Subject: Reflection Maps

opkay, I'm interested in using images as reflaction maps. BUT, what good are they, what can I do with them, what are they used for? I have a vague idea, but I'd like to know more

Not the best but they are basically a fake metalic in poser that does metal looking stuff without really making things metalic. Basically they are like illustrated chrome things. Never seen them actually used in bryce though ...Hope that helps a little

Well, I'm thinkin they gotta go beyond that. I've seen them used in other 3D programs to show reflections on the sides of cars and stuff. and Bryce does have them, so they've got to be useful forsomething. I just don't know what yet.

reflection maps are interesting features. for instance, if properly applied you can make objects appear as if they are reflected in a surface (even tho the object is nowhere in the actual scene file) or you can do some really kewl decorative effects like decorative mirrors...for instance a non -reflective decorative surface surrounded by a reflective mirror surface (many real world mirrors have this) not much info is available (that Ive seen) on the practical application of reflection maps (I may need to fix that ;)) good luck BT

If you have something that is reflective and you want to show it off without the expense in polygons, RAM, file size, then you use a reflection map to give the object something other than the sky to reflect. I usually end up creating projects with enough intresting stuff that I don't feel the need for reflection maps. Or I'll add the reflections in post production work in Photoshop.

well, The feature is there is Bryce, and once I understand it, I'll find some way to use it that wasn't intended, to do something interesting with it.

Try using reflection maps of bump fields. I got some tiny floating orbs off the surface of a texture, giving the appearance that the object was surrounded by millions of tiny planets that hovered.
