Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2026 Mar 07 3:03 pm)
Ok. I made a dress. I took the catsuit and just stuck the formal dress on top of it. Simple right? WRONG. The darned thing won't let me texture it!! I UVMapped it and made an awesome texture (Allie can vouch for that) for it. Only thing is, it won't except any textures I try to put on it. They all end up being weird. It's like, where the hip is on the texture ends up being near the chest or neck of the figure. It's driving me nutts. Any ideas?
I have not combined pieces exactly, but if you are UV mapping a 'new' map, don't you have to save a new object? I know when I remap an item (for instance when I morphed the Vicky dress to long and wanted a map just for the 'long' dress, I had to morph it, save it as .obj, then load the .obj into UV Mapper, save as new .obj with new name, save map). Don't know if this applies or not, but its a thought. BTW, if your map is inverted (which I did inadvertently several times in earlier version), then open it in your painting program and flip it vertically and resave it--OR get new version LOL. Diane
OMG. I could cry now. The fierceness of my scream has left me and now there's just a hopeless sob. All the things you guys are saying has me completely bewildered. I don't have the program you mentioned. All I have are Bryce, Poser, and Paintshop Pro. *Sigh. Allie, is there ANY way you could help me do this? Or anybody else for that matter?? CAN"T SOMEONE HELP ME????
Uthena, UV Mapper is available in FreeStuff under utilities-but I think you have that. You have basically what I have--except I have several utilities (and assorted odd graphics programs that make no difference to this). Oh, and if you have Poser 4 you should have Painter 3D--it came with Poser 4 on the extra CD. As to the editing the .cr2--Steve Shanks and some others helped me with that. It was quite easy with their step by step instructions. (I actually did forget to say you had to make a new .cr2--sorry). What Allie said is just about it, but maybe someone can say it a bit more basic. I was a little hesitant to mess with editing, but when I actually opened the cr2 and saw what they were talking about I understood immediately. Diane
I'm in the same boat with Uthena here....you folks are speaking a different language. I have a very basic I dea that a cr2 file has something to do with an object, and it has a companion rsr file....but as for what they actually are and what they are made of...what they do, etc....I'm clueless. Casey
Casey, you can open your library file (say the poser/library/character/female clothing) and you will see rsr's and cr2's. If you click on the icon for the cr2 it will open most likely in your notepad or Wordpad app from Windows accessories. I was told that there is a utility in Freestuff that is better but haven't used it and I use Wordpad to open mine. When you open it, you will see that it is just a text file. Since I don't have one open, I can't tell you exactly what lines say what but you will see right at the beginning that it 'points' to or references an object file--for instance bldress.obj. That means that the whole file uses that particular object file from your geometry folder. If you create a new model in UV Mapper then you must save it with a new name--say, for instance, longdress.obj--in your geometry file. Then you have to have a cr2 file in your library clothing file in order to 'see' it from within Poser. So--you take the original dress cr2 and you open it, you go to edit/search and when the search dialog box opens, you have it search for bldress.obj and replace it with longdress.obj. It will ask if you want to 'replace all' and you say yes. You save it as a cr2 for longdress. That way you now have a new model called longdress.obj from UVMapper and a cr2 for longdress and your original bldress.obj is still there too. I don't know if this makes any sense or not, but when Steve Shanks told me this it didn't to me either until I did all of these things. First, though, you have to save the .obj from within Poser with a name, open it in UV Mapper, create the map template as you want it, save both the new model (with the new name--don't replace your old model) and the texture template and then edit your cr2. Sound easy?? LOL--it really is. If you have questions as you try it, come back here and someone will walk you through it. Diane
Forgot to say that you must do this if you make a new texture template for a particular model also. Once you change your texture map you have to have a corresponding model for it to fit. For instance, with one of Poserworld's dresses, I found I liked it mapped cylindrically instead of planar--which is how it is now. You can tell this in UV Mapper when you 'load object' from the geometry file and it shows you the texture mapping. Then if you go to 'new texture' and try different ways of mapping, you will have to save a new model also. So--you go 'save model' and give it a new name--like for instance 'newdress.obj' and save it in the geometry file and then save the texture template with the same name wherever you save your templates and then create a new texture map for the dress with the new template and it will fit the new model---IF you edit your cr2 and create a new one with the new name. It DOES sound confusing, doesn't it G. Stormrage has a tutorial that explains what an object file, cr2 and rsr are, more or less, as I remember--and where they go. That might be a good place to start. I can't tell you the whys and wherefores--someone else can, but I do know how to edit the cr2 to point to a new model. (And--tell you a little secret--if I can do it, you can too--I felt completely stupid about these things last Fall. Once you try it, then it sort of falls into place). Diane
Casey--guess I was posting the second part when you were. When I saved my longdress.obj from the dress.obj all the morph targets were saved as I recall. Hopefully someone else will tell you this, but try it with something easy like a piece of clothing and you can delete your 'trial' if it doesn't work out. I wish I could remember. I have not done any of the 'people' models, only clothing.
Don't feel too dumb Uthena, we all have to start somewhere. I took Diana's responses and mailed them to myself so I can print them out and go through them step by step. That's the only way I'm going to be able to do this. It's kinda like learning a new recipe and you have to keep referring back to the cookbook to make sure you've got it right. It's overwhelming to me too, but I'm pretty sure I can do it...I'll just make sure I work from a copy and not thbe original file. I'm sure you can do it too. Just give yourself a chance.
Casey, to get a template for it, just go to UV Mapper and 'load object'. You will browse for the hair .obj from your geometry file and load it--the texture template you get there when it opens will not have to have a new model--it will be as the object is mapped by Jim. Just save that as your template and work with that. If you don't have a template for something, then just open the object in UVMapper and that's the right template 'as mapped'--that's it--just save the template-nothing else to do. Allie was more precise. A texture is just that--a graphics file. I learned more about them from just opening them in a graphics program and looking at them--and the template. Helped a lot. Texture mapping is 'how' the model is mapped for the texture. Uthena, if you can figure out how to put the two models together and do a great texture map, then you can do this too--its pretty easy but you may need someone to take you step by step. I'd say go to your library folder and look at a cr2 and then you would have more idea of what we are talking about. I was VERY dubious about trying it the first time--I had no idea what a cr2 was--or what it looked like when open. You have worked with UV Mapper some too. Casey--have you gotten Yamato's new hair?-it has bangs and is a terrific morphable hair. Diane
Are you kidding! I snapped that up the same day they updated It's gorgeous (as usual for them)! I've even colorized copies of the texture in pink, plum, red, green, and blue....It's not long enough for what I want the Fantasy3 hair for though. ( I'm creating characters for an online H-manga. Anyone interested in participating in a project like that? I'm starting with characters based on Sailor Moon, although with the new 9-lives morphs, I might try a hand at Tenchi Muyo ::Ryo-Oki {a living spaceship that looks like a cross between a rabbit and a cat} [sp?] is too cute not to try to make::)
Momcat: I was gonna get the costume shop cd, but it woulda still been over 25$ i think. I just can't afford to spend another dime. I only make 800 a month and have 6oo in bills and 150 for groceries. That leaves me 50 extra dollars a month and this month is My birthday, my cousins birthday, my brother's birthday, and my best friend's birthday. Sigh. After buying their presents, I couldn't even buy myself one.So with my 25 from Zygote, i got the tunics and their textures and templates. I've tried, but i still can't figure out the cr2 thingy.
Awww ::pat,pat,pat:: I'm sorry. This does seem to be event season though, so I know what you mean. We just had Fathers Day, my mom's birthday, my daughter's birthday is in a couple of weeks, my mother in law's birthday is today, two weddings, and our aniversary at the end of this month...plus next month I'm going to a convention. I just barely managed to squeeze in a Zygote purchase ( hubby gave me a $35 limit ::he pays the bills::) Now I can't decide whether I want the costume shop, or Victoria. When I get a chance to play with the cr2 editing (and after I finally get it right), I'll write out exactly what I did step by step from start to finish, and I'll use a stock female clothing item for it so you can follow along. It looks a lot like making or changing a link on an HTML document. Casey
Uthena, Your texture has great potential, and I remember you liked the dress I was working on to use it for. I've been out of town and having some snafus with it. But I also realized I may not be able to post it as it is constructed out of the formal dress and the sweater, and I believe I can't post that as an object. Note: Its not simply the sweater over the dress, but taken into RD5 and cut up, stretched, reattached and some new bits added. So it is a new piece, independent of the first two, but possibly not different enough for me to post it. I will post an image of the dress in the next day or two if I can get some bugs worked out of it and ask if it is a possible copywrite infringement. If it is, I won't be able to post it. However, I do plan to learn how to make clothing from scratch and have learned quite a bit lately. My interest is period, medieval, and fantasy style clothing. And I plan to post these in the Free Stuff section in gratitude for all the things I've downloaded from there. Please don't scream, we'll help you out. So after buying your cousin, brother and best friend their gifts, just slip a little hint what you would like for YOUR birthday! Wynter -->envisioning you with a Zygote Costume CD in your hands :)
Wynter I'm looking forward to all you post. It seems your taste and mine are the same when it comes to clothing. Since it's the sweater and dress, it should be okay to post them to download. Not sure, but just don't try to sell it. Actually, they all already got me my gifts and they never once asked me what I wanted. :( Oh well..maybe christmas
Have you made a new OBJ file for garment (based on Zygote's existing OBJ files), or can it be saved directly as a CR2 without you having saved an OBJ file? That is the important question. If you can save the garment as a CR2 straight away - without saving an OBJ file for it, you can safely distribute the CR2 with no restrictions. It won't work for anyone who doesn't have the Zygote OBJ files already in their Geometries folder. If the garment is just one Zygote OBJ file, you will have to use OBJaction Mover to create a PCF file. I'm not too sure what you can do if it's more than 1 Zygote mesh - Mover doesn't support multiple seed files at the moment. Hope this helps Paul
Here's the word on that dress (link below), I decided to post the question before working out bugs. Its too different to just post a cr2, and probably now too different for a seed file for mover. Got some great guidance, though. If the suggestions don't work, I'll start a new dress asap! http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?Form.ShowMessage=135428

Some of you guys may remember I posted a texture a while back for a dress I was trying to create. Allie managed to put it on the Zygote Costume Shop dress. Well, I don't have the money to buy that CD. So, I'm back to square one. Can anyone create a dress from the catsuit and formal dress and put my texture on it successfully? To see my texture, do a search for Uthena in the forum. I am dying to use this dress on a character I am attempting to make for my own personal collection. I really am going to scream if I can't get this to work. I've tried so many different ways to get the stupid thing to work. I'm like ~this~ close to throwing Poser out the window!! Someone please save my sanity. ~~Una
