean all the sites not just Poser, I can't help but getting excited and inspired. Hang in there...this too shall pass. -jay

I'm there right now. Over 2 months now. Everything I touch turns to sh*t. What's worse, my early work looks terrific. I've taken to following tutorials to learn more, and have purchased a few high end products here. Hoping for a spark, ya know? I've even had requests filled by various artists here - things I was working on for contests. But nothing is working. Is this the Poser4Vue4 curse????

moochie ( ) posted Sun, 13 July 2003 at 3:11 PM

Ah, the secret is housekeeping. Start tidying up all those bloated folders, tweak a few textures you've downloaded and never used. Promise yourself to delete or put in storeage at least 10 characters or props you've never touched. Merge a few of the smaller pose folders. In no time at all you'll either have more efficient files for the next time the Muse nips at your ankles or, more probably, you'll have discovered something you'd forgotten you had and suddenly it's 3am.

Art can be percieved as non-verbal communication. You posted here so you obviously have something to say. Try a piece about your block and see where that goes.

DarkElegance ( ) posted Sun, 13 July 2003 at 3:41 PM

I Think my block/frustration is due to wanting to come up with something original something unique..I have been practicing cloth painting here on this puter but I cant seem to capture the feel of it as easily as oils. digital is not as easy as some would think. lol I have somethings running in my head but seem to be stuck in making them visual. GUH I think I am going to go do some beading and get some inspiration from the colors and light play....perhaps think of winter....tones of blue and violet shimmered with the soft golden peach of winter sun reflecting on icy colors......O.O

Block? What's that? I have the opposite problem, I can hardly ever finish any project because halfway through I get gripped by ideas for a new one. My suggestion would be to start with anything and brainstorm. Download whatever is the latest item in free stuff. Open it in Poser. Have a character interact with it. Start asking questions. What is happening here? How did the situation arise? What will happen next? It can trigger off all sorts of thoughts and ideas.

Music. Tons of it and loud, LOL! Opera helps me and a soft tenor like Bocelli. Niquil is great, too. ;-)

Cool hmatienzo :) I am just starting to learn to love opera. Got the Pavarotti bug hehe. As I get older my tastes are changing hehe.

DarkElegance ( ) posted Mon, 14 July 2003 at 1:30 AM

ok I have to admit I do love opera but unfortunatly due to bugs bunny when I hear it now I cant stop thinking of him laying on that huge white horse with tiny legs the fake blonde braids and metal cone bra on.

Oh I so know where you're coming from. I have trouble finishing one piece because I'm already thinking about the next. I have at least 5 unfinished pieces in my WiP folder.
